The best word to describe Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive - based on James Sallis’ book of the same name - is ‘cool’. Perhaps it’s the only word necessary. But, I probably can’t get away with a one-word review, so allow me to expand on my feelings. Ryan Gosling, starring as an LA stunt-man and freelance getaway driver, is really, really cool. When he falls in love with an ex-con’s wife (Carey Mulligan), he lowers his normally very-high standards, and agrees to assist her hubby (Oscar Isaac) in a heist that will help pay off the thugs who are threatening their family. But the heist goes wrong (as they oft do), and everyone’s life – including that of the driver’s mechanic (Bryan Cranston) and his mob-connected bosses (Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman) - ends up on the line. Refn’s direction is so...

Refn’s direction is so stylish and slick and Hollywood chic, but never vapid. The persistent, pulsating, synth-pop soundtrack is electrifying. The cinematography is gorgeous, and so uniquely and strangely composed. For a film that pays tributes to film noirs of the 40s, gritty crime dramas of the 70s, and neon-lit action films of the 80s, Drive is surprisingly novel, featuring moments that are so unexpected, and in some cases, never before attempted.

Drive is an issue of Teen Beat magazine come to life, with hot pink lipstick smeared over the top, and with smatterings of some of the most extreme violence you’ve ever seen thrown in for good measure. Precisely paced, but with plenty of fantastic action set-pieces, Drive is too much fun. Seriously, it’s cool.

4.5/5

Yes...slowwww to start , with characters pausing often, saying little, with little emotion ect. rather odd. It does develop with interest, but the over-the-top violence in the second half, is off-putting. Average only.

Very slow to start with. Last half hour is kinda interesting if you make it that far. Some of the violence is just too much. It's well acted and produced, but boring to watch.

Main character starts out being incredibly quiet, but quickly reverts to violence. The extreme violence is unnecessary and completely unbelievable and so is the response of the female character.

Very disappointing, waste of time. We didn't even bother watching it till the end. Wooden acting from Gosling, silly plot and poor characterisation. The cheap font used for the opening credits was the clue to the cheap movie to follow.

What I loved the most about this movie is the music. It has this great almost cheesy 80s soundtrack. Within 10 minutes you wish you were in the seedy parts of LA driving a hotted up car. The story is basically one of revenge with a bit of cool car action in. The movie doesn't have much dialog and the characters rely instead on a lot of 'looks'. This seems a bit unbelievable when the main characters are suppose to be falling in love. Drive is not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Best film I've seen in a long time. Mulligan and Gosling are both mesmerising throughout. Amazing cinematography and the soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to the gritty, intense drama filled love story. Don't be mistaken, its a love story, but its a dark, violent, fulfilling one, unlike so many of Hollywoods love formulas.

This slow paced movie didn't really go anywhere and ended a little unexpectedly. Quiet spoken Ryan showed almost no emotion throughout the movie, but maybe that was part of his character. Either way, it didn't demonstrate if he had any acting ability or not (first movie I have seen with him in it). I didn't enjoy this movie and I had expected more from it.

Please don't watch it expecting Fast and Furious 7 ( or whatever they're up to now ). This movie has won Cannes Film Festival Best Director for a good reason. It is hard to compare it to something, in a way 'it's like this or that'. It reminded me of Pulp Fiction, or maybe even Mad Max for some reason ( there are only a couple of car chases in it, tho, and even those aren't your typical ones ). I thought it was intense ( and not because of the gore either ), and yes, slow. I also liked the soundtrack and had to get a few tracks by Chromatics, Kavinsky and of course Cliff Martinez. They are "slow", too. So with only one kiss in the whole movie I think ( no sex ! ), a couple of ( American ) muscle cars briefly appearing and people getting their heads destroyed in the process why wouldn't you want to watch it ?

So there was one stunt scene for a movie and one night heist and a day one. Very slow and not much of a story, felt like a movie from the early 80's including the music. Wasn't whatvi expected from reading the synopsis. Wouldn't watch or recommend.

If you think this movie is boring or of poor quality, I imagine that you life is shallow and full of superficial chatter because you clearly cannot handle real depth and character. The car scenes are not the feature of his movie, more of a bonus and the bloody killings are a legitimate reason to switch off. However, if a combination of mind-burn, cars, mobs and killings sounds like your thing, then do watch. And keep in mind, "You say it best, when you say nothing at all."

I found this movie a bit confusing, especially the 80s graphics and music, and the switch to ultra-violence was surprising. However, in the extras it was described as a western, which makes a lot more sense than a film noir as suggested above. Some great set pieces and it features Ryan Gosling.

It's an unusual movie, which gets it an extra star. But there's not much of a story and it's very violent. The Driver and his love interest hardly say a word to each other and any romance they have is purely imaginary. Indeed a number of dream sequences in the film merely add confusion.

Good suspenseful mobster-themed flick. it does have some intensely violent scenes, very unexpectedly, but maybe that's in line with the forced reserve of the main character. A good story definitely worth a look if you don't mind the disturbing gore.

Slow to get started - once the gratuitous violence kicked in - gained my interest a little more. However found it all a bit dull, strange, an almost complete waste of time - though not quite. I was disappointed at the lack of 'driving' - had an assumption there would be a bit more of it given the title - judging by some of the reviews here maybe it is a bit more of a 'thinkers' movie and I just didn't get it. It was OK.

The Scorpion and the Frog One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river. The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn't see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back. Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream. "Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called the scorpion across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?" "Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly. "Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!" Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!" "This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!" "Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog. "Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!" So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current. Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs. "You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?" The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back. "I could not help myself. It is my nature." Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

The reviewer who said this was one of the best films of 2011 was spot on. A moody, slow burn classic with some truly innovative flourishes, particularly in terms of lighting, structure and the fabulous soundtrack. Few actors can rival Gosling in the "vunerable but complicated" stakes and he is outstanding here as a man of few words but many secrets. Intelligent, expertly crafted cinema at its finest.

