Set in the turbulent world of the late 1960's, this is the searing true story of a young woman (LITTLE WOMEN, DRACULA and REALITY BITES star WINONA RYDER in the most powerful performance of her career) who finds herself prescribed a "short rest" at a renowned mental institution. Rebelling against the head nurse (WHOOPI GOLDBERG) and chief psychiatrist (VANESSA REDGRAVE), Susanna Kaysen chooses instead to befriend the resident "loonies" - a group of troubled women that includes the seductively captivating Lisa (ANGELINA JOLIE - 1999 Oscar winner as BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS for this role). But after almost a year of both flirting and struggling with the thin line between normal and crazy, Susanna realises that to win her freedom she must face the one thing that terrifies her the most - herself.

Wonderfully cast, written and acted, a young rich woman is placed into a psychiatric hospital after attempting to harm herself. There she befriends a group of other disturbed young women, who she relates to One being the dominant force to her not wanting to make a recovery. After a year being admitted to this hospital, she escapes and goes into hiding with another psychiatric patient who had been discharged some weeks prior. She witnesses her suicide which disturbs her so much so that she returns to the psychiatric facility. Angelina Jolie is fantastic, so is Winona Ryder and Britney Murphy.

A memoir from someone who's been on the inside and as such is a good character study. Not very patronizing explores the frustrations of mental illness from both sides. The genius is following Kaysen's progress from day one through to the other side, making neither the institution or the patient the villian. Jolie is perfect as the bipolar destructive co-dependent friend and foil to Kaysen's recovery.

Great acting. Dialogue a little hard to pick up in places. Winona Ryder is a very under rated actress. Let's hope she gets her life back on the rails and gets the acting roles she deserves. One fault- her hair style was too neat and stylish throughout-took away from the realism. Jolie was amazing and Vanessa Redgrave, in her small role, shone (as always).

This is one of the most unusual films I've seen but it definitely makes you think about things, and it's not short on drama either.

Well worth watching, very good performances and memorable characters - Angelina Jolie is brilliant as Lisa - no wonder she won an academy award for her role.

Whilst I found this movie to be very confronting with regard to those who suffer from mental health problems I also found this movie helped my understanding and insight into a very much taboo subject. All actors played their parts with realism and empathy.
