One of my favourite films of all time. My mother would be confused by the sequence but I find it fascinating and beautiful. It mixes quirky and interesting characters with a touch of Sci Fi and very genuine (not soppy) romance. It's also important to note that this is a very rare film in which Jim Carey does not play the role of Jim Carey. He is a genuine serious actor in this - all the performers do a fantastic job.
A bit strange but I really enjoyed it, no rolling on the floor laughing but laughs throughout.
Great plot and main actors were very good, nice scifi take on a romantic comedy.
was a very different movie, but i enjoyed it. its always interesting to see jim carrey in a non comedic role
Too confusing not worth recommending.
The plot was really good but at times the way they made the film was confusing. Worth a watch
Without a doubt the best movie I've ever seen. Everything about it was perfect.
One of the best movie's I've ever seen. Should have won Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress. Just Perfection!
The best movie I have ever seen.
Great script, fantastic concept, every actor is great, the editing is sublime!
The only Jim Carrey movie that I can stand because he isn't playing the same character he always plays.
Definitely a great watch for a film lover
Intriguing idea, engaging characters and very well acted. Clever plot, with only a couple of minor inconsistencies
Good movie nothing out standing
I watched this movie several times when it first came out in 2004 (you need to watch at least a couple of times). I loved it then and still love it. Jim Carrey is a brilliant dramatic actor and Kate Winslet is always enjoyable to watch. Makes you think that painful memories are worth keeping because you get to keep the good ones too. Great movie, and recommend it.
Good movie if you can stick it out to the end because you really do need to concentrate as the flashbacks from past to present to past etc can get a bit confusing. If you manage to get through it and understand it you will appreciate what the film is set out to achieve, otherwise you'll just think it's a boring piece of trash.
I got confused with how the time line goes back and forth. If everything was in time order, then I porbably would have made more sense out of the movie.
This movie was not a bad effort and the best performance from Jim Carey that I have seen. Well worth the effort to watch this movie. Stops and makes you think about what is really important in a relationship.
This one starts confused but it pays dividends to those who make the effort to watch it. (Because it is an effort, this is not the sort of film you "veg out" with). Well done to Jim and Kate.
This is the typical "love me or hate me" type of movie. Me? Loved it! Existentialist, quirky, the time line goes back and forth so many times. In a way, most people have been there before (I guess)... you think about a loved one, give it another go, give up, think about it, try again... with the same person or another one who, you think, will fulfil your expectations this time 'round.
At first I thought this was about the bitterness and misery of love (or life) going wrong, just to realise that it's more about giving it another chance! As they say at some stage... "It's gonna be gone soon, what do we do? Enjoy it!" Such is life.
Btw, Jim Carrey with a soul.
I am not at all a Jim Carrey fan but this one was recommended to me so I gave him a chance. I really enjoyed it. A very thought provoking story. Lots to think about.
O.K. but I don't like Jim Carrey!
possibly the worst movie I have seen. SO bad I eventually turned it off as I think I wasted my time watching it
Great film. They mess with chronology of events so that you experience confusion in the unravelling of the past. This is a tool to allow you to empathise with the characters. The theme is that the bitterness over petty arguments can undermine any chances of a fresh start. By wiping their memories, they allow each other to forget the bad but also lose the precious moments. They both realise too late, but give themselves a second chance. Because she meets him on the train, she tried saving him in her memory too, but this is implied.
This is a fantastic film about love and fate. Give it a go.
A brilliant film about love, regret and character. Well made, well-acted and well conceived, this film is all the more enriched by the individuality of its production. Quirky and a very independent arthouse film, I'd highly recommend it.
A good movie, but at the beginning, it doesn't make much sense. But please keep watching, all will be revielled
Jim let me down for the first time in this film. It was slow and boring...interesting concept that has a lot of potential for an exciting plot but they did nothing exciting with it. Only watched it to the end because I had nothing better to be doing...
The synopsis made it sound new and interesting. WRONG. I switched it off half way through. I went back to it a week later when I was on night shift and finished it off, I don't know why I bothered. Look, it was so trashy I don't want to talk about it anymore.
Refreshingly different!. Jim Carrey & Kate Winselt are extremely watchable in this movie. Jim Carrey should do more serious roles. I enjoyed this movie and it held me until the end. Of course I've got some criticisms with the script where it could have been better, but nonetheless an interesting concept when it comes to erasing unwanted memories. Worth viewing.
I didn't see more than the first 20 minutes of this film. Slow, depressing and a little weird in its direction. Maybe ( having read other reviews) I missed out on something, but it just seemed too much like hard work. I don't mind films a little off-beat, but this one was just a bit too strange for me.
