Director: Vincente Minnelli
Actors: Eva Gabor, Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Jacques Bergerac, Maurice Chevalier, Hermione Gingold, Isabel Jeans

A home, a motorcar, servants, the latest fashions: the most eligible and most finicky bachelor (Louis Jourdan) in Paris offers them all to Gigi (Leslie Caron). But she, who's gone from girlish gawkishness to cultured glamour before our eyes, yearns for that wonderful something money can't buy. Producer Arthur Freed, director Vincente Minnelli and a cast rife with Gallic charm combine talents for this lavish winner of nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. Its Alan Jay Lerner/Frederick Loewe songs can sparkle like The Night They Invented Champagne or caress with title-tune tenderness. "I Remember It Well." man-about-town Maurice Chevalier sings to Hermione Gingold. Live love itself, Gigi is most memorable.

At first I thought this film was just typical MGM hammy lightness (and perhaps even a touch offensive) but I persevered to the end. If you don't enjoy the plot you will at least enjoy the spectacular visual feast which is so lavish and opulent. It was only later I after I had mulled it over in my mind that I realised what the film was really about, and that all the sweetness and light was just to make the grittier part of the story more palatable and suitable for the musical format. I watched it again with the commentary (by film historian Jeanine Basinger), which was a most useful analysis of the plot and insightful into how carefully crafted the film really is.

Haven't watched yet - just wanted to note that this was made in 1958 whilst My Fair Lady was made in 1964 so this movie is the original...

On the surface a beautiful and enjoyable film, but the storyline is crass and unoriginal. The young and innocent girl being preened by her family to become the mistress of a much older playboy is pretty sick; and the transformation of Gigi is too reminiscent of "My Fair Lady".
