Really worth watching. Great acting.
A brilliant movie that should be watched by all.
It gives a very raw insight into how the Bush government manipulated their way into Iraq as well as how the invasion affected the Iraqi citizens.
Sean Penn is absolutely superb in this role.
This was a very interesting movie, especially because it is a true story. It's amazing that a government can change the facts and fabricate Intel to cover itself. The two main actors - Naomi Watts & Sean Penn - did a fantastic job. Well done!!
Well made recreation of the exposure of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Comment/talk through available on DVD.
Fair Game. This is a frustrating movie, not because it’s not good but because it is a true story and the real villains get away; I guess if you’re the President of the USA, you can manipulate most situations to suit a particular agenda. It’s also frustrating to remember how so many governments (including Australia) supported President George W Bush in pursuit of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in Iraq. During his administration, the White House led by Vice President Chaney, was steeped in paranoia. It indulged in misinformation and deceit to the point of becoming delusional and the consequences are still being felt today. The film also documents the personal toll on Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts) a C.I.A. agent, who was publicly exposed by the American Government as pay back because her husband, a diplomat, refused to confirm what the government wanted him to do regardless of truth. The title is, of course, ironic.
As much I love the lead actors (Naomi Watts, Sean Penn) I got lost with the storyline. I found the story a little chaotic, difficult to follow...... Sure always love a true story, this one just tried to fit too much in to a short time. Only OK
Only in America. Good to see Naomi Watts in something with Sean Penn.
not much of a film and the sound track was soft then would go very loud (roaring) all through the film
This true story is one you have to certainly listen too. You need a basic interest in government organisation types of movies to stay intrigued. There is alot of information that is quickly thrown at the viewer but luckily for most of us you can follow it without having to understand everything they just said! Gets a little one tracked but I found it interesting- its not your usual CIA movie, it’s a story about what happened to one agent over the later part of her career.
If you have an interest in USA politics, and how it interacts with other government departments such as the CIA, then you should find this Movie interesting. If you are more into the 'Bourne Identity' type of CIA movies then you will probably be bored by this true story.
what can I say I did not finish watching it or should I say could nt
I've bought the book but haven't read it yet. Found the movie rivetting, exciting but also very disturbing, particularly when you realise we were all sold so many lies. Makes you realise there are many other untruths politicians have put out there to get what they wanted. The acting was very good and the story just amazing.
good movie very interesting
Could not sit through this past first 30 mins. Real pity as Sean Penn excellent.
Sadly, this movie in its delivery, its incorporation of solid condemning real footage, its pedigree and choice of Actors is buried Gold.
It has Sean Penn in a redeeming role (i remember a quote in Tropical Thunder but refer actually to is real life Off the Rails expereiences) and a lot of good casting choices Naomi Watts (only a little Saccharin) and in other actors that enable you to IDENTIFY THE REAL BAD GUYS. It is also sad that America has a long unglorious history of being led by the nose into a wars for some questionable ideological/realist cause but often for the benefit of some agenda now resurfacing in 2012. From the Spanish American Civil War, the Gulf of Tonkin and then the false WMD reason for the Iraqi Invasion portrayed in this movie. The most poignant quote (and I hope it was really said) is by Penn's Character at the end of the film in a lecture to students.
The fact is there were enough dissenting voices, enough evidence but the Coalition of the willing swallowed whatever lies it was sold.
Read the reviews on IMDB follow the links to the critics, dont believe "the Man" and God Bless the Zucker Brothers may they always Fly High!
Foud it quite interesting, I'm not into politics at all ut the fact that it is based on a true history, fascinates me.
I liked the movie, but I thank you have to be interested in american politics to get into it
My hubby and I loved this movie. As it was based on a true story it made it even more better. Sean Penn and Naomi Watts played the part so well. Very emotional movie too.
A good movie of a true story
Not too bad, took awile to get into.
2.5. A good story that needed to be told, very good cast, but a little too earnest and self righteous for me, and sorry, dull for me. I agree with Simon's review. I wanted it to be better.
Not a bad film but it just seemed to take too long to get started. Not as good as the Sean Penn and Nicole Kudman thriller The Interpreter.
Liked this film and now reading the book.
Excellent movie. Really enjoyed seeing how people in the American system were affected by the macho attitude by the administration at the time and how people's attitudes when change when their love ones are directly affected by unfair government policy.
