Would you erase me?

This is the story of a guy, Joel, who discovers that his long-time girlfriend, Clementine, has undergone a psychiatrist's experimental procedure in which all of her memory of Joel is removed, after the couple has tried for years to get their relationship working fluidly. Frustrated by the idea of still being in love with a woman who doesn't remember their time together, Joel agrees to undergo the procedure as well, to erase his memories of Clementine.

The film, which takes place mostly within Joel's mind, follows his memories of Clementine backwards in time as each recent memory is replaced, and the procedure then goes on to the previous one, which is likewise seen, and then erased. Once the process starts, however, Joel realizes he doesn't really want to forget Clementine, so he starts smuggling her away into parts of his memory where she doesn't belong... which alters other things about his memories as well.

One of my favourite films of all time. My mother would be confused by the sequence but I find it fascinating and beautiful. It mixes quirky and interesting characters with a touch of Sci Fi and very genuine (not soppy) romance. It's also important to note that this is a very rare film in which Jim Carey does not play the role of Jim Carey. He is a genuine serious actor in this - all the performers do a fantastic job.

I watched this movie several times when it first came out in 2004 (you need to watch at least a couple of times). I loved it then and still love it. Jim Carrey is a brilliant dramatic actor and Kate Winslet is always enjoyable to watch. Makes you think that painful memories are worth keeping because you get to keep the good ones too. Great movie, and recommend it.

Good movie if you can stick it out to the end because you really do need to concentrate as the flashbacks from past to present to past etc can get a bit confusing. If you manage to get through it and understand it you will appreciate what the film is set out to achieve, otherwise you'll just think it's a boring piece of trash.

This is the typical "love me or hate me" type of movie. Me? Loved it! Existentialist, quirky, the time line goes back and forth so many times. In a way, most people have been there before (I guess)... you think about a loved one, give it another go, give up, think about it, try again... with the same person or another one who, you think, will fulfil your expectations this time 'round. At first I thought this was about the bitterness and misery of love (or life) going wrong, just to realise that it's more about giving it another chance! As they say at some stage... "It's gonna be gone soon, what do we do? Enjoy it!" Such is life. Btw, Jim Carrey with a soul.

Great film. They mess with chronology of events so that you experience confusion in the unravelling of the past. This is a tool to allow you to empathise with the characters. The theme is that the bitterness over petty arguments can undermine any chances of a fresh start. By wiping their memories, they allow each other to forget the bad but also lose the precious moments. They both realise too late, but give themselves a second chance. Because she meets him on the train, she tried saving him in her memory too, but this is implied.

Refreshingly different!. Jim Carrey & Kate Winselt are extremely watchable in this movie. Jim Carrey should do more serious roles. I enjoyed this movie and it held me until the end. Of course I've got some criticisms with the script where it could have been better, but nonetheless an interesting concept when it comes to erasing unwanted memories. Worth viewing.

I didn't see more than the first 20 minutes of this film. Slow, depressing and a little weird in its direction. Maybe ( having read other reviews) I missed out on something, but it just seemed too much like hard work. I don't mind films a little off-beat, but this one was just a bit too strange for me.

I found the characters in this film really unsympathetic. Both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet do a good job of bringing the characters to life, I just found them really unlikeable. As a result, the whole thing was a bit tiresome. I also found the premise rather tiresome. Would you erase someone if you could? Of course not! I did sit through to the end, but only because I didn't have any other DVDs waiting to be watched.

when we're going through painful experiences, we think we'd like to erase the memory of the pain forever, however we then realise that our life is made up of all the experiences we've ever had, and to erase the pain is to lose the memories of the people we've loved and lost.

Really liked this movie - took me a while to see it as wasn't sure if I would or not - knew it was kinda offbeat. But loved the originality and it was sad, happy and reminds you that love can be full of highs and lows. Not a Jim Carrey fan but thought he was great along with Kate winslet - who I am a fan of. One you must see and make up our own mind - as it isn't everyones cup of tea.

Fantastic film, brilliantly done, always good to watch when you can't sleep. I never get tired of this film and the actors have done an amazing job. Jim Carry is usually the funny guy but here he isn't, and he does an amazing job of being another type of character! Kate Winslet is the same, taking on a new character. You see these two act in this film and forget they're actors like movies are supposed to do to you.

A clever and appealing story of love found and lost. Venture into the head of Jim Carey (if you dare) as he fights to retain the memory of his love (Kate Winslet) while the well meaning but woefully unprofessional medics attempt to cleanse his brain of all memory of her.