I found the characters in this film really unsympathetic. Both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet do a good job of bringing the characters to life, I just found them really unlikeable. As a result, the whole thing was a bit tiresome. I also found the premise rather tiresome. Would you erase someone if you could? Of course not!
I did sit through to the end, but only because I didn't have any other DVDs waiting to be watched.
Enjoyed the complexity of the storyline, however at times found it difficult to follow
when we're going through painful experiences, we think we'd like to erase the memory of the pain forever, however we then realise that our life is made up of all the experiences we've ever had, and to erase the pain is to lose the memories of the people we've loved and lost.
This one really caught me by surprise. Those watching it with me had their attention wander because it starts to get a bit confusing. But even they were drawn deeper by its imaginative plot and emotionally deep performances. Stayed in my consciousness for days.
I like any film with Kate Winslet. But this one was weired in the extreme and left me analysing it for some time. There are a lot of parables to be found.
Suspend rationality for a while and believe love conquers all. A charming movie with a quirky and romantic story and eccentric characters. The lesson from the movie is that we value our memories.
Fabulous film, Charlie Kaufman is a fantasic writer. great performances, jum Carey isn't even that annoying in this
Really liked this movie - took me a while to see it as wasn't sure if I would or not - knew it was kinda offbeat. But loved the originality and it was sad, happy and reminds you that love can be full of highs and lows. Not a Jim Carrey fan but thought he was great along with Kate winslet - who I am a fan of. One you must see and make up our own mind - as it isn't everyones cup of tea.
Fantastic film, brilliantly done, always good to watch when you can't sleep. I never get tired of this film and the actors have done an amazing job.
Jim Carry is usually the funny guy but here he isn't, and he does an amazing job of being another type of character! Kate Winslet is the same, taking on a new character. You see these two act in this film and forget they're actors like movies are supposed to do to you.
A clever and appealing story of love found and lost. Venture into the head of Jim Carey (if you dare) as he fights to retain the memory of his love (Kate Winslet) while the well meaning but woefully unprofessional medics attempt to cleanse his brain of all memory of her.
I enjoyed this movie Jim Carey was great, interesting story line, whats meant to be is meant to be, you can't mess with the mind.
Original and interesting film about memory and the perfection of imperfect relationships.
Unusual film and thats why I enjoyed it.
Kate Winslett is fantastic..she is a great actress...whats his name Carey..he is hopeless..watch this and get bored..not my style..poor continuity..too many flashbacks...great ending saves this from a disaster..a 6/10 from me
A brilliant, thought-provoking film based on an original and intriguing concept. Jim Carey provides a fantastic performance. The score is a winner. Love it. Love it. Love it.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the movie that makes Casablanca the SECOND best love story ever told.
It's an incredible, insightful look at love, the mind, memory and human nature.
I doubt I will cry this long and hard at my own mother's funeral.
Genius.
Not bad, a bit all over the place but it gets you thinking. entertaining!!
one of the greatest arthouse movie i've ever seen. the rollercoaster of a range of emotions is truly immersive and relatable. extremely clever and original concept.
Very hard to follow - really needed a guided commentary. Even at the end was not sure I liked the ending as we did not seem to have really got there satisfactorily.
I just finished watching this film and I have to say I recommend putting this one on your queue. I personally found the characters believable (both leads are great) and really liked everything about this film, I believe it was shot really well also which is always a plus. Most of all I liked the originality of it. See what you think, I'm sure if you don't love it you will at least enjoy it.
Fantastic. My fav. Very sad then very happy. Just the way a romantic film should be.
Really enjoyed it. Its a movie you need to pay attention to, but well worth it. Fascinating concept and well executed. Highly recommend.
If Your not a fan of Jim Carey dont worry.
Neither am I however in this movie he is
great.the story is basic erase someones
memory however the movie is outstanding.perfect editing, great cast
to me its a five star success
This was such an original script how could you not like it. Very touching how relationships truly change us. Beautifully acted by Jim Carey & Kate
This was such an original script how could you not like it. Very touching how relationships truly change us. Beautifully acted by Jim Carey & Kate Winslet
Superb central idea.
Fantastic character portrayals that really convey aspects of love, relationships and memories.
My only qualms are with the disjointed nature of most of the film. Whilst this method of presentation certainly assists in illustrating the mindset of the characters and the procedure that is occurring I found it to have a bit of an emotional detaching effect. I found the ending to be very strong and emotionally engaging and it really left me wanting the middle section to have been just a little less "stream of consciousness".
