Giovanna, though still very young, has been married to her devoted husband David for 9 years. She divides her time between her job at the poultry factory, looking after the 2 children and baking cakes for the local café, bearing the weight of responsibility on her shoulders.

The strain on Giovanna is increased when David, in his kindness brings home a refined elderly gentleman who has lost his memory. In trying to help this man, Giovanna reluctantly spends more and more time with him, slowly uncovering clues to the mystery of his buried past: a number tattooed onto his forearm, his expertise in the art of patisserie and the name, Simone…

Increasingly irritated by her husband's softness, her fantasies of the ideal are projected onto the handsome, mysterious neighbour opposite whom she watches in the hope of adding a little excitement to her life.

A delightful, very gentle movie. The development of the characters and the story has a very light touch. Fortunately the soundtrack is in the original language (Italian) with the option of English subtitles.

A simple enough story, but nevertheless I found it life-changing. Great performances from the entire cast.

At times a little slow. but generally an enjoyable Italian film, capturing our dreams about what could be, if not in our current situation.

I really enjoyed this film. The characters , the way the plot unfolded and the location (was this originally a play?) all came together beautifully, even the conclusion - usually a difficult proposition these days - was handled well.

Quite sentimental and a few concurrent stories (including forbidden love )within the film made it interesting.

A heartfelt performance by Giovanna Mezzogiorno. She goes straight to my top 20 actors list. This is modern day muddled life in the city. Adopted strays can bring extra stress, but kindness can pay off. Remember: "You must demand to live in a better world... Don't be content to merely survive."

Set in modern Italy, with flashbacks to war-time Rome of 1942. Excellent acting. Touching love stories, on several levels. Excellent widescreen photgraphy, and tasteful and evocative surround sound. Enyoyable.
