Interesting take on the end of world concept. Not bad.
an australian movie without the australian sterotypes (about time.) good original story.
this movie was not too bad. the story line was different to other vampire movies but it was a good different, then again i'm a vampire movie fan. i enjoyed this movie.
As an Australian-made effort, I thought this was reasonable. I like Ethan Hawke in most of the films he has done. Willem Dafoe has had a few misses, but seems to enjoy this one. Story is a bit diferent to your usual vampire flick, which is a nice change. Better than any Twilight movie anyway, especially getting to see Jay L'gaia (apologies for the spelling) lose his head.
Possibly the most mature vampire movie around. An interesting story without all the usual vampire cliche`s.
We thought is was horrible.Didn't like it at all.
Hmm, Willem Defoe channelling Kris Kristofferson, I wonder? Anyway, aside from some of the things that could be critiqued about this film, it was still a good story - a horror/sci fi/apocalyptic tale. Very visual, lots of special effects and the whole thing was entertaining. I don't know if the Australian film with the American accents ever works, but you'll need to suspend all belief to be entertained by it anyhow. Really liked Claudia Kavan in her role as Audrey and Ethan Hawke as the good vamp. Worth seeing and there's a very interesting short on this disk too worth watching.
This movie puts some vampires in high society roles of day to day living, like in True Blood, but there are no humans left they have all been turned and have no one to feed on. The notion of being able to reverse this is a bit of a different concept to all the other movies. I still enjoyed it.
I like this film even though it had a slightly old theme, actors did a good job
I found it predictable & corney, not really what I hoped for. Disappointed. I like suspense, action and realist storyline, but not neccessary has to be true story.
Good movie if you enjoy these kind of movies which i do.
Is this supposed to be a comedy!!!!. It certainly gave me a good laugh. A few good gory scenes but it certainly didn't live up to my expectations.
Well this was very different to all the other vampire movies I have seen. Very good special effects and a real twist at the end. Very enjoyable although a few gory scenes in it.
Yeah I think this movie was ok. Don't expect a blockbuster movie but some qwirky scenes and easygoing storyline. One think which really annoyed me was Australians with American accents.
This is comic book stuff. Questions on the practicability of vampires running the place do arise and why do all the humans not have high powered guns? Honesty, vampires have a huge handicap, how could they ever take over? Most normal people are going to toast them come sunrise. Stupid, but the film is produced nicely and the acting is OK. Worth a watch, just don't expect too much.
an interesting what if? situation, and an even more interesting solution.
very budget file and with Aussie flavour didnt help
I really enjoyed this movie. I normally cant be bothered writing reveiws but I thought this movie had a good story line and yes it can get a little gory but that should be expeceted when watching a vampire movie!
Great little Vampire movie shot here in Australia. Interesting story and a brilliant alternative to the usual vampire drivel we've been seeing. Yes the acting can be a bit clunky at times but that still makes it streaks ahead of the Twilight saga.
Very much like the plot, though certain important aspects were too simple for my liking.
Borrowed hevily from the Blade films.
I cant say I liked the end much.
Great idea but execution "sucked". Very average and laughable.
not really my type of movie vampires etc
Got this movie to play spot the Brissie landmarks and expected to turn it off after 30 mins or so, but we all got hooked. Good story and acting. Not into this genre but really enjoyed it. Surprised and delighted by the optimistic ending. Gave us something to think about ....
Slightly different Vampire storyline but its Crap.....
Enjoyed it more than I would usually like a horror movie. It had a story line which drew me in as it wasn't just all blood and guts. Nice to see familiar Aussie faces. 2.5 stars.
2.5 stars is a waste - absolutely dribble - don't waste your time
omg mars, pls shut up and/or die. blood in a vamp movie? there wasnt enuf. ffs. you seem quite vocal but obviously know nothing about movies.
Very good film made in Australia, with a welcome alternate premise about Vampires surviving in a world where the supply of human blood is quickly diminishing!
I really enjoyed this movie. Its got action, a strong plot and sticks more to traditional vampire myths. Claudia does a shocking american accent but other than that, the actors are outstanding. Ethan Hawke and Sam Niel are brilliant. A little bit of gore but the plot also gives you something to think about.
good when you likr that stuff
One star for Jay from Play School. One star for the other Australian actors getting some work. Not good. Turned it off after less than an hour.
Anyone who watches a Vampire movie but is turned off by too much blood is barking up the wrong tree. Er hello, bloodlust...?! Daybreakers gets five stars from this 'lil black duck' as the gore isn't just true of a bloodsucking life form, but the science as well. Daybreakers is an excellent science-fiction set in a society where these bloodsuckers have programmed technology to assist with their day-to-day (or night-to-night) way of life. Cars that have UV tinting, blood science to explore alternate food sources besides farming humans (reminiscent of the BBC drama Ultraviolet) and bored little Vampires in pre-pubescent bodies (who are probably older than you and I but can't grow up) smoking cigarettes under freeways or in subway stations (the only way a Vamp can safely travel in daylight). Forget any and all opinions you hear or read on this movie and bite the big one (excuse the pun) and see it for yourself...
Awful movie. Turned it off after 30 mins.
Great concept, but poor execution. Nearly everybody forgot how to act, and the narrative was full of holes.
