After escaping from near death Donnie Darko, a delusional high-school student, is visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past, and deadly predictions for the future.

Donnie Darko is a disturbed adolescent from a semi-functional, upper-middle class family, gifted with a sharp intellect and vivid imagination but he is also a bit weird. Donnie's off his medication, and when his bedroom is obliterated by a falling airliner engine, he becomes increasingly delusional and convinced the world will end in 28 days. Aided by an imaginary friend, he embarks on an increasingly crazed series of actions, which horrify his teachers, scare his parents and amaze his friends.

This title runs two storylines. The overt one is Donnie's paranormal life and experiences. The other is a commentary on US suburban life and it's social institutions especially the reactionary approach of the media. Coupled with this is some great acting by all.

Deep, strange, entertaining and brilliant! I would suggest watching it at least two times. In fact, the more times you watch it, the more you will get from it. Great soundtrack.

Fantastic but errie movie. This movie is wonderfully acted and much better than I expected. It is one of those movies where you feel as if the story continued beyond the film due to the realistic characterisation. It is a very interesting construct -is he mad? or does he know more than us? The count down made me a little paranoid and mad world playing as the credits rolled was the black icing on the errie cake. One of the best all round movies i have ever seen and it is still as powerful as the first time I watched it.

This is a great movie. Well made. Great soundtrack. Can't actually tell you anything about it without spoiling the whole thing. Maybe this- requires a sophisticated movie audience and is not for the faint hearted or children. It has a rather poignant ending which isn???t exactly cheery.

A cult classic for a reason. It's a film that will get you in. What does it mean...what is it all about? After the third and fourth viewing you'll enjoy it even more.

I was really looking forward to this as it has received tome incredible reviews. I was more than a little disappointed when the credits rolled at the end. The plot is difficult to follow at times and you often wonder what is happening from one scene to the next. When you finally make some sense of it the movie is over and you wonder what happened? This one was a tad too weird for me.

I'm still not sure about this movie. It gets you involved at some stages, only to totally lose you again. In the end, I had no idea what had happended and had to look it up on Wikipedia to find out what the hell the ending meant!

This is a baffling highly original psychological thriller that probably requires several viewings to make sense of its many themes. Despite comical moments, it’s dark undertones made it uncomfortable for me. However, I recognise the brilliance of writer and director Richard Kelly who has made a cult classic.

As one reviewer put it " you cannot turn your brain off for one minute". You have to watch this movie at least two or three times to fully comprehend the intricateness of the storyline, but it is absolutely brilliant in every way. I wouldn't class it as a "cult" movie though most people seem to do that. Maybe it's just because it is a very deep "thinking person's" movie and one has to have superior intelligence to understand it. Excellent directing by Richard Kelly and an outstanding performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. A must watch movie, but you have to see it more than once. Enjoy !

The Directors Cut version of this movie is definitely better than this version. For starters, the Directors Cut includes snippets from the book, "The Philosophy Of Time Travel", that is given to Donnie at the beginning of the movie. Coming to grips with the content of that book is central to following the movie. If you haven't seen this movie before, I would recommend you watch the Directors Cut version rather than this version.

Donnie Darko is a movie of love and hate; fear and courage; art and science; reality and not reality; popular and unpopular; normal and abnormal...all set in a dark macabre 80's high school. What more can you ask for? Though the movie touches on time travel and the possibilities, it really is about comparing and contrasting polar opposites in a clever and at times very funny way. The soundtrack is great and brings flashes of my 80's past before my eyes. This one is not to be missed!

This is an intriguing movie which captures your attention and holds it throughout. The acting is gently underplayed and believable. The mundane is intermixed with the extraordinary so the viewer accepts the situation and becomes involved. You come to care about the characters. I was greatly saddened by the film and the mood lasted for hours afterward. Any film which is so evocative deserves all the accolades it achieves.

Watching Richard Kelly's feature film debut, one is overcome with the exciting sensation of never having seen anything like it before. Its ambitious shifts in genre, between sci-fi, drama, comedy, satire, thriller and horror, are not always handled with flawless ease. However, the conviction with which Kelly treats his vision and the sheer originality of the work itself ensure its placement as one of the best Independent American realises of 2001. The work by the entire cast is uniformly superb, but it is the performances of Jake Gyllenhaal as the tortured hero and Mary McDonnell as his clueless mother that have true reasonance. Many critics have denounced the science behind the films sci-fi plot, arguing the conclusion of the film makes no sense. I have watched the film many times and am still clueless to how the concept of time travel is supposed to function in this film. This fact, however, is not detrimental to the films success. Its enjoyable to find a Hollywood feature where everything is not spelled out for the audience; where one is not left with all the answers. Ultimately the slight confusion one feels at the end of this film does not dilute the immense power and poignance of the conclusion. See Donnie Darko, it will blow you away.

Weird, bizarre, strange but different in a good way. The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful, after two viewings I still haven't pieced it all together, it's like as soon as you think you've finished the jigsaw, it's upended and you have to start all over again! Too much thinking about this movie could cause a mind meltdown! Highly enjoyable, nice to see something different than the usual Hollywood formula teen movies.
