London, 1862, a young orphan named Susan Trinder (Sally Hawkins) grows up amongst the petty thieves known as Fingersmiths, under the guidance of Mrs Suckerby (Imelda Staunton). One evening, Richard 'The Gentleman' Rivers (Rupert Evans) pays them a visit. Rivers has an elaborate plan to defraud the wealthy heiress, Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy). Susan agrees to help for a cut of the money, and is quickly installed as Maud's maid. Upon arriving, she discovers that Maud is virtually a prisoner in her own house, as Uncle Christopher (Charles Dance) controls every detail of her life. As the plan begins to unfold, Susan finds herself developing an intimate relationship with the lady of the house...

Watchable, but a little on the stranger side. Beautiful English countryside scenery. The ending wasn't as I had thought.

Wish I hadn't bothered. A dreary movie, no inspiration, no laughs, very dull.

haven't read the book but pleasantly surprised. Slow start but develops into a good historical thriller with fine acting

The obsession of having to repeat lesbian love scenes, spoiled what was essentially a good story, albeit a bit far fetched. This one failed to meet my expectations.

Very enjoyable 1860's drama with great acting, costumes, scenery and of course storyline with a surprise twist that came as a real shock. If anything a little too long at around 3 hrs plus the special features behind the scenes. Very authentic!

Excrutiatingly boring in virtually every detail. How can you take a voyeuristic storyline, period setting and world of potentially interesting character plays and make a movie that's a cure for insomnia? For all the answers, watch this movie.

This movie is a classic portray of the era of the mid 19th century. Good story, well played and directed.Enjoyable, engaging and very suspense full 3hours.A word of warning, this movie is in two parts on one disk,so when the movie seems to be finished and the list of players come on, wait. The second part(the gist of the story)is on the same disk.ENJOY.

This one was ok but no where near as good as Tipping the Velvet. Haven't read any Sarah Waters novels but she writes a good yarn and this movie had a great twist to it. Found it to be a bit drawn out and slow in parts but Imelda Staunton was a standout performance, as usual, while the rest of the cast were adequate in their roles.