Was a real thrill to see central station in Brisbane be put to good horror film use however :D.
Brillant vampire film breaks the trend by coming up with new ideas yet mostly sticking to the tradional vampire lure most of us fans know and love. A researcher who is a vampire tries to find a cure or blood sub while as most of the world is vampires and blood is running out and creating Master like vampire mutants. The acting is brill by a stella cast and the direction sets up a nicely done future city with a nod to past films only the vampires dress up like hunters in suits and fedora hats which I found amusing. The action starts str8 away and never lets up even during the drama scenes so theres never a dull moment. Awesome vampire makeup esp. on the mutants and impressive CGI blood and gore of which there is plenty esp. towards the end when it really cuts loose with the gore. It leaves it open at the end but any sequels are welcome. Def an impressive film and for those who got put off with Twilight should def get back to their love of vampire films as this film sets things back on track. Def recommended for action and horror films thu sci fi fans should also enjoy the impressive future city. Def a keeper here.
Good movie with a different take on the vampire story. Not up with the best but still really enjoyed it, and great to see so many Aussie actors. Not much explanation around what led up to the current day situation or how the 'solution' actually worked but still worth a watch.
worth watching! Not a horror but a thriller (which I much prefer)
well a nice breathe of fresh air from underworld and twilight, hawk seems like a silent character through out most of the film giving his co stars a chance to outshine him
Well done throat sucker. Humanity again brought back from the jaws of extinction, just in time.
A new take on the vampire myth, the majority of mankind has been effected by a viral infection that turns them into vampires, a small colony of humans remain and with the help of a vampire try to find a cure to save mankind, well worth a watch if you like this type of movie.
This could have been a really good B grade movie. Take out the strange flying foxes that popped up in the cat-in-a-horror-move way - meant to be amusing ??? and the incongruous slaughter-fest at the end and it is. It had some really good ideas (not necessarily original but pretty original in film). It had Claudia, even if she was under-utilised (another part like this for her please ??? but make her the central character); Willem was good; Sam was good; Ethan ? ??? what???s up with him? He used to be inspiring. He was adequate. Vince Colosimo was proficient. Overall, despite it???s obvious faults, I enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this movie, but be warned, there are a few really gory moments....but hey, it is a vampire movie. It was nice to see some big name Hollywood actors mixed in with a good cast of Aussie actors.
What a great, fresh outlook on an old-hat but recently teenage driven subject.
It has jumpy bits and gory bits and a story line that wasn't quite expected.
It was also great to see Hollywood and the old Aussie actors that we know so well come together and work so well. I loved how they took the Brisbane location and made it into an American city, we were picking out all of the spots around Brisbane that we knew.
I did enjoy this, I think it's well worth the watch. Fantastic job.
Such a great movie. I'm so proud that it's so Australian. Bunch of Australian actors, including my favourite actress, Claudia Karvan. There are the big name actors imported from the US - but what's surprising is that Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe accepted the roles. Why did they? Only they can answer but it might have something to do with a variety of well explored themes beneath the gore, plenty of character moments and a strong script. I'm very proud of the Aussie backing this film received and what they did was amazing with such a small budget (for an action/special effects feature). The hero shot in the last part of the movie was a bit cheesy but the shots and beats throughout the rest of the film strike brilliant tones. Enjoyable the whole way through. I love vamp films but some of the garbage coming out nowdays - due to the popularity of the genre thanks to the teen books that shall not be named - makes one cringe away from the genre. This has renewed my faith that the genre can still tell a great story. Plus, the good news for traditional horror gore fans is that there's plenty of that too. :) Great job.
We really enjoyed it, and gave an extra star for the gore factor and different angle on a seemingly common topic these days! Some good choice of actors for the characters, great make up, scare factor and special effects. Awesome to see some Aussie actors/actresses in there, though you had to look carefully at times! Willem Dafoe - fantastic, as usual, but they all did well. One oddity was the glaringly obvious Australian landscape with American accents, but hey, who's complaining?! Our only disappointment was the ending, it just.....stopped. Shame really, but this movie is definitely worth at least one viewing!
Not your usual vampire movie, great story line. Loaded with Aussie actors. Loved it.
Not really into Vmapie Movies but this wasnt too bad
Ok so I found this hilarious. Perhaps not the best for a "horror" movie but must say it was enjoyable. Pretty well made, though there are a few gaping holes in the narrative. Well paced and acted. Great way to spend a night in.
Certainly a new twist on the vampire, with a very different storyline. I didn't like the generic look of the film as it didn't evoke a sense of place (or time) for me. An excellent cast do well, but opportunities for suspense or genuine horror give way to very bloody gore. Could have been so much better.
I usally enjoy vampire movies, but there was just too much blood
One of the most original Vampire flicks I've ever seen. Can't believe that it's been made by the Spiering brothers (The 2 aussies who made the low budget UNDEAD few years ago). They'e got the money now and it's a TOP movie you've got here. Looks great, the vfx are excellent and the storyline heaps good. Only point I found weak was the explanation of THE CURE.
such a great story. taking the vampire lore even a step further. i really didn't want this movie to end. you know those movies that you just want to see plot unfold completely. at least a synopsis wrap-up. i obviously recommend this movie to everyone but especially vampire fans. takes it back to the days when vampires were too bad to be good. :P
