From Chen Kaige, the director of Farewell, My Concubine comes The Emperor And The Assassin - a visually stunning epic exploring the devastating price one country pays for peace and one man pays for power. Ying Zheng, the King of Qin, has one driving ambition: to unify China's seven kingdoms into one magnificent empire. Impressed by her lover's convictions, Lady Zhao (Gong Li) helps Ying Zheng concoct an assassination plot that would justify the conquest of Qin's most powerful enemy. When Ying Zheng's peaceful mission explodes into a brutal holocaust, a disillusioned Lady Zhao is forced to question her loyalty as well as her lover's destiny.

I liked this but realise this won't appeal to all. A great story of power and its corrupting influence. If you like foreign films, particularly of the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon ilk, it is worth watching.

this is not as polished a movie as the director's later productions and though well acted and produced at times faltered and lost its pace amongst the spectacle.

and a half. A couple of people complained about the length of this film (there are a few that weigh in at 3 hours) ... I didn't find sitting through only 2 1/2 hours here was a problem and the story held my interest well. The battle scenes and those filmed in the palaces were really very good.

Beautiful, moving movie about the life of three people from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Not to be missed if you are looking for intrigue, romance or history (it is based on ancient Chinese history).
