Nominated for an Academy Award, this adventure, set during the settling of the North American colonies, centers on Gilbert and Lana Martin (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert), a young couple homesteading in New York's Mohawk Valley. Driven by repeated Indian attacks into a nearby fort, they watch helplessly as their farm is laid to waste. But when a well-to-do spinster hires Gilbert to work as a field hand and gives the Martins a place to stay, the couple begins again. And although life is never easy with Gilbert's involvement in battles with Indian tribes and British soldiers, challenges from the weather and more the two realize that there is something magical about life in the Mohawk Valley.
