Wealthy, brilliant, and meticulous Ted Crawford, a structural engineer in Los Angeles, shoots his wife and entraps her lover. He signs a confession; at the arraignment, he asserts his rights to represent himself and asks the court to move immediately to trial. The prosecutor is Willy Beachum, a hotshot who's soon to join a fancy civil-law firm, told by everyone it's an open and shut case. Crawford sees Beachum's weakness, the hairline fracture of his character: Willy's a winner. The engineer sets in motion a clockwork crime with all the objects moving in ways he predicts.

Did not realise till got disc this movie was on TV recently very late at night.
Not worth of Anthony Hopkins. Too placed. he was stilted in his manner and movement. May have been enjoyable if had not turned it off part way through.
Did try to watch it again but did not even get 10 mins into it.So posted it back asap

Edge of the seat thriller. How do you commit the perfect crime genre. Sir Anthony in a role as chilling ass Hannibal Lector . You know he is guilty, you know he has been caught, confessed, gne to trial. Then how does he manage to get away with it? Beautifully filmed and acted. Worth watching twice to see how cleverly the clues have been planted.

A well executed film. This film grabs you from the opening titles and you know it's going to be good right until the end scene. I Loved the opening titles with the strange contraption that's featured, that the character played by Anthony Hopkins has created himself. A good legal thriller that keeps you guessing to the end as to how Mr. Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) is going to get away with it?. Good performances from Anthony Hopkins.
(He, like Jack Nicholson, are from a special mould and they just nail it everytime), but was expecting a lttle more from Ryan Gosling the prosecuting lawyer, Willy) but he doesn't deter from the film and it's worth getting out nonetheless.

Hopkins playing a bit like Hannibal. Very intelligent but criminal. Although in this case, he is not inherently evil, just pushed that way by the behaviour of a infidel wife. He hatches a plan to bury her and her boyfriend and keeps you guessing along the way.

This movie was GREAT. A real little surprise package. Anthony Hopkins is wonderful and Ryan Gosling is excellent in this mystery thriller which keeps you guessing the whole time.....it's a very clever story and really entertaining. You will love it!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Good acting and storyline. My only criticism is the persistence with Directors in using too much dark in night scenes. The old hands seemed to manage to easily convey a night scene and still let the viewer see what was going on. Perhaps they are now being cheap.

Great contrast between a cocky lawyer on his way up, a smart business man who just get's out of his depth and a lieutenant who get's his "you know what" caught in all the wrong places. Hopkins and Gosling go head to head and what a head bang this movie is. It leaves you on the edge of your seat all the way to the end. Love it! One of the best crime and court room movies I've seen.

As usual Anthony Hopkins doesn't give a poor performance. He holds your interest till the end of the movie and you have to pay attention to everything not to miss anything. The cast he is with does not let the movie down for what could turn out to be just another cop/murder movie.

The plot is completely unbelievable although quite predictable and there were many irrelevant scenes which seem to have been added for filler and the other actors really are just average. I'd like to give this a 2.5 stars really :)

Ryan Gosling was very clever in this, he at times hid his emotions very well, was very passionate about his goal. Anthony Hopkins was very menacing, very evil. This was a good thriller, twists and turns throughout.

This movie is stuctured around the plot device so favoured by Hollywood, the courtroom drama. There must be one set in every studio permanently erected because it won't be long before it is needed again. The legal processes side of things portrayed in the movie is so thin you would have to be in grade 8 or so not to see the holes in it. What saves this movie is the acting ability of Anthony Hopkins. He hardly makes a gesture ("Willy" please take notice) He is able to show with his face and the nuances of his voice the emotions the part makes him feel. Worth the going with the "plot that could never happen" to see Hopkins in action.

A pretty simple – but highly unusual – story of crime and justice. It keeps you guessing which way it’s going to go – and the clues are easy to miss, but are revealed in the end. All in all a great movie. The DVD has a few deleted scenes and alternative endings which are worth contemplating whether they would have made it better.

This is probably the best film I've seen this year. It is an engaging thriller despite the ending being obvious too early for my liking. The actors were all great especially Anthony Hopkins as the wealthy man accused of killing his wife and Ryan Gosling as the prosecuting attorney. You could do far worse than watch this.
