The day the Earth stood still is 20th Century Fox's contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. Poor Keanu Reeves. Imagine taking the role of an emotionless extra terrestrial, and having people applaud such ingenious casting. I don’t want to come across as a Keanu Reeves apologist, but here is an actor who throws himself into every role, even if it doesn’t completely pay off (eg. Street Kings). All he has to do in The Day the Earth Stood Still is look uncomfortable in human skin, talk strangely, and be perplexed by displays of emotion. I don’t need to tell you that he pulls it off. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, in which an alien named Klaatu arrives on Earth to warn humans of their self-destructive ways.

The original, directed by Robert Wise was a cold war allegory, like every other genre film of the era. This Scott Derrickson directed remake tackles those oh so popular environmental themes, and the effect humanity has on our dying planet. As Klaatu, (Reeves) remarks, Earth is one of the only planets in the Universe to support complex life. If humans aren’t going to change their destructive ways, the other civilisations in the universe have no choice but to destroy us. Well, fair enough really.

Jennifer Connelly stars as Dr Helen Benson, a biochemist raising her late husband’s son from another marriage (Smith). She, along with many other scientific experts, is summoned to examine an incoming comet expected to destroy Manhattan. Why the smartest people in New York are being flown directly into the comet’s target is never really explained. Seems like one of them would have protested, but never mind. Thankfully, the unidentified flying object turns out to be Klaatu’s giant orb-like spaceship, which lands safely in the middle of Central Park. Helen develops a fleeting connection with the alien, until he is shot by trigger happy army folk. The U.S Government takes Klaatu into their custody, denying his requests to meet with world leaders and share his warning. Helen helps Klaatu escape from their clutches, and attempts to convince him that humanity is worth saving after all.

The story kind of loses steam from that point on. Come to think of it, there isn’t really much of a story at all. However, there are plenty of good ideas and exciting moments that make this remake worth your time. The opening forty minutes is pretty impressive, as Klaatu lands on Earth along with his giant robot friend Gort. However, once Helen and her son begin chauffeuring Klaatu around New York, the wheels begin to fall off. Derrickson is a talented visual director, but his storytelling skills need to be sharpened. The film rests on the idea that Helen and her son’s relationship is so beautiful, and so perfectly human, that Klaatu is touched enough to want to save Earth. And that leads us to the biggest problem of all:

Jaden Smith. He is absolutely, unflinchingly, irredeemably terrible in this movie. Call it youth, call it poor direction, call it whatever. Smith doesn’t make put single foot right in this film. He gets no favours from the script either – his character is spoilt, unsympathetic, curt, and most of all, annoying. I honestly believe if an alien was forced to decide humanity’s existence based on Smith’s character, well, life as we know it would be over pretty quick. The much more talented Connelly works hard, and manages to convince us that she does love Smith, a feat that isn't so much difficult as it is saintly. As mentioned earlier, Reeves also puts in a great, subtle performance (although one sequence in which he speaks Chinese is one of the strangest, funniest things I’ve ever seen). Talented actors like Jon Hamm and John Cleese do the best they can with unfortunately small roles, while Kathy Bates is fine as the misguided Secretary of Defence.

There have been a lot of terrible remakes in the last few years. They may remember to include the famous scenes, and the memorable lines, but often the essence of the original is lost on the filmmakers. Although The Day the Earth Stood Still has some story problems, and is even kind of forgettable, it never feels unnecessary. There are some interesting themes being brought up here, and it feels like a genuine update of an old classic instead of a tired rehash. And hey, I'm not going to mock it for no reason. After all, Klaatu barada nikto.

2.5/5

I was quite surprised with this film - I found it very exciting to watch and a good remake. Moreover, the environmental message, anti-war sentiments and promotion of love and kindness was just profound. 5 stars.

I liked this movie and I like Keanu Reeves. Some movies you should just watch for what they are. Entertainment.

The plot is not new and has been repeated in many an alien movie, however, that being said, it is still an enjoyable movie. Anyone who enjoys the Sci Fi style should like it.

I probably wouldn't have watched in all the way through if it weren't for Keanu Reeves. Started off well, but somewhere along the way, it completely lost the plot. Definitely not worth watching, unless you like Keanu Reeves of course.....

This movie is not the classic the first one is. How could it be? It is not startling in concept to a modern audience. It didn't have the fabulous theremin soundtrack. It is a bit preachy, but I liked those bits (maybe because the aliens care for the earth made them more ominous). It's pleasantly removed enough from the first movie, but with some scenes being similar (I can't really remember, but I think so). It's also a bit overly sentimental in places, which I'm less sure about. I also had issues with why the child changed his view of Klaatu, but overall I found it entertaining and what more do you want from a movie? Why they need to remake classics instead of rerunning the old ones and why they can't make some of the other fabulous stories out there??? . Ok I know the reasons, but they suck.

No stars! Absolutely none! Not even half a sausage! The worst film I have seen all year - not even salvagable by the stroke-of-evil-genius casting of Keanu. A movie so bad it makes 'Stealth' look like a masterwork of subtelty.

My rating 3.5 to 4- Movie makes the point about Earth's limited resources and the good side of human emotion..as well as the suggestion that the US considers itself to be "the world". The story wasn't much, but it did have reasonable acting. Also some different perspectives on "aliens" with the "coating" that can "heal". Worth watching once I think. My husband didn't think so though, as the alien stuff was too unbelievable for him.

