A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, Fair game is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was exposed by a politically motivated press leak. As a covert officer in the CIA's Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie's husband, diplomat JOE WILSON (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a fire-storm of controversy.

Fair Game is as thrilling and passionate as its title suggests; which is to say, not very. Doug Liman’s latest tells the true story of CIA agent Valerie Plame, whose secret identity was allegedly revealed by the White House as a distraction from the War on Iraq (which her husband Ambassador Joe Wilson claimed was based on a lie). The tale seems too shocking to be true. There is material here for a masterpiece; a devastating document of modern history akin to All The President’s Men. So why then is Liman’s execution so … flippant?

Here is a film that takes place in the days following September 11, 2001, yet it fails to convey any sense of panic. It details the days leading up to the United States’ invasion of Iraq, yet it fails to capture a sense of urgency. It features a man and woman’s lone struggle against a smear-campaign forged by the White House and spread by the monolithic media machine, yet it just doesn’t feel like a big deal. The movie may be called Fair Game, but surely Liman could have injected a little bit of fury.

Given the White House’s penchant for burying bad buzz, there’s a chance you’re unfamiliar with - or have perhaps forgotten - this unsettling saga. Newshounds however will no doubt recall the trials and tribulations of Valerie Plame, as documented in her memoir Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House, and now brought to life by Liman and screenwriters Jez and John Butterworth. Plame (a graceful and poised Naomi Watts) had spent roughly fifteen years working for the CIA - establishing herself as one of their preeminent covert officers – before being abandoned entirely by the agency that she’d given so much. The trouble starts in 2002, when her diplomat husband Joe Wilson (an affably arrogant Sean Penn) is sent to Niger to see if they’re selling Iraq uranium. It is his professional opinion that they are not, but still the White House declares war on Iraq based on "British" intelligence to the contrary. When Wilson publishes an op-ed piece in the New York Times claiming President George W. Bush has invaded Iraq on a twisted version of the truth, the White House – specifically COS to the Vice President Scooter Libby (David Andrews) – responds by leaking Plame’s identity, destroying her career and endangering the lives of her entire family.

Great story, right? So what of the execution? Liman - perhaps inspired by his Bourne successor Paul Greengrass - sticks the camera right up into the faces of his actors, as if annoying the audience is equal to crafting genuine tension. I understand the reasons behind the handicam aesthetic, but honestly I’ve seen more believable neo-realism in The Office. Two characters may be having a seated conversation, and the camera will shake around for seemingly no reason at all, as if the DOP were trying to capture a fly with his lens. It has the equivalent effect of a character picking up a knife in a horror movie and it making “that knife sound”; at this point it’s a clichéd device that is best used now as a parody of itself.

Now, the film’s technical failings are not what ultimately ruin it, but rather, its emotional failings. When dealing with larger than life villains such as, oh, the former President of the United States and his entire cabinet, it’s important to be restrained. All The President’s Men - the foremost film on the Watergate scandal – knew to keep well enough away from depicting Richard Nixon and his lackeys. Even George Clooney wisely decided to use real footage of Joseph McCarthy in Good Night and Good Luck rather than hire an actor (who would have surely sweatily mugged for the camera). Although Bush, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice are saved from being portrayed onscreen by actors in Fair Game, the same cannot be said for Scooter Libby (who is portrayed like a dastardly Bond villain) and Press Secretary Ari Fleischer (who acts like a snivelling fool) among others. These cartoonish depictions do not add weight to the real issues, and certainly don’t honour the seriousness of the events being portrayed.

A subplot about an Iraqi family is all but abandoned (and again, not treated with appropriate weight), and any semblance of sincerity is almost ruined by a final reel lecture in which the film’s message is hammered home (in case you missed it earlier). I take no pleasure in criticising a movie like Fair Game, which is a story that needed to be told, and features enough good performances to be worth the price of admission. It’s just a shame that Liman and the Butterworths should fail the material.

2.5/5

A brilliant movie that should be watched by all. It gives a very raw insight into how the Bush government manipulated their way into Iraq as well as how the invasion affected the Iraqi citizens. Sean Penn is absolutely superb in this role.

This was a very interesting movie, especially because it is a true story. It's amazing that a government can change the facts and fabricate Intel to cover itself. The two main actors - Naomi Watts & Sean Penn - did a fantastic job. Well done!!

Fair Game. This is a frustrating movie, not because it’s not good but because it is a true story and the real villains get away; I guess if you’re the President of the USA, you can manipulate most situations to suit a particular agenda. It’s also frustrating to remember how so many governments (including Australia) supported President George W Bush in pursuit of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in Iraq. During his administration, the White House led by Vice President Chaney, was steeped in paranoia. It indulged in misinformation and deceit to the point of becoming delusional and the consequences are still being felt today. The film also documents the personal toll on Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts) a C.I.A. agent, who was publicly exposed by the American Government as pay back because her husband, a diplomat, refused to confirm what the government wanted him to do regardless of truth. The title is, of course, ironic.

This true story is one you have to certainly listen too. You need a basic interest in government organisation types of movies to stay intrigued. There is alot of information that is quickly thrown at the viewer but luckily for most of us you can follow it without having to understand everything they just said! Gets a little one tracked but I found it interesting- its not your usual CIA movie, it’s a story about what happened to one agent over the later part of her career.

If you have an interest in USA politics, and how it interacts with other government departments such as the CIA, then you should find this Movie interesting. If you are more into the 'Bourne Identity' type of CIA movies then you will probably be bored by this true story.

