Based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel, tells the story of a boy, James Graham, whose privileged life is upturned by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, December 8, 1941. For young Jim Graham (Christian Bale), the imaginative son of a British factory owner, this means school and play carry on as normal. But Jim’s innocence is soon shattered, and he’s thrown into a terrifying ordeal that starts with separation from his parents, and forces him to quickly mature from dependent child to resourceful survivor. After a short time free but utterly alone, Jim seeks help from Basie (John Malkovich), a scheming American. He is eventually captured and taken to Soo Chow confinement camp, next to a captured Chinese airfield. Amidst the sickness and food shortages in the camp, Jim attempts to reconstruct his former life, all the while bringing spirit and dignity to those around him. Jim balances the overwhelming collection of emotions to allow us to see him survive, grow, and change from innocent child to wizened adolescent survivor.

Great movie. Only downside is it is a little bit drawn out. But a well told story and great acting.

Wonderful movie of the human spirit prevailing in awful situations. Great performance by the young Christian Bale and especially John Malkovich. Maybe a bit long, but worth watching

I can't believe its been 17 years since I first saw this movie! Seeing it again now as an adult, I think its one of the better movies i've ever seen. Some people think its a bit drawn out, but I thought it was captivating from start to finish. Do check out the young Christian Bale's performance too. You'll quickly see why he was well awarded for it; absolutely brilliant.

I have read the book of this movie several times, so when I was about to watch it I was fearful that the wonder of the book would be destroyed in the translation to film. Happily, I really enjoyed the movie version. Christian Bale is outstanding, the story is cleverly told, and as for Spielberg's direction....what more could one want?

a great film with a brilliant performance by a young Christian Bale. Possibly a little drawn out but well worth watching for a mature audience

Disappointing. Slow. Story could have been told better. Long and drawn-out. Probably a good story ruined by Spielberg. Great performance from Christian Bale.

Ultimately this film doesn't work, the story is pretty stupid. Christian Bale however gives one of the best performances i've ever seen from a child actor. Movie also benefits from having two top actors in Malkovich and Joe Pantoliano.

Terrific movie I have watched a few times and always enjoy. All the characters are wonderful and it portrays so well the panic and terror of the Japanese occupation and how the human spirit can survive terrible privations.
