Director: Anna Carter
Actor: Dick Smith

Every one minute Australia's population increases by a new person, currently making Australia the gold medalist of growth! Our population is rising at a faster rate than any European nation, and faster than China, India and Indonesia. In 2009 record levels of overseas migration and childbirth increased our population by 480,000 people and by 2050 its predicted Australia's population will reach 36 million. According to Dick Smith, that's a recipe for disaster. Taking into account the serious challenges of lack of water, poor soil and urban congestion, Dick believes we need to stabilise our population, not increase it. Crowded House delves into all of these issues as Dick spends six months traveling around Australia and Bangladesh, questioning the experts claims that we need more people to deal with an aging population and skills shortages.

The DVD has several extra features including Dick's offer of high financial award to a young person or group who will take the issue of sustainable population into the public domain and initiate political debate, etc. More info on the website dicksmithpopulation.com or similarly worded. The award is still available to the right person, I believe.

Dick Smith- Australia's answer to Michael Moore? Like Michael, he battles for the little guy and takes on big business and greedy capitalism. I totally agree with Dick, everything he says is spot on and its about time someone raised the issue. All Australians need to see this. As Dick points out, our cities are over crowded, hospitals are jam packed, houses are completely unaffordable, we are running out of water, transport is a nightmare, pollution is increasing, and its only going to get worse! The government doesn't care about our standard of living, all they care about are votes and more taxes. Highly recommended.

This misses the point of population and ignores political economy. Populist and shallow.
