Wonderful! Perhaps a bit dated by now.

Acting was impeccable, visuals were even better, perhaps some of the best colour cinematography I've seen. Great story, but requires patience and a little understanding, some will be disturbed by the plot implications, but that pay off is great, and it is well worth your time.

Look I suppose the music was good but long tedious wooden scenes set in a macabre little hotel in Venice dont make a movie. The acting felt anamatronic and the sound quality poor. The homoerotic element hardly spiced it up and the whole thing was essentially pretentious twaddle.

I enjoyed it but mainly because I have visited the Hotel de Bains on the Lido and also Venice several times. I enjoy period movies and for a movie 35 years old it was well produced and 'interesting'. Enjoyed the production and music

I really hated this movie. The only good thing about it was Gustav Mahler's music. The sound was extremely poor so for once I was glad of the subtitles. I grant that it was rather artistic in its setting but overall it was very disappointing.

Slow, charming revelation of the grace and misery of Venice. For jaded aesthetes only.