This movie robbed me of a potentially great evening. Slow plot ... reminded me of Stanley Kubrick's "2001 A Space Odyssey" in that it was also filled with meaningless time fillers. This story could have been told in 30mins by removing the awkward pauses and dialogue free shots that seemed to go no where. The plot was extremely predictable, the use of violence was in most cases pointless and excessive and the acting was less than convincing. The one saving grace is that it makes a great conversation point at parties ... "Watched this awful movie last week ..." In summary ... consider your alternatives carefully before committing to this movie ... the washing up would have been more enjoyable ... and I still have to do it after wasting my evening on this movie.

How can so many well-known names be in such a woefully bad movie? I actually checked the production date thinking it was a re-release of a 'before they were famous'flick. Terrrible, awful soundtrack and opening credit graphics started the warning bells ringing, and it went downhill from there. Ryan Gosling appears less the strong silent loner type and more the released into the community on too much medication type, if I hadn't seen him in Blue Valentine I would think this guy couldn't act his way out of the proverbial wet paper bag. Bad dialogue (not that there's a hell of a lot of it) with the occasional splash (literally) of gore to semi-wake you from your Drive induced coma. Nobody comes out of this well, and the film should have skipped theatres, the new release shelf and gone straight to the $2 bin at Crazy Clarks.

I was left a little disappointed by the film as a whole, as on paper it looked like a decent flick. The main character would be better played by anyone other than Ryan Gosling - Rick Moranis could have done a better job. His silent, broody acting makes him appear slightly simple and out of his depth for such a role. When he cracks a smile in the film it made me burst out laughing at how poor a job he was doing of it. He just didn't make it work. I can appreciate the director wanted to create a cool and stylish film, but he'll have to try a bit harder next time - that's 100 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

I still don't understand what all the fuss was about for this movie, I couldn't even get through half of it. It seemed like most of the scenes went on for too long with little to no talking which resulted in making the mood of the film very boring and slow, it also seemed like the plot lack thought and any type of purpose. This movie won't be for everyone. But for me it had an impact - it's really a Western set in modern day LA, showing the dirty side of a flashy city. Yes there's some confronting violence, so keep away if you're not into that. But what violence there is throughout the movie doesn't run for more than a couple of minutes. It's light-on in dialogue, which I found refreshing for a change - I like to think for myself what characters are feeling. I found Gosling very convincing in a role that portrays someone who is living in his own sort of dream state (as a Hollywood stuntman and getaway driver), disconnected from people. The soundtrack really is AWESOME and the movie wouldn't be as great without it, if you like electro beats and synths with some 80s influences you'll love it - the composer is Cliff Martinez, who did Traffic, Contagion and the Solaris remake amongst other things. If you're expecting, and only interested in, plenty of action with lots of high speed car chases and corny dialogue, don't rent this. If you want something a bit different, then get it.

It was an okay movie, If your bored and have nothing else to watch. It had a slow storyline and the writers for some reason made the movie without a lot of dialogue, which made the movie even more boring. The soundtrack and acting made me think the movie was made in the early 80's. Ryan Gosling was a very poor choice for the main staring role, He isn't sexy and doesn't stand out in anyway as an actor, He belongs as a movie extra.

Drive is a very good film. It's not quite the masterpiece that many people made it out to be, but the direction is incredible and you really get inside the character's mind. Recommended stuff. Go see it.

Gosling is a very fine actor - as he demonstrated in "Lars and the Real Girl" and recently in the "Ides of March". But: all Ryan Gosling fans beware - this movie is extremely violent, often gratuitously so, and will not appeal to everyone. As for Gosling, not his finest hour. I preferred him in "Fracture" although Anthony Hopkins easily steals the show there. Now that's a real film noir! Fans of Christina Hendricks will also be disappointed.... ;-)

I would not reccomend this movie at all. The beginning is very slow and there seems to be a lot of graphic violence to make up for a slack storyline. I'd give this one a miss!

Can't agree with Simon Miraudo or Brian T. This was a turkey thanks to Ryan GOSLING. An instant cure for insomnia!! Mr. GOSLING might be a good lookin dude, but, he can't act to save himself. Wooden, emotionally stitled come to mind. The script does not explore the part time jobs of GOSLING in any sufficient detail. Getaway car driver, stock car racer. That would have been an interesting script. Instead we focus on the cheating wife of an ex con and boring, boring GOSLING. Even Bryan Cranston's many talents are badly wasted here. Due yourself a favour (With all due respect to Molly Meldrum(May he make a full recovery), give this a wide berth. Thank god I got free tickets. Would have been screaming for a refund. And Simon, I do agree with 95% of your reviews.

Another word for Drive is "Think!!" It's a movie without a lot of dialogue with so much deeper meaning in few words. Don't expect an action movie, it's a character study: "think about it". Each character has a story but we're never told the story - we see the end result of their ordinary lives and their life choices. It's got the formula of classic Western "Shane" with a loner walking into the lives of a family and doing what a man's gotta do. And the doing is a rebirth of Steve McQueen (cool) in Bullitt and with lots of ultra-violence in the mould of (the cool) Reservior Dogs. At the end of the movie, you've gotta think "Scorpion" and "White Knight" in the dark underbelly of LA's small time criminal world - is the "Driver" playing the role of his life in his version of the Hollywood dream or is there a deeper side of his character longing or searching the streets for the getaway and escape of real love!!! Ryan Gosling is a cold fire on the slow burn - the heat infuses "Cool"!!! Go see it on the biggest screen and sit up front in the driver's seat with your feet flat to the floor.
