Strong violence

Director: Michael Haneke
Actors: Tim Roth, Naomi Watts, Michael Pitt, Brady Corbet, Devon Gearhart

In this remake of Michael Haneke's artistic exploration of violence, a bourgeoisie family take their summer vacation at their luxurious lake-front house on Long Island. Shortly after settling in, two men take the family hostage and begin to play games that involve physically and mentally torturing them. The games gradually get more life-threatening, and eventually one of the men makes a bet with the audience: the family will be dead by 9 am the next morning.

One of the most disturbing, yet bizarre films I've ever seen. Be warned, this is not for the feint of heart.

Naomi, why didn't you read this script properly before you accepted it? This script has so many non believable aspects to it, for example, how it was possible that these bad guys gained such easy access to their home with little force and no guns?? Naomi's character initially showed herself to be an intelligent woman with a bit of guts but how she and her pathetic husband (I mean so pathetic that he was almost unwatchable) almost 'lay down' to allow these creeps to take over them. And then there was the scene where Naomi found it more necessary to turn off the TV than to see her son lying beside it? Not the work of the caring mother her character was. Now I haven't seen the original version of this movie, and certainly won't now , but it was directed by the same fellow and if he was content to put this movie into the cinemas then I can't imagine the original to be any better as he directed and wrote that one as well. Could've been much better. Painful to watch. Thumbs down to this one.

Due respect to Naomi Watts, she's a great actress and we love her. Though she is the executive producer of this film, itis not something I would rate very highly. Plot-wise, skilfully crafted..

The original by Haneke was a complete movie and I'm not sure why he wanted to repeat the exercise (apart from making it accessible to US (and Australian?) viewers who don't seem capable to watch non-English language movies. Pitt's character works well in the remake but Brady Corbet is just a tad to much a 'nice boy' for this role. My advice: watch the original then only watch this as a curio.

This film had to overcome my other half's unfair bias against Naomi Watts and to its credit did so. The boys terrorizing was pitch perfect. The flaws are if you are going for shock value there is no such thing as too much, the film doesn't have the same impact as The Strangers. Naomi, if your character is getting humiliated and degraded let us see it too.Tim Roth works well as the hapless husband who cannot protect his family. If there was less implied violence and nudity there would be more stars.

Awful. Absolutely awful. Suspense? Where? Bored, bored, bored. I felt as though they ran out of script half way through the film and just improvised the rest. Way too many flaws in the script to be even remotely believable.

Extrememly disturbing movie. i watched it to the end hoping for a positive outcome but there was no relief. It was well done but I wouldn't have watched it if I had known how disturbing it would be. Its the most chilling movie I've ever seen.

The info about the movie should be re-written, it is really misleading. Makes the movie sound a lot more fun than it really is. VERY slow and weird. The rewind thing completely ruined it for me, really stupid.

A brilliant and very disturbing film. How did Naomi Watts not get an Oscar nomination for this role let alone not win the Academy Award for her all too real performance. It breaks 2 of Hollywood's long established traditions and one of them is the safe predictable "happy ending" that is the reason a few brainless dingbats have given this extremely memorable film bad reviews. Easily the best film Ive seen this year. Why? because it really messes with you. That is what art is supposed to do.

I hated this movie, but it did have some interesting things to say. It was frustrating and harrowing to watch, but how it differs from virtually ever other movie covering the kind of scenario is that the film maker had a message about violence and the way that movies like this typically handle violence. We want to see the man of the house prevail and beat the crap out of them and somehow get the better of the bad guys in the end. We want to feel relieved and see justice prevail at the end. Don't hold your breath. Most people won't enjoy this film at all and probably regret the choice, but then some will appreciate the message. I appreciated it, but didn't think the ordeal of watching this movie was worth it for the message.

Excellent film. Hard to suggest to casual viewers as it is a heavy commentary on the slasher and torture-porn genre. However, if you like thought-provoking films that are still genuinely entertaining, then you are in for a treat. So many viewers and reviewers have completely missed the point. An art-house version of Scream? Kind of.

This movie was recommended by a friend - the only way to sum up this movie is...STRANGE... The twisted storyline of this film is at times hard to follow, how ever the only reason I could continue watching is because I wanted to know what was coming next. Naomi Watts is very good in this movie, highly disturbing.

From the first few minutes of the opening scene, where they are driving, I knew this was going to be a 'different' movie because of the camera angles they were using. Then all of a sudden this heavy metal music plays and scares me a little because I wasn't expecting it. The movie was ok, not a huge fan of Naomi Watts, but the 'at a glance' description made me think it would be an interesting movie to watch. The ending makes you think that the cycle will repeat itself.

I was going to give this movie 2 stars but then there is that so called twist in the last 10 minutes that involves an Adam Sandler in "Click" type moment that destroys any semblance of credibility this film had. It is pointless. Maybe that is what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. Tim Roth is a sap.

I wonder why? Haneke remade the exact same movie with as for only differences the language and the actors! All the rest of it, from the first frame to the last, from the story to the dialogues, from the music to the clothing, is EXACTLY identical to the german version Haneke made few years ago. So yes I wonder why! If you haven't seen the first version, you might find this interesting however if you have seen the first film, forget about this one because you will have the feeling to watch again the same movie. Btw good performances from the actors however the actors from the german version were as good (and certainly less paid :)

I was sort of looking forward to seeing this, and also dreading it a bit based on what i had heard about the original and what Naomi Watts had to say. I found it somewhat intriguing, particularly when one of the characters insisted on speaking directly to the audience, thereby breaking through that wall. The violence is for the most part implied, but it is still hard to watch although i think worth the effort. It is a thought provoking insight into privilege and its' abuse; the way the ruling class allows its members to feel justified in going so far as to slap a boy they don't even know; and of course how quickly everything you thought you know to be true and solid can disappear with the knock at the door. Go on... add it to your queue!

Very good movie, however the content was very disturbing - not just the violence aspect; the two evil characters were chilling in their cold, calm and truly sick personas. I did manage to watch it to the end, but admit to feeling very uncomfortable throughout.

I cant believe how people think this rubbish is great. A family is taken hostage by two killers who talk like upper class butlers and must fight for their lives. The acting is uneven with Watts giving the best performance out of a bad lot. The direction starts off well but instead of what could had been Desperate Hours for the 21st century falls apart half way through and turns to the most bizarre plot twists that are not belieable for a miro-second. There is clearly a rip off of Shocker in one scene with a TV remote. The villians are plainly more annoying than evil. I applaud the absense of gore aiming for suspense but the film ends like a cheap 1980's horror film that left a bad taste in my mouth. Sorry for those who liked this but I simply hated it.

What can i say about this film? Its well made, yes, its extremely well acted, yes. But is it enjoyable to watch? No. 'Funny Games' would have to be one of the most twisted, shocking and sick films i have ever seen. Its so morbid and dark that its impossible to view as entertaining. This film was created to shock and disturb its audience, and trust me, it does exactly that. A shot by shot remake of an Austrian film from the same Director, under the same name. Don't say i didn't warn you. I give it 3/5 stars.
