Straightforward, (but with a good twist), thriller with deception and dark moments. well made with simple but effective camera work to set mood.
this is a fantastic film with a touch of Hitchcock and shows how far ahead French films were in 1955 compared to the rest of the world
This is not called a classic for no reason. Filmed before Hitchcock's Psycho this is a fraught, frightening thriller with excellent performances from Vera Clouzot and Simone Signoret. I'm sure Peter Falk took his entire Colombo performance from the detective Fichet. A truly great noir.
Excellent movie. Very Hitchcockian! It is a great story with twists and turns, but everything explained by the end of the movie. Sub-titles not an issue, with the story being easy to follow. If you like Hitchcock, this one is for you.
Really enjoyed this Hitchcock feel, Noir piece. Slow but steady, dark but fun, draws on a style that has been all but forgotten in modern film. Give it a watch.
I was torn between 2 stars and 3. As much as it is a classic, and there is some strong directing and definitely solid acting, I can't get past the fact that I simply loathed all the characters involved, I did not feel connected, empathic or sympathetic with any of them. Plus the leading lady's weak personality annoyed me to no end. I know, I know, she had a heart condition, but all she did was complain and freak all the time! I know what I'm saying is completely of my own opinion and that is why I've given it 3 stars, based on the merit of the sum of its parts. It is a classic, and I know the twist would have kicked back then, but frankly I felt the 1st half definitely outshone the 2nd.
This is a great, tense thriller. It takes it's time to build up slowly, but when it does - it grips you and doesn't let go. If you liked Hitchcock's "Psycho", you will love this. The ending has a twist that is fairly expected, but it does deliver it in a haunting way. Great film.
One I've always (it seems) wanted to see. After several decades I now have and it was worth the wait. Great cast in a great movie with a terrific twist ate end which I didn't cotton onto until it was upon me.
A great classic. I saw it in London when BBC put it on the list of top 100 horror movies, and rented it again here to show my brother, who also enjoyed very much. For people who like a good story with a twist, I highly reccmmand this one.
Another so called masterpiece which turns out to be massively over-rated. To be fair Diabolique isn't hopeless, but it ain't much . Comparisons to Hitchcock are ridiculous and insulting.
Very entertaining and atmospheric old gem, with strong performances from the two female leads. Agree with comparisons to Hitchcock, but with a stylish Gallic twist.
Great ending too - actually quite scarey - you'll kick yourself that you didn't guess it.
An oldie, but a goodie. Don't be put off by the fact that it's in B/W! Very Hitchcockian indeed and a very surprising end!
