Director: Jeremy Brock
Actors: Rupert Grint, Julie Walters, Laura Linney

The Graduate meets Harold And Maude in this rights of passage comedy from the writer of Her Majesty Mrs Brown. With yet another dreary school holiday coming around for the shy and downtrodden Ben (Rupert Grint), things couldn't get much worse. 17 years of living in an absurdly conservative and traditional household with his highly strung and overbearing mother (Laura Linney) and quiet, mild mannered vicar father have taken their toll on young Ben. However, Ben's world is turned upside down when he is employed by an eccentric retired actress, Evie (Julie Walters) during the school holidays. Evie's unconventional and often downright bizarre behaviour challenges Ben's beliefs and forces him to confront the very idea of who he wants to be. Julie Walters is a knockout in this role as a faded star with an acid tongue and Rupert Grint relishes the opportunity to play along side her in this warm tale of friendship, old-age and coming of age.

Sorry but this one didn't thrill us at all. The characters were too weird to believe and the script was also unbelievable. The boy was so timid and gullible and the woman so overbearing and manipulating.

Sweet, entertaining tale of a young 17 1/2 year old boy, controlled by by an overbearing religious mother and withdrawn father, and how he finds himself through his work with a retired, eccentric and tragic actress. Very well acted, especially by Julie Walters. Rupert Grint plays the the role of the teenage boy well, showing his talent will last longer than the Harry Potter series of films. A very entertaining film.

Really enjoyed this one - a simple story about lessons kids can learn from someone outside their own family that helps them to grow up and see the world through different eyes.

With this cast, I was hoping for more than was delivered. The performances are good, but somehow the story fails to hit the right notes and the subplots aren't defined as well as they could have been. Overall, this movie just didn't gel.

Love a quirky movie? This one's for you then. Julie Walters' performance as the ageing bohemian, eccentric is done to perfection. She frustrates to the point of wanting to choke her.....and then saddens you and you just want to hug her. Rupert is well cast as her pliable, naive young friend. Entertaining and moving.

Unutterably boring, trivial waste of time. Julie Walters gabbles her words so quickly I hadn't the foggiest idea what she was on about, and Rupert's just about as exciting as trying to raise the dead.

Fabulous warm fuzzy feeling after seeing this one - smiling from ear to ear. Julie Walters was absolutely fantastic - playing a grandma! Would you beleive Ronald Weasley swore, grew up and showed what an actor he could be, I won't tell you all. Chuck in the neurotic mother (she makes me look good). Lots of colouful characters, the story is really about a teenager with a brain finding his future and rebelling. Awesone! Loved it!

Julie Water's is fantastic but the movie itself is a little slow. Rupert Grint does carry off the downtrodden son well but I think the story line and Laura Linney (who normally is superb in most parts) struggles with the english accent. She is such an integral part to the story line that it is a pity that she just doesn't manage to carry off the strict, uptight english mother role convincingly

Julie Waters has been a long-time favourite and she didn't disappoint in this quirky 'rite of passage' - Ben's story. (This is the first time I've seen Rupert Grint without Harry & Hermoine and it took some adjusting!). A delightful tale, sensitively told - the odd (literally!) sprinkle of British humour made it sparkle!
