Based on Frederick Forsyth's best-selling novel of political intrigue, The Day of the Jackal, tells of a cold, suave British assassin hired by the French OAS to kill General Charles de Gaulle. Nameless and faceless, the killer, known by the code name of Jackal (Edward Fox), relentlessly moves toward the date with death that would rock the world. The tension mounts as the methodical preparations of the Jackal are paralleled with the efforts of the police to uncover the plot, which gives the story non-stop, edge-of-your-seat suspense.

For its great time it must have been a great movie. It is probably a little dated now and far-fetched in places, but it was still very enjoyable. Recommended.

Excellently paced suspense thriller that keeps you guessing. The location shots alone are worth the admission... 10 Downing Street and The French Ministry Of Justice!!! Can you imagine them trying to film there today? Not half!

This has to be in my top 5 films. Edward Fox is perfect as the Jackal. This is excellent from the beginning to the end, never slows down.

Brilliant depiction of the original Frederick Forsyth novel. Although I didn't particularly like Edward Fox as the Jackal, the movie is as gripping as the book, and manages to divulge the devil that is in the detail.

This is a superb classic - a wonderful film of suspense and intrigue - just as absorbing as when it first came out.

In these days of terrorists and suicide bombers, it is interesting to see how much more effort and detail went into an (admittedly theoritical) assasination attempt on President de Gaulle. I'm sure the whole script was based on factual accounts of such plans. Even though it is almost 30 years old, the film is still intriguing and holds your attention as Edward Fox (the 'Jackal') builds the gun, tests the bullets (you'll love the sequence with the water mellon!), disguises himself as an old war veteran, and manages to keep one step ahead of the police right up to the final "shot". Without wishing to spoil the climax for those who haven't yet seen the film, let's just say the assasination would have been as successful as the as the shooting of President John F. Kennedy, but for a freak of luck, not the efforts of the police.

A classic in it's day and still worth watching even if only to see Edward Fox as a young actor on his way to stardom.

A classical thriller with excellent acting and a most credible story. No foul language and the sex scene is not offensive.
