Ed Wood (1994)

A very entertaining a quirky movie. Tim burton at his best. Martin Landau was exceptional, as was Johnny, but then he always is :) maybe went for a bit long but was entertaining. Yes there definitely Willy Wonker type smilies. Had to laugh when SJP said they thought she had a horse face.

This is a highly entertaining film about 'The worst director of all time.' It's well worth the watch for the brilliant performance by Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi.

Quite brilliant. Cooky without being over the top. Depp is just amazing and I do not know how he does it. The nerdy smile reminded me of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character from years later. Martin Landau was incredible as Bela Lugosi. I felt like I really wanted Ed to have just ONE big movie - that he could have lived on that his whole life. A lot more entertaining and enjoyable than I was expecting. Nice performance from the always lovely Sarah Jessica Parker.

This film is fantastic! As a Tim Burton fan I was impressed at the different feel this film had compared to most other Burton features. The filming technique felt quite close to Orson Welles style, which was clever, as he was Wood's icon. Johnny Depp and Bill Murray rarely fail to impress and they were both brilliant here. Landau as Lugosi was a hauntingly good casting choice and Parker, although not the finest of actors, was well placed. The film itself kept me enthralled from start to finish, regardless of how non-biographical the story was. In essence, Burton almost sells Wood to the audience and you are left yearning to know more about him and even watch his bazaar films! I have seen Plan 9, not knowing anything about the creator, and found it so hilariously ridiculous that it almost seemed brilliant. To recapitulate, all that is left to say is this is a wonderful, interesting and enchanting film that I am now going to recommend to everyone!

Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi is just A i loved this movie so much

Only for the committed Depp-fan: this might well be THE WORST film Johnny Depp has ever appeared in. I am still trying to decide if Tim Burton deliberately made this film bad in a bizarre homage to the disasterous real life exploits of the title character- director Ed Wood. The concept clearly had remarkable potential considering all the connections that Ed Wood had in real life to famous people- unfortunately just being in proximity to fame and brilliance does not necessarily maketh a great cinematic experience- and all the SJP's, Depps, Arquette's and Bill Murrays in the world could not make up for this rambling story line- which clearly suffers from trying to stick to the truth. Tim Burton is at his best in the world of make-believe, and while I admire the brave and bold decision to go for black and white film, and the sense of the extraordinary brought to a fascinating story based on real life, all the Nosferatuesque shadowiness and Johnny Deppness in the world cannot overcome the fact that this script is clunky. Bill Murray provides some comic relief as a minor character who's camp exterior and love of glitter cannot quench a burning desire for a gender-reassignment (which the end titles tell us never came to fruition in real life for the person he plays). Watch it for Sarah Jessica Parker's character saying, "I don't really have a horse face- do I?"

Very funny & sad at the same time. Good spooky design of opening & credits. Johnny Depp in an earlier role, so unlike Captain Jack Sparrow!

Being a vintage movie fan I thought I would enjoy this - it was so slow and so boring I fell asleep half way through...

This movie about bad movies really felt like on big bad movie. That's all I can say!

Johnny Depp is fantastic in everything, in my eyes at least! SJP Im not a fan of, and she seems to only be able to act in one particular way! Maybe I have just watched too much sex in the city!! Was feeling a little bored, but glad I pushed thru and saw it to the end.

I'm surprised I gave this a 3. It was only because of the references to Plan 9 (one of my fav movies) I think.

I loved the querkiness of this movie...really different from the run of the mill...but this is what you expect from Tim Burton, is it not?. Interesting story, great performances, humour and poignant moments, however it was sorely in need of editing - too long and meandering - should have been shorter, snappier and more focussed to be a classic. Fans of Munsters and Addams family will enjoy!

This movie treads an inevitable fine line very well. A movie about the ultimate B-movie maker has got to inhibit some of the "so bad it's good" that has made Wood a household name today. Yet at the same time the movie needs to be good, up to a high standard that Depp and Burton hold to. There is a creepy atmosphere that builds throughout this film perfectly and in a far more restrained manner than Burton normally allows. It's entertaining, has some first rate production design and has a little bit of heart.

Not worth the postage it cost to send it to me.

Perserverance, cheesy smiles, faithfulness: all can be learned from Ed Wood!

Anything Tim Burton does is excellent and as it usually involved Johnny Depp (as this movie of course does) , you just know you are in for a fun ride every time! I knew little about Ed Wood, apart from the fact that he was responsible for some pretty awful movies, notably 'Plan 9 from Outer Space', but seeing as Burton was at the helm, I knew Wood HAD to be interesting and he is, to put it mildly! Depp, as always has loads of fun with the character and seeing him in an angora sweater, bra and blonde wig is worth watching for alone! Martin Landau (from the original tv series of 'Mission Impossible') also does a great turn as Bela Lugosi. The whole crew must have had a ball making this, as is made evident in the Extras. Makes you want to get hold of 'Plan 9' (available on Quickflix!!!) just to check it out against the Burton version. The scene where Lugosi wrestles the octupus is hilarious and what makes it moreso, is the fact that it actually happened! Tim Burton didn't make this stuff up! Fabulous!

Ian didn't go much on Ed Wood I thought it was okay and Johnny's cast as Ed did a great job for the era and showed how much this man loved making movies even if they were not all good, but it depends on taste.

Well Ed Wood was different, but exact to it's era, I'm sure some would have a great appreciation for what this man would do to make his movies.

Very amusing! Great to see fine actors doing unusual things. Johnny Depp was refreshing and got the style of speech and patter of the times down pat!
