LOW LEVEL VIOLENCE, LOW LEVEL COARSE LANGUAGE

Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Actors: Jurgen Prochnow, Herbert Gronemeyer, Klaus Wennemann

Inspired by the actual experiences of a WWII German photojournalist, Wolfgang Petersen brings the life of a U-BOAT crewman authentically alive with every moment of claustrophobic and explosive terror. Autumn, 1941. Forty-three young German sailors aboard U-96 enter the war against Britain seeking adventure, respect and heroism. For them, this voyage is for glory. For their captain, a seasoned war veteran at the young age of 30, it is a mission against enemy destroyers in a blood-red sea that can devour a ship and its crew without leaving a trace. Wolfgang Petersen's unforgettable epic has undergone a major restoration and is now available as you have never seen, felt or heard it before. THE DIRECTOR'S CUT features digitally re-mastered sound and image, over an hour of never-before-seen footage and as presented in the DVD format, is more breathtaking than ever, proving to be one of the most powerful movies ever made.

The experiences of a German U-boat in WWII. Pretty good submarine movie that is let down somewhat by pedestrian direction. Also the quality of the print is fairly poor despite claims that it is a restored print. 3.5 stars

A brilliant story and the filming was very good. However I didn't feel that connected to the characters which was disappointing because it dealt with an extremely human side of war. Perhaps it could have been a lot shorter.

It removes all biases and simply presents these German sailors as nothing more than men fighting for their country, but the attention to detail of submarine life and the frightening experiences that are seen by the viewers make them feel involved and hold their attention for the almost 3.5 hour runtime like any good film should. It provides an essential anti-war message that is always going to be relevant.

Brilliant movie, I've been hunting down the mini-series. I can highly recommend this to anyone who likes the war genre and if possible, watch the Special Features - really interesting to see how it was all made.

One of the "BEST" war movies I have "EVER" seen! A very long movie but kept me interested throughout. Wish the ending was different though, even though we were fighting the German's.

Very realistic movie. I felt as one of the crew cooped up in this steel tub. A bit drawn out though.

What a special film of the triumph of the human spirit under extreme duress, short lived though it is.

Seems very authentic to me, but then what would I know about U-boats in the Atlantic in WW2?
