You know it's a pretty average movie when Eddie Murphy turns in the top performance (second only to the donkey in shrek). Poor script, lots of oversinging and very formulaic plot. some of the lyrics are truly cringeworthy ... "what rhymes with tree?"

At 130 min, it was way too long. The pace was good at the start, with great singing; but when they started singing dialogue, out of the blue, it felt awkward. I love the era, the music and the artists, but could not watch this one to the end...

Well for a musical I loved this, big, bright and beautiful, great storyline and girls performing throughout. Hudson and Murphy worked well together on this show

I really wanted to like this movie, but just didn't. Way too long, songs went on and on (sometimes they were just lines from the script that the actors were just putting in a sing-song way. Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce were excellent that in itself was not enough to make me rate it more than one star.

A little choppy and uneven, but still a good film, with some great performances. It can't seem to decide if it's a movie about music or a musical, with the film veering off a conventional narrative and into a self-conscious musical number rather abruptly, a fair way into the story. It's kind of odd and off-putting.

I didn't think the movie lived up to all the hype. The singing started off great but got annoying towards the end. Movie seemed to drag on and didn't have any memorable bits.

An enjoyable movie - special kudos to the hair/makeup/costume designers. Weird in that the story seemed a condensed history on Mowtown, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, rise of Disco

Thought it started strongly and I enjoyed the first half hour but then it quickly became tedious when the dialogue was sung as well as the stage numbers.

Boring beyond words - only worth watching for costumes (pretty slick) and guess-who-they're-immitating game (Jackson Five, BB King, James Brown, Supremes, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, etc). Obvious promotional vehicle for Beyonce, no idea why Hudson got an oscar for that role; but Eddie Murphy playing something completely out of character really deserved his.

Started out well first 10 minutes then it bored me to tears.I wasted a rental on this rubbish.Gave it 2 stars be because of costumes and make up.Now I know who directed it (Bill Condon). This explains why it is a flop.

Started out ok, but cheesy and jerkily written - eg Jessica Hudson wanders outside from the recording studio into the middle of the Detroit riots and announces 'I don't feel well'. Next scene - she's pregnant. Terrible!

A beautifully rendered musical with an astounding debut performance by Jennifer Hudson. Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy are impressive as usual and Beyonce Knowles is the truest surprise of the bunch. Watch it - you'll be hard pressed not to enjoy it.

basically it's a chick flick.. no car chases nobody's getting shot at not a bomb blast or a raunchy riibald scene in the lot of it but the script holds and though the character interaction to a musical comedy theme at times is a bit weird ...it's worth a look

For a start this is a musical! so expect singing and a somewhat shallow storyline. You need to love music. It containing singing dialogue which was done very well, powerful lyrics and fantastic voices. I got a bit lost in the history of motown, who was who etc as I did not know enough about it. Although long it is pleasant viewing great beat, again great strong lyrics better than HAIRSPRAY ( which I would give three stars). PS turn up the sound system!! good stuff

The first 20 minutes or so were ok but we were so bored by the singing in the end. A movie about singers with designated songs does not also have to have the majority of the script sang as well. Lightweight and a script with no substance.