An excellent portrayal of a real life story. Real life is more interesting than fiction
Interesting story and all the more so because it's true. Great acting too.
What a story ... I was intrigued from the beginning to the end ... Naomi Watts and Sean Penn are brilliant ... amazing to know what this woman and her family had to endure all because of lies by prominent people ...
One of the better movies I have seen this year, partly because it is based on a true event and partly because the acting by Naomi Watts and Sean Penn is superb.
The movie is a true spy thriller, set in the recent period between the Sept 11 bombing of the Twin Towers and the bombing of Iraq in 2003. If you liked those great British TV dramas that were turned into Hollywood movies ('Edge of Darkness' and 'State of Play') then you will love 'Fair Game'.
I agree with Simon's excellent review, this movie should have been DIRECTED much better. Lies, lies & more lies by the BUSH administration about going to war, ruining a loyal CIA servant's career, broken promises that cause the death of numerous people, BUT THE WHOLE "TRUE STORY" WAS SO IMPORTANT BUT TREAT LIKE A STROLL IN THE PARK by the Director & writer. Far more urgency and intrigue required. Always quality acting by Watts & Penn but overall a disappointing story that could have been fantastic. What a terrible waste of life over a lie, Bush admin will go down in history as war mongers.
Fantastic interesting poignant film. Certainly makes you think. But know what to expect... A full of action suspense thriller this is not. However as a realistic true story drama moving at a methodical pace it is excellent and leaves a lot to think about. Even more interesting is the inclusion of audio commentary by the people this is based upon. Lends a fair bit to the veracity of the tale.
OK movie - nothing outstanding, but an interesting flick and Naomi Watts is great.
Very good movie amazing to thing she went through this.
This is a pretty scathing indictment of the Bush administration's decision to go to war in Iraq and the subsequent outing of Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA agent after her husband Joe Wilson undermined the case for a uranium deal between Niger and Iraq in the New York Times. The acting by Naomi Watts and Sean Penn is excellent and the movie is brisk and suspenseful. Viewing this as a recently-minted Australian citizen who hasn't lived in the US for over 10 years, perhaps this played to me less like an extended traumatic memory (as it could be for some) and more like a peek into a bizarre alternate reality US that I never experienced firsthand. Over here, the media wasn't quite so complicit with the lies being put forward (or so we like to recall). But let's face it, those in power have ways of getting what they want. Fight the power!
For those who love politics, the movie would suit you well. Unfortunately for me, politics aren't what I like to watch in the movies. I gave up on this one after about 30 minutes... just not for me.
gave up after 15 minutes - we just couldn't get into it
I enjoyed this, an intriguing storyline, well acted (and I am not a huge fan of Naomi Watts), but it was a very good movie. Amazing to know this is based on a real story.
Excellent actors but story far too complex to enjoy. Followed the story well enough, but did not enjoy it. Didn't sit through to the end.
If you like political thrillers along the lines of State of Play, this should keep you happy. Based on the true Valerie Plame affair, this is a quality movie that features fine performances from Penn and Watts.
Slow start but very interesting true story.
good drama ,scary stuff as based on a true story could be Watts best work and sean penn is good as usual
Took a while to get into, not an easy watch at all but very interesting. Don't attempt to watch if you are tired at all. Hard to keep track of what is happening, who is who and who knows what. Would recommend though.
Movie and acting brilliant. Why did we invade Iraq ?. . . Hope John Howard views this DVD.
Took a while to get going. Needed to concentrate a bit to stay on the storyline - but an okay movie.
Naomi Watts was excellant in this movie.
Every American who believes in their Government needs to see this! Is the USA really fit to "police" the World if their Leaders are corrupt?
Excellent acting by Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. A very good movie.
Don't watch this when you are tired.
Didn't like this movie. Couldn't get into it.
I found this film to be quite boring, not just due to the lack of action. I appreciated a gripping thriller as much as anyone, but i am not really sure what genre this one belongs too. Obviously it is based on a true story, but this fact does not help it as 90% of viewers will know what happens in the end and instead of more interesting back room scenes in the Whitehouse involving Scooter Libby we are given tedious domestic scenes. While Penn and Watts are great actors, and Liman is usually a very interesting directors, the screenplay was sub par.