I didn't realise this was a remake until I watched the 'extras'... I think this is just another "end of the world" movie. If you like the 'aliens are invading the world' thing, then this movie is for you. I think the only good thing about this movie is the little kid, Jaden Smith. What a cutie :)

Great intentions as a 'humans are buggering up the world' flick but does not come up with anything new and does not execute any great film making skills. The original film is far superior and achieves much more inspiration for thought in this area.

I liked this - it may not be the same as the original but it is a credible effort. Some interesting casting with Kathy Bates and John Cleese and I thought the story held up well. Food for thought in the storyline and it all flows along well.

Better to watch the original before this, in order to appreciate it more. The film's message is nicely updated, and the added action and effects don't seem too conspicuous until towards the end. Keanu Reeves gives a very good performance. Special Features include commentary and featurettes.

There is something satisfying about aliens coming to Earth to annihilate a species that is wrecking the planet - human beings - and piling as many non-human species into a super Ark to be reintroduced when the dreaded humans have disappeared. And in this movie, you wish the aliens all the best, and hope they succeed, just to save us from this kind of drivel. I LOVE sci-fi, but as soon as Kathy Bates opened her mouth to pronounce herself the spokesperson for the President of the U S of A, I burst out laughing. Here she is, confronted with proof that we're not alone in the Universe, and all she can do is bully the poor E.T. into accepting that the U S of A is the supreme power, no matter who you are or where you came from. Of course, the President is hiding somewhere safe, ready to emerge as leader of a new world, should he and his staff survive. That possibility alone makes me want to join the ark out of here

Once I knew this was a remake of a 1951 film, this actually impressed me. In todays day and age of sci-fi and graphics etc I guess it doesn't really cut it. But for a more genuine experience this was good. A good family popcorm movie. I and my family enjoyed it.

I like Keanu Reeves, and I liked the fact that they came and saved all the animals and insects, because they didn't have anything to do with the demise of the Earth. Kind of makes you wonder what will happen in 2012!! I enjoyed the storyline and the old saying goes 'If I just save one person/animal/species etc... then it was worth it"

It's worth a look, but not a patch on the original. There's an insufferably annoying kid and Keanu Reeves is definitely not in the same class as Michael Rennie. If I wasn't familiar with the story, I'd have been lost as to the purpose of the movie and as it is I'm still no wiser as to its outcome.

What a mix-up of a movie. It had the distinct impression of "too many cooks", and after watching the extras on the DVD, I began to understand the plight of the poor writer coping with Hollywood stardom and the wish to make the film more "violent". The original intent of Klaatu was not a punishing, destructive force, he was benevolent, a victim of human suspicion of the unknown and panic. This version could have been very successful, good director, good cast, but someone needed to take control, step back from the movie and actually see what they were turning out. They managed to make a really good remake of War of the Worlds, this had the possibility of the same result, such a pity it was a real mish-mash.

If you go into this expecting the artful direction of the original then you will be disappointed. Had to remind myself this is a different movie and modern premise, good effects and enough tension, just tried too hard and it shows. Also went too Hollywood for an ending that won't upset audiences. Don't tell a story if you think the crowd can't take it!

There is a good story to be told here, unfortunately this version fails. Only occasionally does a remake work and this one certainly doesn't. Whilst starting with some promise the film then goes the way of the modern SF film relying on special effects to chill the audience - they don't. The beauty of the original is that tension is suggested through the acting and the script. Little or no technology is shown, and that's how it has its menacing effect. We fear that which we can't see and understand. Once you've seen the "autobots" - well, they're a repeat of so many others we've seen. There is no need for Gort to be so big and do so much, his effect should rely on him doing so little, but so powerfully. The film never resolves what happens to him. The original has stood the test of time well, its philosophy and storyline is infinitely better and more tastefully presented. I recommend it.

An ok movie to switch off your brain and enjoy for what it is but it did seem a little rushed at the end. Like they ran out of money or time and suddenly realised that they were not finished and came up with something to end the movie quickly.

It looks good, and it's entertaining, but my earth did not stand still! The "humans can't save themselves from themselves" themes were so blatant it was bordering on sanctimonious. However, it passed a couple of hours. Jaden Smith (Will and Jada's son) turns in a very good performance playing Connelly's orphaned stepson (both his parents are dead, his mother dying when he was younger, and his father dying after marrying Conelly's character). I have to wonder what Kathy Bates was doing in this film, because the role she plays is not great. Maybe they waved a wad of cash in front of her. There have been better roles in other movies for the power-house female government honcho.

I wonder if Hollywood thinks we are a bunch of idiots or perhaps are Hollywood producers unable to fill our intelligence? anyway Hollywood did it again...BAD BAD BAD. HOw stupid the dialogues and the acting were. Academy awards for the worst acting Kathy Bates...Academy Award for the best miscasting John Cleese. Ok let's go with as a background, a subplot of global warning(of course), Keanu Reeves is an alien (how stupid it sounds yeah?) coming on earth to meet an old chinese man (Can you believe it?) This movie STINKS from the beginning to the end. If you think Independence day and The day after tomorrow were pieces of...well they will look like masterpieces after you've watched "Day the earth..." Shame on the writer. on the director and actors. This big idiocy is not worth 2 hours of your life.
