In a time of social change and unrest, a young working class woman (Maria Heiskanen) wins a camera in a lottery and decides to keep it - a decision that alters her entire life. Weighed down by poverty and an alcoholic womanising husband, the camera provides a secret outlet, that enables her to see the world through new eyes. As time goes by, her pictures narrate her story and give her the strength to enjoy the everyday of life.

Excellent performances by all, but a fairly average well-worn storyline of hardship, domestic abuse and misplaced hope. Would give 3.5 stars if I could

A fairly standard story of abusive husband ( a drunk) and long suffering faithful wife anchored by endless children - fell asleep a couple time while watching

Enjoyed this movie, although it has a VERY politically incorrect sub plot, ie. the wife should stick with the abusive relationship and turn down the chance for happiness because everything will turn around for the best in the end. Was this one sponsored by the Catholic Church? But that pickiness aside it is a good story.

The delicacy of hope is portrayed within a home environment of poverty and and violence. This true story is a reality check which shows the amazing strength of the human spirit. One to ponder on long after it finishes.

Nicely filmed period piece set in Sweden around WW1. There are some uplifting scenes, but mostly it's pretty depressing stuff around a hard life of daily toil, too many children and domestic violence.

Can't understand how this star system works, I would have thought it's averaged, but there are only 2 reviews for this and both give ot 4 stars. "at a glance " gives it 2.5 ......how is it so? Wonder what my 5 will do? Great little movie, has it all, good script good acting and good direction. It's amazing that these little gems pass us by without a peep of recognition from the heaving masses.

This movie is in some Northern European tongue, possible Scandinavian. It has English subtitles in very small script, impossible to read against the scenes behind them in the time available. There may be an edifying story behind it, but only for those who can understand the unidentified language. Borrow it at your peril.

I find most European films slow moving. But this one had a soul and told the story of a simple family in Sweeden at the turn of last century that strugles through life. Convention and love keeps mother from leaving her drunken and abusive husband. All ends well against all odds.