Superb central idea. Fantastic character portrayals that really convey aspects of love, relationships and memories. My only qualms are with the disjointed nature of most of the film. Whilst this method of presentation certainly assists in illustrating the mindset of the characters and the procedure that is occurring I found it to have a bit of an emotional detaching effect. I found the ending to be very strong and emotionally engaging and it really left me wanting the middle section to have been just a little less "stream of consciousness". Best watched when you can give it the full attention that it deserves otherwise it'll become slightly overwhelming.

Can't stand Carey's comedy and generally feel good chick flicks are an effective lazy way to get the mood going. There's a dimension in the Red Dwarf series where everything is backwards and Kryton (or Lister depending if your thinking book or TV) says words to the effect of, things make more sense here, just think of world war 2, millions of people will come back to life Hitler will liberate Poland and then hop off back to Austria. An original love story starting at the bitter end as they rediscover the blissful beginning.

Could relate to Clementine wanting to wipe out her memory of a past love, but what he went through, to get her back, should b reason enough for all of us, to realise, that we r who we r and becuase of that person. So by trying to wipe them from your memory sounds good, I have found letting go is somewhat easier than wiping out total bits of your memory. Like, falling for the same person over n over again like groundhog day, it would be an eternal cycle that never ended and would have to be erased yet again.... much simpler to jus move on n less painful. Having said that, this was my 2nd viewing of this wonderful movie n it was great.

This is a wonderful exploration of memory and love; about how we remember those we love and what are the implications of removing those memories from our lives. Are we poorer for the loss? Jim Carrey plays it mostly straight and I have to confess I love him doing drama and hate hiom doing comedy. Kate Winslet is always divine and plays a difficult character so well that you love her as much as Carrey does. This is a tender and heart felt flick that does the kind of soft sci-fi I've come to like. What if we could do this thing (delete memories) what would that mean?

Fascinating, sometimes touching study of how our memories of those closest form and linger and what is suffered with their loss. Unusual dramatic role for Jim Carey. Interesting, dreamlike visual treatment and skillful direction. Dislocation of story and loops in time demand attention - much aided by Kate Winslet's colour coded hair !

I'll go with the minority on this one and agree with whoever said the film was annoying. The central idea had promise but the execution left wanting in a few departments. Not sure what is literate about this, maybe the book. In the final analysis this is just a romance dressed in pretential aspirations.

Rather a scrambled film with flashbacks adding to the confusion. Jim Carrey seems quieter than his usual manic self but "Clementine" tries to compensate for this. Not sure why the film was made.

Combine the buddy movie, the road trip movie and the mid-life crisis movie, roll in a big helping of sweetened pathos, beef it up with some fiesty females, a cad and a guy about to cash in his chips, and you end up with Sideways. Not the best film you'll ever see, but certainly one you'll always remember. It may even give you a new appreciation for Pinot Noir.

Hard NOT to watch. A Jim Carey movie where he is not making an arse of himself with stupid faces and noises. A little confusing the way the films skips through Carey's mind and back to reality, but somehow despite this, maintained my interest.

What a great idea for a love story - who hasn't wanted to wipe their memory of a former significant other? As the movie literally gets inside the mind of Joel during the procedure to wipe Clementine from his memory, we follow the path of their relationship. Both Carrey and Winslet are great in their roles, and the filming process is remarkable considering the effects were done 'in-camera' (ie without post-production digital manipulation).

Intriguing and of-beat but not hard to follow, the story of the development and disintegration (and re-development) of a quirky relationship is moving and convincingly well-acted by the two leads.

Interesting range of reviews - I rented this expecting something magnificent. It IS really clever, and the idea behind it quite wonderful, but this doesn't quite work. Do these people really seem in love to you? I don't think the writer and director quite brought this off - strangely unmoving. And I don't think that Mr Carrey is that good a serious actor.

The best thing I have seen Jim Carrey do, except when he is a child, when he really hams it up. Beautifully written, and very complex at times. It is possible to see the "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" similarities.

A great love story. Some people might like the 'give the relationship a fresh start' aspect of this movie, which is good. I personally liked the 'communication on another level which is just as real as physical life' aspect. Jim and Kate have a great time swapping their stereotypes. Medical technologists will love the portrayal of their profession.

This is a literate, heart felt movie that has screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's stamp all over it. The performances are fabulous, particularly Jim Carey. Carey is a better dramatic actor than either Adam Sandler or Robin Williams is at this point in their respective careers. The complexity of the plot is overstated by other reviewers- it is nowhere near as complex as say, Pulp Fiction or The Usual suspects but you'll always find someone who can't figure out plots without linear sign post and expositions... While the plot device is quirky the emotions are universal and true- listen to the words spoken by the characters near the end of the film- they resonate with a truth that is not seen often enough in modern western cinema.