I thought it good because it was based on a true incident but the connection between Naomi and Sean wasn't working for me. I actually didn't care that their "family" was being torn apart.
Looooooong winded and by the time the conclusion hit home, you were relieved to have lasted the distance without falling asleep!!
I thought this was a good movie as I believe it was based on a true story, and is typical of human nature today, coverups, conspiracies and murders.
Disappointing with such a great cast. Just shows it takes more than good actors to make a good film.
I enjoyed this movie and thought it gave an interesting insight into what goes on in the corridors of power. Well acted and compelling viewing.
Great movie, great story line, loved it
This film reveals the misguided actions of the president and whithouse atacking Iraque and what happens to the principal revealers.
excellent movie, it opens your eyes to what goes on behind the scenes.
Ok if you like government movies
It was very slow moving... half way I had to read the blurb toknow what it was getting at.... However, I did get drawn into the movie..
It is also a must see story, as it is true happened.....
We all must know these things
I started watching this movie and thought it was a little slow but I was drawn into the story and found it very good.
Yawn! If you don't mind falling asleep and wasting your time, then this one is for you. Too much talk. Plot didn't develop until mid way or later. Character development took too much of the lead time. Cast did a great job of trying to convey the message but there were dry spots in their acting which was not convincing. Sean Penn has done better in other movies. The only plus is that the story was based on reality.
Excellent, really well done, if you know the back ground story it helps a lot but Sean Penn was excellent yet again
Slow moving at first this film gives some insight into the machinations of government and secret service agencies. We learn here that little is as it seems and the consequences of taking a simplistic view of matters and acting upon those views without weighing up all points of view, can be catastrophic. I'm glad that the outed secret agent and her family were able to have some semblance of normality and happiness in the long term.
Fair Game plot lack tension, through overuse of dialogue and not enough action. Based on a true story it showed how we are manipulated by Big Brother.
Excellent movie, good acting. Very informative and thought provocing
I was so looking forward to FAIR GAME, and was terribly disappointed. I love Sean Penn, he is an awesome actor and director. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood but this left me "unaffected". Such a shame.
Quite a good movie, Sean Penn is fabulous in this role, worth watching.
It was great to learn more about the REAL reasons the US went to war with Iraq, great movie.
I Think this movie was a bit slow and confusing
confusing to me as I am not really up on American politics. I tried to follow it on what I had read about 'Weapons of Mass destruction"
CIA operative Valerie Plame discovers her identity is allegedly leaked by the government as payback for an op-ed article her husband wrote criticizing the Bush administration. Plods along
Bit slow, but good story, but not really what one would call "A Thriller", worth a watch
An intriguing film, and a bit of an eye opener. Enjoyed it, as it was inspired by the real life experiences of a cia officer and her husband played by Naomi Watts and Sean Penn respectively.. This film shows how ruthless American's in Power can be when it's in their interests! Leaving people vulnerable and powerless, unless they are able to fight back!
So many movies based on real events start of well but never fulfil their promise but Fair Game has an incredible plot and also develops believable, multi-faceted characters. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn deliver convincing performances, as expected, but they've also got a good script to work with. No, it's not an action thriller with guns and espionage as some reviewers seem to have been expecting, this movie is based on real - shocking - events and is all the better for it.
A movie in two acts that are quite different but both infuriating. The first because it's so complex, confusing and all too real (and boring) politically with the lies behind the Iraq war. The second act becomes the personal story of a marriage and the strength to stand up to political bullies - suitably inspiring ... and infuriating given the actual events as cleverly portrayed with the real footage.
No guns, no fighting, no action. Just a whole lot of talking. It's meant to tbe the CIA. C'mon people. Needed action big time.
Barley watchable. Starts out fast and confusing and by the time you catch up it grinds to a halt. Take a pass...
I saw this at the movies with my free tickets from Quickflix. I recommend it for it is based on an incredible true story, and with sean penn involved, you know it goes in depth into values - loyalty, democracy, media, marriage, family, career, truth. In the beginning, you need to stay with the facts of CIA operations and is a bit of an effort, maybe a bit boring. But it has a defined change once the main exposure occurs. It's then emotional and a story about justice. A thoughtful film on many issues. I didn't know about this story at the time but its an eye opener. Naomi Watts
