Strong coarse language, violence and drug use

Director: David O. Russell
Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, Jack Mcgee

The story unfolds on the gritty, blue-collar streets of Lowell, Mass, where Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale) was once known as "The Pride of Lowell" having gone the distance with the world champion Sugar Ray Leonard. However, after losing that fight, like the town of Lowell, Dickie's fallen on hard times. His boxing days are behind him and his life has become shattered by drug abuse. Younger brother Mickey, (Mark Wahlberg) meanwhile, has become the family's fighter and fading hope for a champion. But despite all of his work, Mickey's career is failing and he loses fight after punishing fight. Dickie and Mickey's tougher-than-nails mother, Alice (Melissa Leo), manages his career and Dickie serves as his highly unreliable trainer. When Mickey's latest fight nearly kills him, it looks like it could all be over - until his iron-willed new girlfriend, Charlene (Amy Adams), convinces him to do the unthinkable: split with his family, pursue his own interests and train without his increasingly volatile and criminal brother. Now Mickey has the chance of a lifetime as he earns a shot at the World Championship. But when his brother and dysfunctional family re-enter his life, they must all reconcile their pasts and become more than just a family in name. With Mickey and Dickie reunited, this becomes more than just a fight - it's an all-out comeback for these brothers, their family, and their city. When it's over, Mickey will have become a World Champion, a Hall of Fame legend, and the new "Pride of Lowell". The fighter is a moving and often humorous drama about fighting for the people you love.

I'm not into fighting or boxing movies but I thought this film was excellent. It has a great story (based on real life characters), amazing acting (Christian Bale is incredible - check out the special features after watching the movie, Melissa Leo & Amy Adams give gutsy performances too). Highly recommended.

An excellent film, Melissa Leo and Christian Bale definitely deserved their Oscar awards. The film, is gripping, engrossing and sometimes tragic. Excellently acted, well written and well directed.

This movie starts slow and at times can occasionally feel like a crawl..However, it throws in some knockout punches of its own and in the end, comes out a really good movie. Bale and Walberg give a truly great acting performance. Look beyond the boxing, the movie isnt only about that.

This one was for my partner who is a fan of Christian Bale, and Mark Wahlberg who I like. Also stars Amy Adams who was quite different as she normally does the sweet talking roles. I have no interest in boxing but as this was based on a true story I found myself drawn into it and have to say it was very good.

Fantastic film, well cast and brilliantly acted by all. Mark Wahlberg was superb. Christian Bale was unbelievable and whoever played their mother was brilliant. Definitely recommended, even if you aren't a fan of boxing. My husband and I loved it and were on the edge of our seats throughout the boxing matches.

David O. Russell's latest features the kind of acting whereby known actors submerge their personalities (Christian Bale is freaky as a crack addict; Melissa Leo is the rough family matriarch who won the Oscar, as did Bale; Mark Wahlberg underplays and seems himself). But, for me, the characters were unappealing and the story arc familiar (by the end). If I were more of a boxing fan, perhaps this would have grabbed me even as I appreciated the craft on display.

I thought this film was fantastic. I don't normally like boxing films, I think it's a stupid sport - but the acting is great and the story line will keep you interested. Christian Bale was exceptional as Dicky. Well worth a watch!

With all of the reviews I expected this movie to be better than it was. I enjoyed it but it was slow paced and in the end a little shallow in the depth of the story. Acting was excellent from all the leads but ultimately for all of us it did not live up to the hype.
