The happy existence of Joe (Colin Firth) and his young family is turned upside down in an instant when a horrific car accident takes the life of his wife. In search of a fresh start, Joe decides to leave behind his home in the United States - which holds too many memories of a once-happy family - and relocate himself and his two young daughters to the exotic town of Genova, Italy. But contrary to the new beginnings he had hoped to find, it appears that the thick fog of grief hanging over their household continues to afflict them all.

Very very long and silent. Interesting conflict build-up--that's pretty much the whole film. Is something bad going to happen....is something bad going to happen....? Very tense.

Have to agree with the negative reviewers on this one. With all of the ingredients this film should have had a lot more substance. Instead the director fluffed it. It wasn't bad, just deflating, a bit empty. Sort of like those meals that were all the rage at fancy restaurants a few years ago, ie. tasty and eye catching but small, lost on the large plate and at the end leaving you saying "was that all?" The menacing city alleys was done to death, the girl on the motor cycle was done to death. The jerky camera didn't add anything. The acting was great and the setting wonderful and the story, as far as it went, was quite good, but there was just something missing.

Enjoyed the movie and Italian scenery around Genova. Thought it ended a bit abruptly.

I watched this twice - once on my own and then with a friend because I enjoyed it so much I wanted her to see it too.

Oh I cried, this is a heartbreaking study of a family cracked & lost, while seemingly misplaced in a foreign place. There was a tension throughout, very strong character development - a stellar cast, this was touching and difficult to watch. I don't know how anyone with a heart could say this is boring, or sloppy! Do you lack any sense of empathy? Was is it all too implicit for you? These reviews boggle the mind. I hope people actually look up movie reviews at somewhere like metacritic and don't trust these user reviews - talk about missing the point!

Although it doesn't lead to a memorable climax, this film about a family grieving the accidental death of the wife/mother is quite beautifully made, though a little drawn out. The acting, particularly from the youngesat daughter, is exceptional.

Meandering, sloppy film - similar in overall plot-line to 'Don't Look Now' - but nowhere near as good

OMG A nothing plot that led no-where. No character development and when it ended I just sat there thinking that I had wasted an afternoon. Even the scenery was dreary, not easy for Italy but it just goes to show if you try hard you can even make that look unappealing.

This certainly was not a thriller as described. There was some drama, cast - good, acting - great, filming - great, scenery - lovely but where did the story lead? This one had an excellent beginning but the middle went on and on and on........ I didn't get the relationship between Jo and Barbara, or Kelly's attitude towards her father. It would have made more sense if they had all been angry with Mary. When I tried to make some sense from it.... Mary had to choose between following her dead mother to her own death in traffic or the safety of the sidewalk and life with father and sister, my family shouted me down and said it was a waste of or time and a waste of film. I'll be wondering about this movie for .... a few days probably.

If you want a SIMPLE story about a family dealing with grief, this is it. 3 main characters the youngest daughter blaming herself for the death of her Mother, a selfish teenager and a Father trying to get everything back to normality so moves them to Italy. Small production, honest effort but extremely slow build up that amounted to nothing. Firth???s character never developed. all we got was a lost kid, piano lessons, going to a new school, boyfriends, relationships not going anywhere, very abrupt. Basic stuff that did not have enough substance to maintain our interest. Very abrupt ending, overall disappointing.

I was really looking forward to seeing this after reading some positive reviews, but I feel a little underwhelmed having now seen it. The performances are all fine, in fact, better than fine, but I just found it lacking something. I'm not sure if it was the almost documentary style of filming, but it didn't drag me in as I'd hoped. Still worth watching.

I was really looking forward to watching this movie as I love Colin Firth BUT. . . . . I was very disappointed it just didn't have 'anything', it is the story of a widower coming to terms with the lose of his beloved Wife while raising two Daughters, one with sad emotional trauma and a teenage acting out her rebellion. Worth watching once but wouldn't bother again.

What a complete waste of time. What was it all about? Started nowhere & went nowhere.Acting was non-discript,all the scenes-apart from the beach-were barely visible it was so dark. Very, very dissappointing.

The Extras on the DVD are more interesting than the movie. They actually help to put the movie in context and get an appreciation of what it was supposed to be about: normal family life with a teenager in the rebellious phase and a younger sister having some understandable issues given her experiences. The city of Genoa itself comes across as a menacing presence rather than picture postcard. Overall, it's a very mundane story, banal and not very interesting.

The "thriller" genre classification should be removed from this. Drama it was. A sad and bleak movie but not uninteresting. Good storyline, but it seemed to go nowhere. The acting of the young daughter was heartbreaking in parts. Not for everyone - and certainly there was no "thriller" to it at all.
