The Evil Dead, director Sam Raimi's ( Spiderman , Darkman , A Simple Plan ) first feature film, is a true classic in every sense of the word. Originally released in 1982, The Evil Dead tells the tale of a group of friends who go to a cabin in the woods where they find an unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. They find the Necronomicon, The Book Of The Dead, and the taped translation of the text. Once the tape is played, the evil is released. One by one, the teens are turned into deadites (zombies). With only one remaining - Ash (Bruce Campbell) - it is up to him to survive the night and battle The Evil Dead.

great movie. this is the first in a great trilogy of films. when i saw this it was the first movie in a while to legitimately scare me. the way the movie plays out is amazing, the ending is great but some of the special effects arent so good but who honestly cares if something looks a bit too rubery. great movie, not so great acting, great horror, great everything. 10/10. if your a horror fan you must watch this movie!

Many awesome films were made in the 80's bu they were nothing like this known gem at the time. But unlike Elm street and Friday the 13th. This film hasnt aged very well and with a few flaws. 5 teens go to a cabin in the woods and accidently unleash demons when they play a recorder chanting a spell. They are possesed and picked off one by one as the possesed become savage killers. The actin is still strong with a young Bruce Campbell showing his classy acting skills even at his young age then. The others perform equally well. The direction bulids a decent sense of doom with a skillful tracking cam for an unseen demon and even when the pace slows it never becomes boring. The effects despite the age are still rather decent and if the black comedy wasnt there it might had not made it even thou the UK banned this as a nasty for a long time. My only gripes are the film has some glaring plotholes overlooked at the time and the stunt doubles are downright obvious esp. in Linda's scene. The film has a strange ending that was patched up in part 2. Most of the black humor is aimed at the demons so its not too hard to take but a scene involving a tree was done in poor taste. The film is good but it hasnt really aged well but still worth a look for horror fans.

The Evil Dead may have been shocking and hugely influential in 1981, but the film has not aged terribly well. Full of dodgy acting, dodgy effects and dodgy make-up (some of the make-up effects look more like halloween masks), although Sam Raimi does display some inventive camera work in his feature debut.

I had high hopes for this movie due to what friends and others had said about it. Maybe it's that I'm watching The Evil Dead a day too late but it isn't good as I was hoping.

I've known about 'The Evil Dead' for years but never made the effort to see it until now. The Evil Dead certainly has a creepy feel to it thanks to Sam Raimi's direction, cinematography, location, and the low-budget but gory effects. Some may laugh at the make-up and cheap effects, but for an extremely low budget film it kind of works. Its like they knew the make-up looked cheap, so they just added more blood to hide it. Ill now have to see what 'The Evil Dead 2' is like. I give this 3/5 zombie demons.

It doesn't get any better than Bruce Campbell and a bunch of evil dead dudes and dudettes savagely going at each other. Campy dialogue, dated effects. Absolutely brilliant. Complusive viewing for horror nuts.

A classic. Very dated, ridiculous special effects, look for the model house, the toy car, the drawn on veins etc... Hard to believe that this was banned in the UK when it was first released. Doesn't deserve the "R" rating. Worth a look, still very funny.

Most of the "special effects" are quite lame by today's standards. The audio is often unclear and distorted and the vision is usually part blurry and out of focus, but this is still a great blood, gore and horror flick. I look forward to the second installment.

All the evil dead movies are not scary at all. Evil Dead is a funny horror movie. Ash is the man to kill.

Forget the crook acting and plot - this is a low budget horror classic with scary visual and sound effects and lots of tension.

It was gory but ok, part 2 ( Evil Dead 2 : Dead by Dawn ) Was much better but silly and part 3 ( Evil Dead 3 : Army of Darkness) was more comedy then anything...

Saw this movie many years ago. I thought it was great back then but this time found it just average. Perhaps too much more gore and no real story.
