Based on the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, The Departed is set in South Boston where the state police force is waging war on organised crime. Young undercover copy, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief, Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello’s confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there is a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being exposed to the enemy – and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

We were really enjoying this movie but the narrative was disturbed by the DVD becoming stuck. - this happened at the most crucial part of the movie. We have subsequently stopped our membership as this has happened with other DVDs.

What a powerful movie. Great cast and first class acting. Would not normally watch a movie with such a lot of bad language throughout but in this case be prepared and enjoy it for the great movie it is. Highly recommend.

The storyline and premise was ok to start with, but then it got so bad that I found myself mentally re-writing the script while I was watching it. If you like Martin Scorsese don't watch this - it will seriously degrade your opinion of him as a director.

A gangster infiltrating the state troopers and a cop undercover as a gangster, as the police and the organised crime family each hunts its own mole. A fitting translation of Infernal Affairs from Hong Kong to Boston, including some directly copied scenes. This movie is well done but in my books the credit for the good plot goes to the original - those who have not already seen the twists in the Cantonese film will appreciate them all the more here.

I really enjoyed The Departed. The cast was incredible and the sarcastic wit of Mark Wahlberg was surperb...had me laughing!!! He played a tool to a tee..lol. Very impressive and the ending was the only viable option...they were all pretty much screwed. Two thumbs up..:)

A few days after I'd seen this film, I couldn't remember what it was about or, indeed, whether I'd seen it or not. I guess that tells you what I thought of it - very little. I've never been a great fan of DiCapprio, especially after I'd seen him interviewed for the Titanic. Matt Damon was good but the director certainly didn't get the most out of him (he hardly showed any emotion at all). However, Jack Nicholson just seems to get better and better, enhancing any film he is in.

The movie would have gotten a 4 if not for the extremely excessive language. I don't believe more than 20 or 30 seconds went by where there was not at least 1 swear word. And I counted at least 30 occurances of the 'c' word alone. The language was so excessive that at times I lost track of the plot. Such a shame for such acclaimed actors. I can handle moderate language in a movie when it is called for, so if you dond mind hearing language in almost every sentance I am sure you will enjoy the movie. If not, you'll squirm all the way through it.

I have to say that I thought that I might not like this. However, the direction and screenplay were so excellent that I was hypnotised throughout the movie. Such clever writing and, despite the expected denouement, the ending was satisfying. I really liked the linked strands of the two protagonists' lives, this was a very clever movie indeed. Matt Damon was outstanding and now that Leonardo is rather less epicene than many of his earlier films, also was very good.

Gotta love a movie that has Matt Damon as a bad guy and LDC as a good guy with guts. LDC continues to impress (you almost forget him on the bow of that ship shouting that he's king of the world). Not all will appreciate the swearing. The number of shootings numbs you after a while. If this type of movie is your "thing" you'll love it. I did. A truly stellar cast holds it together.

The question I kept asking myself is, why would anyone do this work? The chances of survival seem minimal during and after. I was constantly reminded of our Australian production 'Underbelly'.

I thought I'd had my fill of Scorsese Mob based bloodbaths but "The Departed" is illuminated by some wonderful performances. Matt Damon is creepily respectable as the bent cop, Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin manage to transcend their usual on screen personae and even old Jack manages to rise above his usual standard range of patented Nicholson mannerisms (the man would be nothing without his eyebrows!). However, Leo is the absolute standout, mesmerisingly catching the increasingly doubtful and jaded exhaustion of his constant double life. This one is worth the investment in time.

Every once in a while there comes a movie that makes you sit and listen and try not to miss a thing and has you rivetted to your seat from start to finish. This one has it all outstanding cast, great storyline, superb acting and brilliantly directed. Would have to be up there with the best i've ever seen. Bravo

I don't really understand all the hype around this movie. Sure, the acting and characterisation was superb but with that cheap ending it did not deserve best picture. The ending was the biggest flaw in the HK version; I thought they would have improved on it.

How does the execrable Matt Damon character manage to string the psychiatrist girlfriend along for so long ? This and a couple of other plot mysteries are my only quibble with this movie. Blood, gore, and four letter words a-plenty, but at least they aren't gratuitous. Gripping!

What a great film. I was a bit dubious that it would be too violent, but it was cleverly handled by a great director. The acting was top class - Jack Nicholson, Leonardo di Caprio and Matt Damon along with others. Leonardo has really come of age - what a spunk! The story was easy to follow and kept me on my toes the whole time. I haven't enjoyed an American film this much in a long time.

A hunt in on for two rats: one (Matt Damon) who has infiltrated the police and the other (Leonardo DeCaprio) into a mob of Boston gangsters ruled by Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Both rats are eventually trapped, but as we’re pessimistically reminded at the film’s conclusion when one rat dies there’s always another to take it’s place. Much of the macho, testosterone loaded action is infected with black humour and bullet-ridden violence. As good as Scorsese’s Academy Award winner is -- superior acting sans hammy demonic Nicholson, a well executed convoluted undercover plot quite dependent on mobile phone technology, and clever expletive driven dialogue – you’ve got to decide if watching bloody brutal thuggery has been worth it when you come out the other side. It’s your call.

What a top flick, with all these names in the film I thought it probably got the oscar by default but it is a very interesting and engaging film. I think Mark Wahlberg is the highlight of this film, I couldn't stop laughing at his character. Many twists and turns in this one, highly recommended.

Remake to the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs stays faithful to the original story but has a few minor changes due to culture differences. This is one of Martin Scorsese's best films and the ending is a big improvement over the original version.

At first i thought "Here we go another Hollywood rip-off" so i was a bit hesitant about watching this film, hence i didn't see it at the cinema. After giving it a shot, it seems Scorsese did a really good job of directing it and didn't turn it to Hollywood trash. Superb acting by Nicholson and Dicaprio. All in all a good effort and well worth watching.
If you enjoyed this title i'd suggest getting the film it was based on! HK's Internal Affairs!
