Handsome, opportunistic, immoral. Traveling salesman Elmer Gantry (Lancaster) is all this and more. So when he stumbles into a revival meeting and discovers that he can hustle money in a tent-show as easily as in a saloon, Gantry converts to evangelism. Joining forces with Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons), he delivers demon-bashing oratories that bring him fame and fortune. But when an old flame (Shirley Jones) re-appears, Gantry is forced to confront demons of a more worldly order -- long-buried secrets that will make his saintly life a veritable Hell on Earth.

Although this was a very old movie I enjoyed it very much, One thing I like about older movies there is no profanity etc. I believe the 3.5 stars is a suitable rating

Very powerful performance by Burt Lancaster on a controversial topic. Is religion real or is it just a 'put on'? This is a question that only the viewer can answer for themselves. Compelling to watch to the end.

Impossible to take your eyes of Lancaster in this film - a great actor playing a great actor in an interesting take on religion in society.

It's easy to see why Burt Lancaster won the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of salesman-turned-evangelist Elmer Gantry. Lancaster's roots in the circus make him ideally suited to play the charismatic showman. With the current resurgence of religious fervour this story has lost none of its power and remains as relevant today as it was in the early '60s. Shirley Jones also won the best supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal as Gantry's ex lover.
