Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious LA loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a sceptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?

To describe Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell as “kind-of scary” is like describing Bruno as “kind-of funny” or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as “kind-of stupid.” Some movies are just made for hyperbolic reviews and Raimi’s latest is one of them: it’s a rollicking rollercoaster ride through Hades that is certain to make teenage boys heave popcorn in the air in gore-gasmic delight; teenage girls will shriek both in repulsion and glee; and damn near everyone else will whoop and laugh and holler as if they’ve wandered into a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Drag Me To Hell is a gin-u-wine endorphin generator that might be a wildcard contender for best film of the year. Too hyperbolic? Well, wait until you see the movie.

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is a sweet, timid loan officer who is just the kind of horror heroine that is naive enough to wind up in some really awful situation. Her prickly pear arrives in the form of an elderly woman named Sylvia Ganush (Lorna Raver); a one-eyed Romanian who’s about to have her home repossessed. Christine doesn’t want to reject the old lady’s third loan application, but she also needs to prove to her boss that she can make the ‘tough decisions’ and earn that Assistant Manager position at the bank. So she sends grandma packing. I cannot stress enough how much she will regret this decision.

What Ganush lacks in financial savvy she makes up for in gypsy curses, and she dooms Christine to suffer three days of supernatural torment before eventually being dragged to ... well, hell. Without giving too much away, Christine endures some of the grossest, funniest, most horrifying physical and emotional torture since Cheryl unwisely decided to stroll through the woods in The Evil Dead. Seriously, Lohman is an incredible sport for putting up with everything Raimi throws at her. With the help of her charmingly concerned boyfriend (Justin Long) and a surprisingly expensive medium (Dileep Rao), Christine attempts to call off the demons. The thing is, these demons don’t take too kindly to reasoning. I’ll stop before I ruin any more of the film. And I haven’t even gotten to the goat yet!

Drag Me To Hell is Raimi’s first horror film since he completed his Evil Dead trilogy in 1993, and I didn’t realise how much I had missed him. The film was co-written by Sam with his brother Ivan before he abandoned the genre to work on the Spiderman trilogy (maybe you’ve heard of it). In the interim, thrill seekers had to resort to whatever Saw sequel or J-horror remake would be playing in cinemas for their fortnightly jumpscare. During that time we forgot that scary movies weren’t simply comprised of creepy children, grizzly torture sequences and female nudity (although they can sometimes be very important ingredients). Raimi exercises both Hitchcockian restraint and Argentian-excess to create one of the most effective horror films of the decade. It’s like the greatest fairground haunted house in the world.

As scary as the film is, it is still downright hilarious in all the right (and sometimes very wrong) ways. I fear that the more casual horror fans won’t quite get the joke; the joke of course being that the entire film is actually One. Big. Joke. Drag Me To Hell is both an old-school celebration of classic eighties horror flicks and a pitch-perfect spoof of modern-day terror-tropes, from its Danny Elfman-aping score to its Ghostbusters-esque spectres. It would all be laughable if it still weren’t so damn frightening. Raimi teases the audience like a master seducer (note one sequence featuring a pesky fly flirting with Lohman’s upper lip). Each moment is almost unwatchable for its intensity, but you’d be crazy to look away. His scattershot Spiderman 3 felt like it came from a director unsure of himself. I think it's safe to say Raimi has his mojo back.

I mentioned previously that most audiences might not appreciate the tongue-in-cheek silliness of Drag Me To Hell. They might be expecting an Unborn or a Grudge or something terrible like that, and misunderstand Raimi’s goofy project as absurd. I implore audiences to give the film a chance and understand that Raimi and co are laughing with you. This is a spoof movie of the highest degree; one which stands up as a solid scary movie as well. Drag Me To Hell is a genre-buster; one of the funniest and most satisfying films of 2009, and quite simply a perfect horror film. It also has possibly the greatest final-reel shock since Carrie. I dare you to walk out without a smile on your face. A twisted, demented smile.

5/5

A horror movie with witchcraft, magick and supernatural themes. Makes you wonder about that sort of stuff; are there words that can cast spells? entities that terrorise people? and is there even a hell? Apart from that it's the only horror movie I've seen in a number of years that has made me jump in a. You'll be surprised!

I keep saying why do I bother after watching one of these so-called horror flicks. This has it's share of shock and schlock, but it's just a bore. Oh and thanks a lot Clay.

LAMEST HORROR FILM ever. In the bottom ten anyway... When I saw the previews I thought it looked awesome but it is definatly not so. It's more laughable than frightening; evil spirit of a goat??? Uhhhhh ohhhhhh! Seriously, don't waste your money.

Aspiring young banker is cursed by a gypsy woman. Pretty predictable horror story that offers no surprises. Suspense is lacking and as usual with these things is special effect driven. 2.5 stars

So bad that I didn't bother watching more than a half hour of this. It was like one of those 'spoof' scary movies but it was supposed to be serious. Utter crap.

Horrible in every sense of the word. there were more funny scenes than horror scenes. It's unbearably stupid and I got so bored and frustrated with how pointless the movie was that I had to fast forward most of it. Would not recommend it to my worst enemy

I rented this movie based on the reviews of other members and was very disappointed. This movie was absurd. I was really hoping for a good scary horror but it was more like a comedy....and not in a good way.

