Strong coarse language, violence and drug use

Director: David O. Russell
Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, Jack Mcgee

The story unfolds on the gritty, blue-collar streets of Lowell, Mass, where Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale) was once known as 'The Pride of Lowell' having gone the distance with the world champion Sugar Ray Leonard. However, after losing that fight, like the town of Lowell, Dickie's fallen on hard times. His boxing days are behind him and his life has become shattered by drug abuse. Younger brother Mickey, (Mark Wahlberg) meanwhile, has become the family's fighter and fading hope for a champion. But despite all of his work, Mickey's career is failing and he loses fight after punishing fight. Dickie and Mickey's tougher-than-nails mother, Alice (Melissa Leo), manages his career and Dickie serves as his highly unreliable trainer. When Mickey's latest fight nearly kills him, it looks like it could all be over - until his iron-willed new girlfriend, Charlene (Amy Adams), convinces him to do the unthinkable: split with his family, pursue his own interests and train without his increasingly volatile and criminal brother. Now Mickey has the chance of a lifetime as he earns a shot at the World Championship. But when his brother and dysfunctional family re-enter his life, they must all reconcile their pasts and become more than just a family in name. With Mickey and Dickie reunited, this becomes more than just a fight - it's an all-out comeback for these brothers, their family, and their city. When it's over, Mickey will have become a World Champion, a Hall of Fame legend, and the new "Pride of Lowell". The fighter is a moving and often humorous drama about fighting for the people you love.

The Fighter tells the true story of brothers Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale); the former is a down-and-out boxer with a chance at a title shot, and the latter is his drug-addled trainer eager to make good. A true story it may be, but that synopsis screams ‘sports-movie-cliché’. Thankfully, director David O. Russell has no intention of fulfilling our expectations of what a boxing movie should be. There’s no swelling score, saccharine sheen, or howling, pious performances. The Fighter doesn’t take place in “movie land”, where the ‘aw shucks’ citizens are quaint, supportive and all-knowing. The setting - Lowell, Massachusetts circa 1993 - is alive, set to the strains of a dynamic early-90s soundtrack. Our hero is soft-spoken, and seemingly incapable of making an inspiring speech. The supporting characters are abrasive, and full of bad advice. It’s a film that takes place in a real setting, has real characters, and doesn’t delude itself about the reality of certain situations. And it’s a damn shame that “authenticity” alone is what sets apart good movies from the bad.

Russell has rediscovered what it means to make an inspirational film. With The Fighter he returns the genre to its grimy roots, just as he did with his Gulf War masterpiece Three Kings, in which he reminded viewers (in graphic detail) that people die in battle and it ain’t no honourable thing. The Fighter is inspirational in the same way the original Rocky was inspirational; when you start from the bottom, the smallest victories feel like the biggest. Russell and screenwriters Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson don’t need to invent giant fist-pumping moments to touch us.

The film battles against the worst movie spoiler of all – history, and it’s ever reliable information transportation device, Wikipedia – and there’s nothing we can do about that, but allow me to offer a brief plot synopsis. Micky Ward is what they call at “stepping stone”; an easy-to-beat opponent real contenders use to make their way to the top of the charts, or ladder, or whatever they use to rank boxers (I’m a film critic; as if I watch sports!). Understandably, his self-esteem is shot. It doesn’t help that his mother/manager Alice (Melissa Leo, having a little too much fun) quite clearly favours her other son Dicky. Sure, he’s a failed fighter himself, plus a junkie to boot, but hot damn he’s charismatic (and Bale, for the first time in a long time, is indeed brimming with charisma). Offered the opportunity to make some real money and fight some real fights, Micky – spurred on by spunky girlfriend Charlene (Amy Adams) – defies his family and goes for a title shot. But can he ever really leave behind Alice, Dicky, his seven sisters (seven!) and three decades of shame and failure? “I’ve been to Lowell, but I’ve never been to me…”

Bale and Leo give the showiest performances, and they’re indeed great, but it’s a shame they’ll likely dominate the award season. The doe-eyed Wahlberg has been readying his wounded soul for some time now, and although he prematurely revealed it in The Lovely Bones (to hilarious effect!), it is now set to stun. He brings unparalleled athleticism to the fight scenes, and tenderness to the rest. It’s still the somewhat-simple-seeming Wahlberg in action here; the one we’ve often dismissed. Although the film is filled with memorable performances from vibrant character actors (a polite way to say scene-chewers), he dares to subvert the idea of a “leading man” by playing one who cannot survive without those around him. Although Dicky and Charlene and Alice carry Micky, it is Wahlberg who carries this cast.

David O. Russell doesn’t try any unusual camera tricks that have come to be a trademark of his. After a number of on-set outbursts and disagreements over the course of his short career, it seemed like the talented filmmaker had been in “director jail”. The Fighter should have been his ‘getting-back-on-the-wagon’ flick; a conventional studio film that he could churn out on time and under budget. And to a degree it is. But it’s also much more; he brings heart, humour and humanity to The Fighter, and can always be relied on to bring brutality and truth to a medium where it is sadly a rarer and rarer occurrence.