Best watched when you can give it the full attention that it deserves otherwise it'll become slightly overwhelming.
One of my favourite films of all time. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are incredible.
Not our kind of movie, its a psychological drama "without rhyme or reason." However, Kate Winslett was once again outstanding and is the one recommendation I freely give for this movie!
Really less than special too me; interesting story line, but slow and pretentious at times.
A brilliant film - one of my favourites of all time. I have watched it twice and loved the acting, script and cinematography.
An intriguing but off-beat movie. I don't normally like Jim Carrey, but have to say he is excellent in this. Kate Winslet is fantastic (love that hair!).
Can't stand Carey's comedy and generally feel good chick flicks are an effective lazy way to get the mood going. There's a dimension in the Red Dwarf series where everything is backwards and Kryton (or Lister depending if your thinking book or TV) says words to the effect of, things make more sense here, just think of world war 2, millions of people will come back to life Hitler will liberate Poland and then hop off back to Austria. An original love story starting at the bitter end as they rediscover the blissful beginning.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a beautiful movie! A lot on the bizzarre side and filled with unpredictable moments, refreshing in a day when most movies are see-through! The ending even got a few tears out....
Excellent, fresh and innovative story. More entertaining than traditional, 'boring' love stories
Inventive and interesting movie about memory and relationships. A trifle too long and repetitive but nevertheless challenging. Nice to see Jim Carrey in role where he doesn't need to mug to the camera.
very clever idea, generally well executed.
I sat down to watch this and very quickly worked out that I was going to have to think too much through this. I gave up and did not see this through. Maybe worth while if you think you need some mental gymnastics.
A kind of mix between "Sliding Doors", "Being John Malkovich" and "Memento" all of which I really enjoyed. A great exploration of how we experience our world.
Very quirky & left of centre.
Perhaps I was too tired to appreciate it but didn't get it and found it slow moving and boring, guess it is personal taste...couldn't even finish watcing it.
Whilst it got off to quite a slow start, about half way through it began to engage my attention. The fact that what they were doing was totally unethical was tempered by the fact the characters began to realise this. Not one of the best movies I have ever seen, but worth a look.
A fascinating "What if?" storyline.
Great acting [even by Jim Carrey!] and great direction and filming.
High expectation , huge dissapointment .Not a lot of fun , difficult to follow and if viewed late at night , yawn ...
I found this pretentious & self indulgent & downright tedious. And confusing. Giving it 2 hands is generous, but it was not just bad (1 hand), maybe it should get 1 1/2.
It was a little hard for my husband to watch. Actually it was a little hard for me to watch but I watched it twice. I kept thinking about it afterward as to whether I liked it or not. I think I did
New! and Brilliant! says the reviews. so boring it's hit a New! low in boredom. i never even saw how it ended.
Really great idea. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are great, but so are all the supporting cast. Loved it.
Could relate to Clementine wanting to wipe out her memory of a past love, but what he went through, to get her back, should b reason enough for all of us, to realise, that we r who we r and becuase of that person. So by trying to wipe them from your memory sounds good, I have found letting go is somewhat easier than wiping out total bits of your memory. Like, falling for the same person over n over again like groundhog day, it would be an eternal cycle that never ended and would have to be erased yet again.... much simpler to jus move on n less painful. Having said that, this was my 2nd viewing of this wonderful movie n it was great.
Too hard to follow, gave up it was like hard work
I was expecting Total Recall featuring Jim Carrey, but this was far more poignant and moving than that. Great performances from the cast (including Kirsten Dunst, who i haven't always been impressed with). Very absorbing overall.
Not that good all over the place.
This movie showcases the other actor in Jim Carey, not the manic comic but the somewhat more sensitive actor. A great performance also from Kate Winslett makes this somewhat quirky movie a winner, although its romantic content and entangled storyline is way too much for anyone who enjoys action movies.
Quirky and brilliant, full of notable quotables and slightly discomforting truths. Jim Carrey is a hell of a lot funnier when he's playing it straight.
This is a wonderful exploration of memory and love; about how we remember those we love and what are the implications of removing those memories from our lives. Are we poorer for the loss?
Jim Carrey plays it mostly straight and I have to confess I love him doing drama and hate hiom doing comedy. Kate Winslet is always divine and plays a difficult character so well that you love her as much as Carrey does.
This is a tender and heart felt flick that does the kind of soft sci-fi I've come to like. What if we could do this thing (delete memories) what would that mean?
I love this movie!! Don't worry if you usually don't like Jim Carrey, he's nothing like the annoying characters he usually plays.