I've bought the book but haven't read it yet. Found the movie rivetting, exciting but also very disturbing, particularly when you realise we were all sold so many lies. Makes you realise there are many other untruths politicians have put out there to get what they wanted. The acting was very good and the story just amazing.

Sadly, this movie in its delivery, its incorporation of solid condemning real footage, its pedigree and choice of Actors is buried Gold. It has Sean Penn in a redeeming role (i remember a quote in Tropical Thunder but refer actually to is real life Off the Rails expereiences) and a lot of good casting choices Naomi Watts (only a little Saccharin) and in other actors that enable you to IDENTIFY THE REAL BAD GUYS. It is also sad that America has a long unglorious history of being led by the nose into a wars for some questionable ideological/realist cause but often for the benefit of some agenda now resurfacing in 2012. From the Spanish American Civil War, the Gulf of Tonkin and then the false WMD reason for the Iraqi Invasion portrayed in this movie. The most poignant quote (and I hope it was really said) is by Penn's Character at the end of the film in a lecture to students. The fact is there were enough dissenting voices, enough evidence but the Coalition of the willing swallowed whatever lies it was sold. Read the reviews on IMDB follow the links to the critics, dont believe "the Man" and God Bless the Zucker Brothers may they always Fly High!

One of the better movies I have seen this year, partly because it is based on a true event and partly because the acting by Naomi Watts and Sean Penn is superb. The movie is a true spy thriller, set in the recent period between the Sept 11 bombing of the Twin Towers and the bombing of Iraq in 2003. If you liked those great British TV dramas that were turned into Hollywood movies ('Edge of Darkness' and 'State of Play') then you will love 'Fair Game'.

I agree with Simon's excellent review, this movie should have been DIRECTED much better. Lies, lies & more lies by the BUSH administration about going to war, ruining a loyal CIA servant's career, broken promises that cause the death of numerous people, BUT THE WHOLE "TRUE STORY" WAS SO IMPORTANT BUT TREAT LIKE A STROLL IN THE PARK by the Director & writer. Far more urgency and intrigue required. Always quality acting by Watts & Penn but overall a disappointing story that could have been fantastic. What a terrible waste of life over a lie, Bush admin will go down in history as war mongers.

Fantastic interesting poignant film. Certainly makes you think. But know what to expect... A full of action suspense thriller this is not. However as a realistic true story drama moving at a methodical pace it is excellent and leaves a lot to think about. Even more interesting is the inclusion of audio commentary by the people this is based upon. Lends a fair bit to the veracity of the tale.

This is a pretty scathing indictment of the Bush administration's decision to go to war in Iraq and the subsequent outing of Valerie Plame Wilson as a CIA agent after her husband Joe Wilson undermined the case for a uranium deal between Niger and Iraq in the New York Times. The acting by Naomi Watts and Sean Penn is excellent and the movie is brisk and suspenseful. Viewing this as a recently-minted Australian citizen who hasn't lived in the US for over 10 years, perhaps this played to me less like an extended traumatic memory (as it could be for some) and more like a peek into a bizarre alternate reality US that I never experienced firsthand. Over here, the media wasn't quite so complicit with the lies being put forward (or so we like to recall). But let's face it, those in power have ways of getting what they want. Fight the power!

I found this film to be quite boring, not just due to the lack of action. I appreciated a gripping thriller as much as anyone, but i am not really sure what genre this one belongs too. Obviously it is based on a true story, but this fact does not help it as 90% of viewers will know what happens in the end and instead of more interesting back room scenes in the Whitehouse involving Scooter Libby we are given tedious domestic scenes. While Penn and Watts are great actors, and Liman is usually a very interesting directors, the screenplay was sub par.

Yawn! If you don't mind falling asleep and wasting your time, then this one is for you. Too much talk. Plot didn't develop until mid way or later. Character development took too much of the lead time. Cast did a great job of trying to convey the message but there were dry spots in their acting which was not convincing. Sean Penn has done better in other movies. The only plus is that the story was based on reality.

Slow moving at first this film gives some insight into the machinations of government and secret service agencies. We learn here that little is as it seems and the consequences of taking a simplistic view of matters and acting upon those views without weighing up all points of view, can be catastrophic. I'm glad that the outed secret agent and her family were able to have some semblance of normality and happiness in the long term.

So many movies based on real events start of well but never fulfil their promise but Fair Game has an incredible plot and also develops believable, multi-faceted characters. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn deliver convincing performances, as expected, but they've also got a good script to work with. No, it's not an action thriller with guns and espionage as some reviewers seem to have been expecting, this movie is based on real - shocking - events and is all the better for it.

A movie in two acts that are quite different but both infuriating. The first because it's so complex, confusing and all too real (and boring) politically with the lies behind the Iraq war. The second act becomes the personal story of a marriage and the strength to stand up to political bullies - suitably inspiring ... and infuriating given the actual events as cleverly portrayed with the real footage.

I saw this at the movies with my free tickets from Quickflix. I recommend it for it is based on an incredible true story, and with sean penn involved, you know it goes in depth into values - loyalty, democracy, media, marriage, family, career, truth. In the beginning, you need to stay with the facts of CIA operations and is a bit of an effort, maybe a bit boring. But it has a defined change once the main exposure occurs. It's then emotional and a story about justice. A thoughtful film on many issues. I didn't know about this story at the time but its an eye opener. Naomi Watts
