by Simon Miraudo,

The weight of expectation should have crushed this movie. Three years after a critically and financially successful series reboot. Two legendary villains re-introduced. A rabid fanbase who could barely wait to tear into any leaked moment from the film. Actors were recast; tragedy struck. Lesser films have crumbled under a tenth of the pressure placed upon The Dark Knight. Yet there it was, finally on the screen - gut wrenching and disturbing and emotionally draining. But when the film finished, I would have just have happily sat there as they replayed it for the next audience. Time has passed since Batman Begins. Criminals are truly afraid of the bat man, allowing District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to finally prosecute and bring down the organised crime syndicates within Gotham...

Criminals are truly afraid of the bat man, allowing District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to finally prosecute and bring down the organised crime syndicates within Gotham City. It looks as if Batman might no longer be needed, as Dent is now the beloved White Knight of Gotham. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) considers hanging up the cape once and for all, a promise he once made to childhood sweetheart and Assistant DA Rachel Dawes (Gyllenhall replacing the much less talented Katie Holmes).

It isn't long however, before a wild card is thrown into the mix. Enter The Joker (Ledger), a scarred and irrationally violent figure who offers to take out Batman for the crippled mobsters. He asks for a hefty fee - and then later burns it to the ground. It isn't money he wants, its chaos. The Joker begins to terrorise Gotham in ways more shocking than I could ever hope to describe here. I will say this: In one scene, Batman is forced to choose one person's life over another. The scene ends in one of the most shocking moments I've ever witnessed in the cinema. I could feel the entire audience's heart caught in their throat, as well as my own.

So far, I've only described the first half of the film, and I'm not going to divulge the rest. There are far too many surprises to spoil, and being surprised is half the fun. Compare that to a film like Hancock, which feels like the shell of good movie with nothing inside. The Dark Knight is bursting with invention. Christopher Nolan has really given us the greatest Batman film we could have ever asked for. He fills the film with images that are soon to be iconic, and some moments that are so disturbing I don't know if I could ever get them out of my mind. I would never want to.

Christian Bale really is the perfect Bruce Wayne, and an even better Batman. However, he’s overshadowed here by Heath Ledger, who is as good as you've heard. In fact, he's better. You can't wait until he's on screen; he's funny and scary and absolutely mental. Jack Nicholson was fun, but THIS is The Joker. Aaron Eckhart is also amazing as Harvey Dent. As fans will already know, Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face at a pivotal point in the film. When Two-Face finally does appear, it’s amazing and horrific. It's just one of the many moments that are unforgettable.

The Dark Knight keeps your stomach in knots. When the film started, I was excitedly shaking like the fanboy I am. By the time it was over, I was pale, my palms were sweaty, and I could barely hold in the emotions caught in my chest. The film is challenging in ways like no superhero film before it. There are so many "what would I have done" situations, a tie-in book of hypothetical’s could be released. It is wave after wave of distress and anxiety. Heroes suffer. Good people die.

From the thrilling score to the demented make-up; the sweeping shots to the gritty script. The supporting cast of Michael Caine as Wayne's loyal butler Alfred, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, head of Wayne Enterprises and Gary Oldman, as the good cop Lieutenant Gordon. It's all perfect. It is full of absolute white-knuckle entertainment, including an amazing car chase, bone-breaking fight scenes and one explosion barely big enough to fit on the screen.

While Bruce Wayne claims his Batman is about theatrics and intimidation, deep down he’s about humanity. He gives up a lot to save the soul of Gotham city from the clutches of the Joker. In the so-intense-you-can-barely-watch finale, the citizens of Gotham are forced to prove if there are any souls left worth saving. It’s one of the boldest moments in a brave film. If it doesn't get a Best Picture nomination, then why even bother giving out awards at all. I'm going back this weekend. See you there.

5/5

In a time where mainstream cinema has really fallen in quality due to a lack of original ideas and interference by greedy corporations I find it amazing that so recently the superhero genre has just found its quintessential film. The Dark Knight exceeds every other superhero film out there in all ways possible. An amazing superhero film. Nolan should be praised!

Oh, come on, it's a BATMAN movie. Not exactly a Batman movie for the kiddies, well, it's not at all, but despite that fact, the cast is a real ensemble, the effects and stunts and chase scenes really make this a great action flick. More than that, it is an awesome thrill-ride with a terrific performance from the late Mr Ledger.

Christian Bale seems to specialise in tortured characters, and as we know Batman is a very tortured character. Bale is always good at whatever he does, but, sadly, this is Heath Ledger's movie. There is only one scene where I thought Ledger looked like himself - wearing the nurses uniform, you could see the shape of his arms. Otherwise, he was someone else - a very scary someone else. Lots of action and violence and the usual stuff. Michael Caine and Gary Oldman fantastic as always, but I'd like to see them get some more exciting parts - also same for Maggie Gyllenhaal. I think it could have been darker, but perhaps I want to push it further because really, the subject matter (for me) has been covered enough. How about a Halo Jones movie people?

