Strong violence

Director: John Madden
Actors: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Tom Wilkinson, Ciaran Hinds, Jesper Christensen

The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington) tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.

Good movie. A bit of confusion at the outset which is cleared up later on. Makes you wonder how many so-called heroic deeds are in fact fabricated and built up to be something they're not.

This movie did it's job and was quiet entertaining, however I cannot help thinking that modern day Mossad Agents would think that our intrepid trio were somewhat soft

Not a brilliant movie, though engaging and interesting. Again a movie I saw a while ago, and don't recall the ending. Action drama based, chasing a Nazi who does not roll over when caught.

Isn't the Cold War getting a bit old hat now? As are Vietnam dramas... and soon to follow Iraq and Afghanistan films

Quite disappointed - very high expectations because of the cast, the plot, the director. Plot had too many holes and the it just seemed to go far too long. Not as "riveting" as similarly themed movies.

I found this didn't quite work as well as it should, because the actors they selected to play young and older versions of the characters really didn't bear any resemblance to each other, so for a time, I had to keep catching up with who the characters were supposed to be. Otherwise, it was reasonably engaging and entertaining. Nothing extraordinary but worth a watch on a quiet night in.

Two time frame pic about Mossad agents looking back on an assignment that went wrong. Solid performances, but not a patch on Spielberg's 'Munich'.

Having read all the positive reviews, I'm not sure we all saw the same film. OK the story was reasonable and the acting passable but so slow and boring. I frequently liken films to watching paint dry but paint dries far quicker than the action in this film.

The Debt. Great cast, well directed, a complicated but exciting plot. The strength of ‘The Debt’ is the believability of the characters, especially that played by Helen Mirren. While these are flawed people they engage us because we know their secret and, perversely, hope that they survive, at least that is how I reacted.

1965, three Mossad agents cross into East Berlin to apprehend a notorious Nazi war criminal. Thirty years later, the secrets the agents share come back to haunt them. Outstanding film. Jesper Christensen's portrayal as the evil Vogel is so convincing that he steals the movie in my opinion. Sam Worthington is fighting well above his weight. Wooden, poor accent and one dimensional. I am amazed that this bloke gets gigs .........apart from that this is a wonderful spy movie

Although you get the sense there is a far superior lurking somewhere on the cutting room floor, there's plenty to keep you interested throughout this slickly made spy thriller. Mirren and Wilkinson are excellent as always, while Sam Worthington demonstrates yet again why he is heir apparent to the Keanu Reeves "I Can't Really Act, But At Least I Look Handsome" award. I'm not sure whether Sam's dialect coach just gave up or had some sort of nervous breakdown, but his accent (a weird Aussie/German via Hogan's Heroes/MIddle East hybrid) is the most engaging part of his performance. Worthington aside, The Debt is well worth a watch.

Why is retribution so important to most humans? Mossad is probably still hunting secound world war "criminals" now. This film shows their no holds barred attitude. Great acting.

I really enjoyed The Debt. Interesting plot, well-written (by the guy who wrote Kick-Ass and X-Men First Class). Great cast. Intriguing characters. And that Sam Worthington is a bit of a spunk.

I too found the movie very confusing, it changed timelines too often and it was hard to get a hadle on the characters. I like Helen Mirren and that was the reason I picked The Debt, unfortunately I was very disappointed. The fact that you know from the start what the ending will be, albeit a slight variation, it really was disappointed.

Too much time and confusion is involved in establishing the story and jumping back and forth in time. Once the story actually gets going, the realisation comes - as in many a good movie - that things aren't quite what they seemed. It's worth staying with as the pieces fall into place.
