As the Great War rages across Europe, discord is sown even into the serene Yorkshire countryside. Simmering tensions behind the gates of Downton Abbey are beginning to come to a boil as the men and women of Downton do their part on both the front lines and the home front. What's more, the brutality and intensity of war seem to inflame more familiar passions - love, loss, blackmail , and betrayal - leaving family and staff alike to struggle in an ever-changing world. Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern return to lead the stellar cast of familiar faces and Maria Doyle Kennedy, Iain Glen and Zoe Boyle arrive to add fresh intrigue to the second season of delicious Emmy Award-winning drama.

Season 2 jumps 2 years into the future and I wonder if the writers thought that bringing scenes from the front-line trenches would add more tension (after the preposterous melodrama of the 'death of Turkish diplomat' in season 1). Personally. I would have liked a season showing the tension as the war drums approached and maybe a bit more of the politics behind it (as hinted in Season 1 with the workers' rallies). However, I am enjoying it and it is beautifully filmed.

The predictability of season one continues here in the revisit of Upstairs, Downstairs (in uniform). Still too many cliches For modern (as in 20th century) historical period drama Foyle's War leaves this for dead but DA2 is engaging enough in a simple way. It doesn't ask too much of the viewers.

BBC TV at its best. Sit back and go back in time to a society in transition. Brilliant.