4/5

The movie was a disappointment. The acting (especially by the mother) was excellent but a lot of the dialogue was difficult to hear and the fight scenes were a bit weak. That may have been due to miscasting. I like Mark Wahlberg but this film was not my cup of tea.

How good was Christian Bale he played the part to a T, when you see the reel character at the end of the movie it's like looking into a mirror. The matriarch of the family is such an unlikeable person you wanted to scream (any wonder she beat Jackie Weaver for the Oscar) the performances from the hole cat are exceptional but bale as the broken own fighter with a drug problem is outstanding and if you like a happy ending you get that as well.

Underdog wins title - no surprises there - but watch it for the warmhearted recreation of a working class family in a working class neighbourhood. Christian Bale's performance alone makes this a must–see movie.

Good story. Well worth watching to the end. Slow start. Almost turned it off after the first 20 minutes, but the main actors were great. Micks family members were really annoying, but maybe thats how it really was in real life. Not sure if i'd recommend it anyone not into boxing though.

A very good film. Rocky with a lot of realism and excellent acting. The characterisations were terrific, and yes there are some awful characters, but that is half the fun, they think they are the normal people. Intereresting family dynamics plus a story of redemption.

This movie is well-worth persevering with to the end. A gritty and real portrayal of a blue-collar town and the dysfunctional dynamics of a large family. Without knowing the history behind the movie (which we didn't), it's hard to predict how it will end. The quiet character of Micky is dominated by the poor decisions of his ebullient mother and older brother, both played brilliantly and harrowingly. Slowly, Micky breaks free, with feisty Charlene in his corner, but then Dicky is back, out of jail and clean.... Dicky's return is like a knife-edge, and the scene with the cake and the crack-house is pivotal. A few criticisms: in the final "interview" scene, Dicky has rather a wide-eyed look that we thought indicated he was back on the crack (he wasn't); also the rolling street scene at the beginning was a bit "cheesy". The DVD included a director's commentary which was fascinating. Mickey O'Keefe, the cop/trainer, was played by himself, as were several of the minor characters. Other minor characters were played by Lowell locals. The fight scenes were essentially played according to history.

It was, for me, surprisingly a great movie. To fully appreciate it, you do need to see it through right until the end and see the journey all of the characters take, growing in their own unique ways. Wahlberg's character, Mickey, is a man of many colours. He begins as Robin to his brother's Batman, playing second fiddle in many ways to his "local legend" brother Dickie. But as the movie plays through and Mickey meets a few people who believe in him, not just his brother, he starts believing in himself too and backing himself to carry through with a Title shot in the boxing world he lives and breathes. And he stands up to his family, who have spent far more time idolising his brother Dickie than acknowledging Mickey has any talents of his own, at least to be much better than just a "fall guy" or "stepping stone" for other fighters to climb over on their way to the top. Amy Adams does a great job being the strong, feisty new girlfriend, who supports Mickey in his journey too, and Christian Bale does a great job too, as the somewhat has-been, down-and-out, and rough-diamond boxer / older brother to Mickey. The viewer is encouraged to dislike Mickey's unsupportive, rough and somewhat uneducated family at first; however, by the end of the movie, we find ourselves feeling a little more compassion for them and understanding, just as they do too for Mickey. The Fighter is an entertaining and interesting movie, presenting the true story of boxers Mickey Ward and Dickie Ekland.

Good biopic based on a true story. Mark Wahlberg puts in a fairly decent performance as a low rent rocky clone with an appalling white trash family and a crack addicted "coulda been a contender" older brother as the millstone around his neck. An excellent movie. I especially enjoyed the sensitive portrayal of the dynamics between family members, new loves and loyalties. Bale was excellent in his role as the older Eklund and Wahlberg did not disappoint. A surprising choice of role for Adams. The only thing that marred the movie was the faulty DVD frame-freezing towards 3/4 of the movie.

I can see why Chrisian Bale won the oscar for Best Support with his portrayal of Dicky - particularly when you get to see a clip of Dicky at the end. However, overall - even though the performances were good - this movie failed to captivate me. Perhaps this could be because the subject matter - boxing - doesn't interest me much, and the boxing movie has probably been pretty much been done. If you are into boxing or Boston this film will be for you.

Similiar to Black Swan i was putting off watching this film even though i knew it was supposed to be good. The strong suit of this movie is the acting of Christian Bale. Can you believe this guy plays Batman? He is just fabulous as Dicky Ward, and is more than ably supported by Melissa Leo as his indulgent mother. Rightfully awarded with Oscars, the Ward family has a distinctly Aussie bogan feel about it, and we laughed every time there was a group shot of the sisters. Terrific.

A great family drama unfolds amidst the struggle of a boxer to reach the top. Ultimately it's a feel-good flick, but a rocky road to get to the end. It really is all about Christian Bale's character, and while Marky Mark is acceptable, Bale is exceptional. I always knew he was an actor to watch, and watching him in "The Fighter" is riveting. Surprisingly funny, warm and touching, you can't go past "The Fighter".
