Actors: Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, Denis O'hare, Douglas Henshall, Mark Strong

A Roman epic adventure, based on the classic novel of the same name, set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, The Eagle (The Eagle of the Ninth).

It has been a longtime since I read Rosemary Sutcliff's Eagle of the Ninth, however I'm pretty sure though she didnt potray the Picts as resembling African Tribesman. Not sure where this director got his idea of the early Brits from. A lot of the people acting the part of the early Scots were in fact Irish. (Big difference!) But then again the people acting the part of the Romans were American (with horrid accents). Very odd movie, but I will have to read the book again. I don't know why I watch these movies as I'm always horribly annoyed by the lack of historical accuracy, but I had great hopes for this film.

If you can get past the American Accents (But then, I didn't hear any Latin accents either) this was surprisingly good. Excellent set piece battles, you cared about the main characters, and you could see the effort that went into re-creating Roman Britain.

An underrated gem. This movie received weak reviews when it came out in 2010. I chose not to see it. What a mistake. This is a superior sword and sandal movie with terrific acting, locations and direction. I watched it twice. The extras are fabulous also. The "cut" chariot race is terrific, Unbelievably, this film rates only 39% on rottentomatoes.com . I'll never understand why some films sink at the box office and some very poor films are blockbusters. I should have seen this on the BIG screen!!!!!
