When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. It’s not the sign of a particularly good film when the entire cast could be replaced by belligerent three-year-olds and you could expect most of the line readings to remain exactly the same. Fast and Furious 5 (or Fast Five, or Five 5ive, or For F&F’s Sake, or Ffffff) primarily consists of a bunch of boys standing around pouting, posturing, and like all good toddlers, obsessing over breasts like they still require them for sweet, nutritious milk. This metaphor is not weakened by the fact star Vin Diesel, at one point in the film, pronounces the word ‘Father’ as ‘Farthurghhh’. But the Fast and Furious saga has never been about emotional maturity, and certainly not enunciation. It’s about cars. Fast cars. Furious cars. 5ars. This film does few things well, but it does succeed in making you want to feel the wind whip through your hair and your gut lurch as you power past 160km/hour in a Dodge Charger (or in my case, a 2003 Holden Barina with a sun-damaged roof).

Even I, a vehicle-illiterate film geek whose entire body has less muscle definition than Dwayne Johnson’s left glute, occasionally feels the need for speed. But I must say I was perplexed and disappointed at how few car chase sequences were actually in this film; inexcusable considering its 130 minute runtime. What must the revheads think? Aside from a logic-defying but still rather awesome climactic race through the streets, director Justin Lin and screenwriter Chris Morgan presume fans will be sated merely by the return of beloved actors from the previous instalments. They presumed wrongly.

The plot (no, seriously): Having freed gang leader Dom (Diesel) from a bus headed to prison, lovers Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) decide to keep their heads low in Rio de Janeiro – for about 10 seconds. The speedsters agree to help some locals boost a bunch of flashy cars (don’t ask me to name the specific makes) from a train, not realising that they contain something deeply valuable to corrupt local businessman Hernan (Joaquim de Almeida). When the dust settles following the heist, our (kinda) innocent trio discovers they have been framed for the murder of some American feds, and take-no-prisoners DSS Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is sent to Brazil to take them down. Dom, Brian and Mia decide to run one last job – ripping off Hernan to the sum of $100 million – so that they can finally be free from their sexy criminal lives. They call in favours from characters you may recognise from earlier films, or, if you’ve not seen the previous flicks, famous rappers.

Lin knows his way around an action sequence; it’s just a shame that Morgan doesn’t give him that many to work with. The few races and car chases we are treated to are absolutely joyless; no matter how outrageous a scenario they find themselves in, Brian and Dom never get nervous, or whoop in joy, or look at one another and mouth “Can you believe this ****?!” Perhaps their stoicism is meant to represent intense badassery. I remember seeing the first Fast and the Furious film when I was 13; my teenage friend describe the acting as "Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger-esque". It remains the best description to this day. Lin has proven his comic chops and ability to work with rich characters on the TV show Community, but there's no evidence of those talents here. The only subtle moments are shared between the endlessly competitive Diesel and Johnson; frankly, with all time they spend staring into one another’s eyes and homoerotically wrestling on the ground, I expected the film to end with the two adversaries kissing passionately. Hey, at least that would have been an arc.

2/5

This movie is extremely poorly written and directed, even for this franchise, and the action use more bullets and rocket launchers than a Rambo movie. Having said that the performances are ok and the cars are excellent. Pretty much what is expected of this kind of movie.

I am a fan of Vin Diesel, having watched several of his movies. This movie is very James Band but on the wrong side of the law, with the object, in the end, of bringing down the cities money hungry boss. The way the cars in the movie were used was mind blowing, albiet almost impossible, and the car chases destroyed more police cars than I have ever seen. A very good movie for excitement and suspense and of course fights. Even double crossing. Has even some family love in it!!

A bit dull really -- the car race scenes that made the first so enjoyable are now few and far between. If you're a car fan, you'll be sadly disappointed.

What an outrageous actioner..... but so much fun. Chases in cars hardly outdoes the rooftop chase. Really enjoyed this one.

Over the top, unbelievable, testosterone filled romp. My husband loved it - thought I would not as not a ' rev head' - however awesome stunt driving and car chases - which is the whole point of these films. Don't take it too seriously - a 10 tonne vault not even breaking a tree? HA! Loved it.

FF5 was never moved into the top 5 of my queue list but it got delivered anyway. Didn't even played it till the night that there was nothing AT ALL on cable/tele/cyberspace! I was 'disappointed' because it exceeded well over the expectations (maybe because it was already low esp after FF3). Beside being a buddy(ies) film and having that good guy - bad guy - badder guy chemistries, I thought it was cleverly written and action sequences were entertaining. A bit slow in the middle but last action scene was worth the wait. Track at the end wrapped the feeling of the movie. Enjoyable!

This is light, fun movie to watch. If you love fast cars, sexy women and guys with big muscles you will like this movie. The cast bring a cool vibe. Lots of action and stunts. The story has its twists and turns and the emotion of the movie varied enough to keep my attention. Many of the bad reviews are judging this movie against a 'deep and meaningful criteria'. I enjoy deep and meaningful movies as well. However, I still enjoyed FF5.

Full on action from the very start to the finish. Some amazing stunts in this movie. Not a serious movie but if you want an action movie, then this one has action and lots of it. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are good, though it is hard to believe that Diesel would defeat Johnson ('The Rock') in a real fight.

Really enjoyed this, we watched it as a family, and the kids loved it too. Its one of those rare times when number 5 is better than the other sequels, usually movies get worse with each sequel not this, number 5 is as good maybe even better than number 1. Great effects, great car's&car chases, Just a really good action packed movie !!!

An amazing ride, and one that presses all the right buttons: speed, flash, sexy girls, explosions and fantabulous cars. The ending was rather trite, but the presence of the Rock saved this reviewer from dwelling too much on the aging actors! A rather fun way to spend a cold Sunday afternoon!

This series of fast cars, hot overly skinny models, and mega hot men are not disappointing, this movie made me want to get ALOT closer to the TV screen. There is the regular appearance of the good old faith ful dodge, there is a monster of a truck totally suited to Dwayne Johnson's character which appears to have put on extra bulk for the movie. There's such a range of fast cars, high-power action that you will want to watch the movie twice to make sure you haven't missed something. You can tell the director Justin Lin thinks about every single car, how it will best match each character and the story line. Vin Diesel is as hot and sexy as always there is sexual chemistry with someone he shouldn't get close to. Roll out Number 6!!!!! The stunts are worth it and so is the storyline. RENT ME RENT ME RENT ME