This is a truly terrible movie. It is totally predictable from the word go, laughably cheesy and tacky in every way. It is not a horror film, it’s a horrible film. Can I please get back the hour and a half of my life I wasted on it?

Just love these twisted movies and then the actor/resses that play so well...Hats off to the Director and to Alison and Lorna both parts to me played very well. Kept me on my seat wondering and the "end" just that extra "twist" one wasn't expecting. WELL WORTH WATCHING!! Me I'd watch it again...

First ten minutes were sick enough- Don't know where the comedy was! Didn't rate a smile, let alone a laugh. I obviously chose it out of the "comedy" section, but didn't notice that it was supposed to be "comedy/horror'. Didn't consider it worth persevering after ten minutes.

Loved the shorts for this and read some great reviews, but as a horror buff this was really disappointing. Not the worst around but the plot was stupid and other than a couple of interesting twists and a couple of scary moments, most of the moving was pretty dull. Only just squeezed in for 2 stars!

this is one of the worst horrer movies iv ever seen, it has close to zero redeaming featurs. first of all it co stars that faggot from the mac vs pc adds who plays a character not unlike that doucebag we all hate in the adverts. it doesent have any other well knowm acters non does it feature any newly rising stars. this movie is full of really cheap scares, none of it is geniuny scary its just 'jump out of your seat shock scares' something flashes infront of the screen and a loud noise plays so you jolt from the shock. i have a particulary voilent and painfull reaction to these kind of scares so watching this movie was very stressfull. these kind of scares are very cheap, this kind of pointless crap is all over youtube, and youtube does it better. (worse) all the characters in this move are unlikeable, i hate them all. an ending that i would love is where they all die and i would want that to happen 10 minutes after the movie starts. if you want to spend an hour an a half getting irritated by the characters, uninteresting story while hugging your blanket to handle the shock scares then rent this.

It's okay but can see why critics have been under whelmed. For much of the film I found myself willing it to get better. Did not see the twist coming and that found me forgiving the not quite right effects.

Better than I expected - if you enjoy horror then this is an entertaining movie. Some cliches (of course), some references to past horror movies, some bad acting - but hey - isn't that what we expect and love in horror movies?

Best parody of the horror genre since the Scream movies. It's loud, has lots of CGI special effects, it's gory without the blood and there's lots of bodily fluids. The old lady is hillarious. It's impossible not to find it hillarious.

Good to see Sam Raimi getting away from the slowly dying franchise of Spiderman and back to his horror roots. It's a bit corny but if you dont take it too seriously you'll enjoy it. If you didnt like Evil Dead II stay away from this one.

When Sam Raimi left horror after the 3rd Evil dead film the fans were afraid like Peter Jackson he would never return but Raimi has come back with an excellant horror film in the same vein as Evil dead. A lady denies an elderly lady a loan and evicts her and the lady puts a curse on her. She must find a way to stop the curse within 3 days or die. Excellant acting with smooth direction plus awesome jump scenes and a sequance that has to be seen to be belived that brings Evil dead to mind. My only gipe is the ending is a bit of a let down and both endings should had been including but its an excellant film and well worth seeing.

I normally like Justin Long, so why he signed up for this is beyond me. Horrible. Painful. Admittedly the old lady was frightening but more so just really disgusting. Especially with the phlegm and the biting. Ah yuck.

Shockingly bad! Started off with great promise, then became predictably nonsensical and the cg animation was too over the top! A combination of Jim Carey in THE MASK and SCARY MOVIE, it lead nowhere and the ending was soooooo lame as! You could see that comin from a mile away! Try harder Sam.... Maybe comedies would suit you better!

The worst thing about so many contemporary horror films is: 1) they are unoriginal; and 2) they take themselves way too seriously. Thankfully, Sam Raimi has returned to his horror roots with Drag Me To Hell. I can honestly that this is the best film you will ever see featuring a talking goat and a man possessed by a demon vomiting a dead cat out of his mouth. Way more entertaining than any of the horror remakes/sequels that are released on what seems like a daily basis.

Yes - 5 stars! This was one of 2009's most fun, entertaining flicks. In a year of bloated. disappointing blockbusters, this little movie delivers EXACTLY what it promises. It's well made, well acted with enough scares, laughs and knowing nudges at '80s horror to satisy any fan of the genre (which includes you, or you wouldn't be reading this). Get it.

What could have been a masterpiece of Horror (The first 30 minutes) then falls in a very predictable flick where comedy (The exorcism scene) close to Evil Dead 2 blends with Comics mood (Graveyard scene). I'd really like to see Raimi and Tarantino collaborating on a flick, that would be awesome really. Drag Me To Hell is like reading those old cool Horror comix, it reminds me of the Creepshow series and Evil Dead (Obviously). It all looks like a million $ of course and Raimi knows how to make a film, that's for sure. Having said that it's not a flick that will scare you, the VFX are kind of funny (aka Evil Dead 2) and the story is too square as the characters are very cardboardy unfortunately. Some the actors are heaps bad (The clairvoyant), the dialogues are Uhm! Still wondering ..perhaps that's what Raimi wanted. The script has been partly written by him so.. Anyway still I enjoyed and will remember it for what it is, the return of Sam Raimi to the Horror genre.