This is a lot like Being John Malkovich, in that most of the action takes place inside a characters head, so be prepared for a little kookiness.
Definately worth watching, especially for the twist!
Loved it! It pulled me right in.
Not my type of movie. Too wishywashy and all over the place.
there is a couple of minutes near the end of this movie that are just the best.
Such a great concept and beautifully realised. So good to see Jim in depressed mode he is a far better actor when playing is straight in my opinion. Kate Winslet is wonderful.
i personally cannot understand why people don't like jim carey but this is not a 'jim carey' film and he is amazing in this film. it breaks my heart- he breaks my heart. the story deviates from the norm, which should really occur much more often in western film- this is done beautifully.
Shades of 'Vanilla Sky'. Interesting. Wouldn't pay to see at movies but good DVD...
Not for everybody, strange left field storyline disjointed at first but eventually makes some sort of sense. Not our cup of tea. Enjoyed Carey; unfortunately he is an under-rated typecast actor.
really enjoyed this one. Has a nice messages.
As with any movie that claims to be drama but stars a comedic actor, I was doubtful when I put this into my DVD player... but WOW what an amazing journey! A brillian movie, awesome script, fantastic plot and superb acting by all involved. You will love this ride!
What on earth are 2 half decent actors (Jim Carey and Kate Winslet) doing in this excruciatingly tedious waste of film tape?
Dull and boring would be a vast understatement. Extremely disappointing execution of plot as I thought the concept sounded quite intriguing. Seriously - it may cure insomnia - I could not stay awake.
Fascinating, sometimes touching study of how our memories of those closest form and linger and what is suffered with their loss. Unusual dramatic role for Jim Carey. Interesting, dreamlike visual treatment and skillful direction. Dislocation of story and loops in time demand attention - much aided by Kate Winslet's colour coded hair !
Loved it!! it's so sweet and sad and so real at the same time.. jim carrey does a different type of role and so does kate winslet.. it's like they've switched personality~~ XD
bottom line: relationships will always be hard and need to work on them, and you will at some time of your life want to wish you ever met them, but when you think about it, you really do love them and you may regret that decision/thought.
Jim Carey should make more of these movies. They show how deep beyond all the other shallow roles he has played he's a great actor with a lot of potential.
This movie suprised me, really suprised me.
Apparently you'll either love it or hate it. Watch it and find out which...
I movie that I can watch time and time again and different elements to appreciate in it.
Beautiful movie; even the special effects were moving!
I must admit I don't like Jim Carey much so I guess it's not a surprise that I didn't like this movie much.
A bit confusing to start with but the acting by Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey is fantastic.
I didn't finish watching it, I was bored.
Great acting, great story, great film.
Incredible. Blew me to the ground.
I'll go with the minority on this one and agree with whoever said the film was annoying. The central idea had promise but the execution left wanting in a few departments. Not sure what is literate about this, maybe the book. In the final analysis this is just a romance dressed in pretential aspirations.
Compelling acting. Fast moving and intriguing movie until the end. Felt the ending could have been better, but overall was a good film.
really good, great story although a bit confusing at times. great actors- jim carey is not playing his usual self!
Rather a scrambled film with flashbacks adding to the confusion. Jim Carrey seems quieter than his usual manic self but "Clementine" tries to compensate for this. Not sure why the film was made.
Interesting concept but could take it or leave it.
really enjoyed it...clever, visually stimulating...
main storyline excellent - secondary storylines a little bit unnecessary (and a bit preachy).
Overall - great movie...!!
Combine the buddy movie, the road trip movie and the mid-life crisis movie, roll in a big helping of sweetened pathos, beef it up with some fiesty females, a cad and a guy about to cash in his chips, and you end up with Sideways.
Not the best film you'll ever see, but certainly one you'll always remember.
It may even give you a new appreciation for Pinot Noir.
Excellent performances especially Jim Carrey in an unusual role. Strangely uplifting.
Brilliant film, very real performances brings credibilty to such an incredible story. Loved it!
Great idea, and technically a wonderfully made movie. Great performances too. However, never really warm to the characters until the last third.
A very original film - with vague tones of Memento - with some original cinematography! The performances from Kate Winslet and Jim Carey (the best that I've seen from him!) are really good.
An interesting concept and an enjoyable movie
Hard NOT to watch. A Jim Carey movie where he is not making an arse of himself with stupid faces and noises. A little confusing the way the films skips through Carey's mind and back to reality, but somehow despite this, maintained my interest.
Interesting story, but very confusing...
Interesting concept, but what a bizarre movie!!
