High level violence, hugh level themes

Director: Michael Haneke
Actors: Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Mühe, Arno Frisch, Frank Giering, Stefan Clapczynski, Doris Kunstmann, Christoph Bantzer, Wolfgang Glück, Susanne Meneghel, Monika Zallinger

When a wealthy family arrive for a week at their lakeside villa, their idyll doesn’t last long. While father and son sail the lake in their yacht, mother Anna is asked by a neighbour’s house guests for a handful of eggs. But their neat, educated appearance betrays a sinister intention, and Anna realises these two men play games. Cat-and-mouse games. Haneke’s study of emotional terror and senseless violence is one of the most chilling ever made.

quite twisted and terrifying in concept. also regretably plausabile. the film is directed very well and there is not much actual violence displayed on screen, but hideous deeds are throughout, and cut to the bone. if you cant read (or dont speak austrian), then a perfectly servicable adaptation(98% scene for scene) has been made by the americans also called funny games(2007). with a harrowing performance by naomi watts and my favourite not utalised enough actor, tim roth. this movie un-nerved me, which happens rarely. lock up your family and shoot strangers on site. (not really) strangers are peeps too :)

Great acting and direction. Disturbing and yet moments of humour. A must see I think.

Really good, dark and uncomfortable, but with moments of black humour. Extremely interesting and cerebral, conceptual premise, Haneke is a true master.

A film that plays games with the audience as well as the film's villains playing games with their victims. Neither is funny. It's a frightening scenario of a secured and idyllic refuge for the rich not being as safe as they would think. And very polite, intelligent young men are not always what they might seem.

Violent and horrible but if you listen to the writer/director's talk you can understand why he made it. What he says is perfectly true as well.

This is my first venture into foreign horror/thriller films and was pleasantly surprised. The story was quite engaging. But not enough gore for my liking.

Beautifully cast and executed, this is really quite frightening. I would have liked to know more about the villains and why.

This film is a favourite - ironically the whingers who scream "Save The Children!" would probably save the two main protagonists. Involving the audience much more than most people will realise until very late in the film, Haneke intentionally creates a situation of near hopelessness, then puts the boot in anyway. The film forces viewers to deal with harrowing murder in the same format Hollywood serves on a platter: thrill killing with a generous sprinkling of witty one liners. Just don't start cheering too much - for either team...

I'd only add that the acting is more superior in this, the original version of 'Funny Games', than it is in the 2008 English language remake.

This is a film that is to be appreciated rather than enjoyed - it wasn't until after the film had finished that I 'got' this film. Haneke messes with the audience like you wouldn't imagine. Very clever, but definately not for everyone.

Definately a film for people who prefer the unexpected and who don't like 'Hollywood' predictable story lines and endings. This film frightened me and I couldn't sleep for trying to work out what I would have done in their situation. Well made, brilliantly acted and filmed.

Worth a watch as the director made here a masterpiece of violence and cruelty. The story could be translated as simple however it is not as the plot remains full of unanswered questions. After watching it, you will be more careful who you open your house to :) If you are ready for an unfunny ride, go ahead. Fans of THE LAST HOUSE OF THE LEFT or THE STRANGERS will love FUNNY GAME. The others will just hate the sick game of those 2 psychos.

Sick and Twisted - for those who like their suspense films with a very dark sense of humour. I loved it. I can't believe he remade the film for an American audience.

I watched this film because I read that Hollywood is doing a re-make with Naomi Watts. I wanted to see what the original was like. I was surprised, it was quite suspenseful and when you think the movie is over it moves to another level. Well worth a look...

I really liked this movie, but wasn't that excited by it. It was suspenseful and well acted, and had some surprises, but when I was telling my husband about it, it wasn't one that I told him he absolutely had to watch.

Excellent film by Haneke, who keeps you guessing and keeps twisting the knife throughout. Benefits from more than one viewing!

while i can see why some people wouldn't like this film (the self referential element did get tiring by the end), i think it was a brilliantly paced, well acted and beautifully shot film. well worth a watch.

This is one of the most disturbing films i have ever seen. On the surface it is an incredibly tense and suspenseful psycho thriller about a brutal home invasion but this movie messes with your head in ways you have to see to believe. Haneke removes the barrier between the audience and the onscreen action but we, the audience, dont become part of the family's nightmare, we become the cause of it. This is a brilliantly made and acted film and deserves its R rating but in the tradition of "Psycho", what we imagine is far worse than what we actually see. The most disturbing thing about this film is the way it forces the audience to consider our ever increasing desire to see brutality on the screen. Considering the current crop of 'realistic' horror films like Hostel 2 it is a very pertinent question.