Kate Winslet shines in this film. I love her crazy hair too! Jim Carey was also surprising, he is in fact a good actor.
great and timeless watch. something for everyone to relate to and learn from.
What a great idea for a love story - who hasn't wanted to wipe their memory of a former significant other? As the movie literally gets inside the mind of Joel during the procedure to wipe Clementine from his memory, we follow the path of their relationship. Both Carrey and Winslet are great in their roles, and the filming process is remarkable considering the effects were done 'in-camera' (ie without post-production digital manipulation).
An engaging and somewhat sad movie where most (all?) threads of the many flashbacks are actually resolved at the end, and with likeable main characters.
Interesting viewing and good acting - well worth sitting through to the end.
Intriguing and of-beat but not hard to follow, the story of the development and disintegration (and re-development) of a quirky relationship is moving and convincingly well-acted by the two leads.
Quite odd and not particularly interesting. Not a bad performance from Jim Carrey for a change.
Interesting range of reviews - I rented this expecting something magnificent. It IS really clever, and the idea behind it quite wonderful, but this doesn't quite work. Do these people really seem in love to you? I don't think the writer and director quite brought this off - strangely unmoving. And I don't think that Mr Carrey is that good a serious actor.
The best thing I have seen Jim Carrey do, except when he is a child, when he really hams it up. Beautifully written, and very complex at times. It is possible to see the "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" similarities.
Incoherent, disjointed and dreamy - a tale of not knowing what you have until it's gone, or is taken from you.
Althought the actors did a good job, I found the movie difficult to understand with all the flashbacks and cutting and pasting.
Quirkly but with a great love theme.
Once you get your head around what is going on, it's not a bad movie. It was good to see Jim Carey in this sort of role.
The best movie of 2004. The best Jim Carry Movie. Don't miss
Complicated and slow moving and Carrey is not comic here. If you take the time to follow the plot you wont turn off. One of the best this year.
A great love story. Some people might like the 'give the relationship a fresh start' aspect of this movie, which is good. I personally liked the 'communication on another level which is just as real as physical life' aspect. Jim and Kate have a great time swapping their stereotypes. Medical technologists will love the portrayal of their profession.
A very original plot, well acted and cleverly playing emotions that we so often strive to confine to the depths of our minds.
A bit messy, but the ideas are interesting
Briliantly conceived concept of "mind erasing" - similar idea to Guy Pearce's "Memento". A complicated story that demands your full attention. A wonderful love story too.
I can't believe this was rated so highly - interesting concept but annoying to watch.
A very interesting and good film, impressive acting from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet.
Very quirky film but totally rivetting. Suspend belief and go with it - the acting also is top notch.
I thought this was fantastic, Jim Carrey proves he can actually act and the story was wonderful. don't try too hard to work it out, just watch it and enjoy.
What a brilliant armchair ride into the human psyche. Wow! Jim Carrey and Kate Winslow carried the film along superbly.
It may be somewhat slow to some - but look underneath and you will see a lot of meaning and relate to the movie.
I wasn't sure what to expect and at the start I thought Oh OH! but what a wonderfully original albeit offbeat story. The acting was superb on all counts and what an excellent script.
Enjoyed the weird story and acting of Kate and Jim who both play the tormented souls well. Surprised by other bigish names there also.
A disappointing and boring movie. It has no redeeming features despite a pretty good cast. A good film for insomniacs.
Brilliant concept and script, charmingly delivered. Kate Winslett is a joy. Even if you're not a Jim Carrey fan, you'll enjoy it.
Fantastic movie! Fascinating concepts, and explored in an interesting way.
Interesting also to see the actors play against type - Jim playing the 'everyman' more straight character, with Kate playing the 'out there' person. Both were brilliant.
Strangest movie I have ever seen!
This is a literate, heart felt movie that has screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's stamp all over it. The performances are fabulous, particularly Jim Carey. Carey is a better dramatic actor than either Adam Sandler or Robin Williams is at this point in their respective careers.
The complexity of the plot is overstated by other reviewers- it is nowhere near as complex as say, Pulp Fiction or The Usual suspects but you'll always find someone who can't figure out plots without linear sign post and expositions... While the plot device is quirky the emotions are universal and true- listen to the words spoken by the characters near the end of the film- they resonate with a truth that is not seen often enough in modern western cinema.
Quirky and Jim Carey who I don't normally like is excellent
The plot is so convoluted as to be incomprhensible
Not much chop very annoying
A fantastic and original film. Kate Winslet is quirky and fantastic. Jim Carey is very believable.