Heath Ledger got rave reviews, this movie was built up to high heaven before I saw it... They weren't kidding, Heath as the joker is (was) phenomenal. There's a little bit of Jack in there, a little bit Cesar A Romero, but he made it his own... On a side note, my wife absolutely hates batman's voice.

Heath, Heath, at last I got to see your proformance in the Dark Knight. You were a real star; in fact a pure genius in the way you gave us "The Joker", may you now rest in peace. With a little Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine my night was truly made. The movie is loud, a little hard to follow at times mostly because it moves so quickly and it is violent. Next time please don't forget Robin: we missed him.

Heath Ledger's great performance as the Joker lifts this from being a one star movie to a two. The director's approach seems to be to barrage the audience with as much violence and loud noise as possible in the hope that we won't notice how pathetic the storyline and most of the script is. No cliche is left unturned. Woeful.

A much darker batman movie that takes itself very seriously (no jokes about tailors or words to replace the violence, no "holy cow batman"). Heath Ledger makes the movie work through a study in amoral chaos. There's things to think about and enough to enjoy (but my 15 year old had nightmares). I prefer self-referential fantasy, but enjoyed this enough.

I have always loved the batman series, not the animated but the movie franchise. This movie was good in a way, that you got to see a different meaner side to bruce as well as knowing that he does love he just cant have love. It was a let down that Two face died like that and was paired with the joker rather than the riddler as he was with Val Kilmer as Batman. The make up, costumes and sets were great wouldn't watch it again, but would recommend it to others.

Heath Ledger is truly fantastic, as is the guy who plays Commissioner Gordon, but the movie itself is choppy. I don't appreciate it when I have to rewind a scene just to figure out who just did what to whom. I also couldn't understand what most of the actors were saying and had to turn on the subtitles. Most of the other main actors weren't worth their pay cheque.

I'm not a fan of the Batman movies and I only watched this because of the hype over Heath Ledgers character, The Joker. At almost 2 and a half hours, I found this an extremely long movie and watched it in two parts. I liked Heaths performance, but if it wasn't for him, I would have not even bothered with this movie. I like two of the other actors in this movie, but for me, it was nothing overly special.

Heath owns this movie, to the point where Batman becomes irrelevant to the storyline (can you believe it??) The movie is superb when the Joker is in it, boring when he's not. Heath's mannerisms are amazing - Oscar worthy indeed. What a talent. Nice touch seeing Harvey Two Face "created". Michael Caine is a worthy Alfred. The producer will be hard pressed to make the next movie in this franchise- which direction to take now that Heath is no longer with us? Christian Bale has no screen presence to make the Batman character real or even likeable. Val Kilmer was a better Batman, that's saying something.

There are a few outstanding character's in this movie, Heath Ledger was not only psychotic but slightly lovable, in a mad-hatter meet's Hannibal Lecter kind of way. Then there is Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman's small yet important part's. I wasn't disappointed by this movie at all and I think it deserve's the hype it's received. The graphics where amazing and the crew worked incredibly hard on this film, it was brilliant.

Heath is the scariest villan for a long time, but that, and the sfx, are about it. The movie can't seem to decide what it is. The 'beautiful' heroine is pretty average-looking, and the story itself mucks about with a sub-plot (Two-Face) jammed onto the end. Christian Bale is flat and the film could've lost half an hour from the end and not suffered. Gotham City is dark and foreboding but I just didn't care if Batman won.

I was disappointed with this film and couldn't wait for it to end.. I was expecting a lot more than I got! I agree with WESLEY's review, the film did suck and was at times boring. The only redeeming factor was the performance of Heath Ledger. Everybody else was napping! That includes, scriptwriter, director, and particularly editor, hated the style of chopping off scenes like that, it doesn't create suspense, just disjoints the film. How it won awards is puzzling?!

Surprisingly good - my expectations had been lowered as a result of the posthumous hype surrounding Heath Ledger's performance. Howerver, much of that hype is warranted. Look the whole idea of Batman is very admirable but Nolan's story involving portrayals of "innocent people" dying because the hero won't unmask himself, is almost as absurd as Costas Mandylor's portrayal of Detective Lieutenant Mark Hoffman, in Saw 5, as an apprentice psychopath who tries to make himself look like a "victim" by using "his sister's death" as a justification for killing others without mercy. Nolan does the same thing except that he shows Batman as being a vigilante not a psychopath. In any case, Nolan's no better than the makers of the Saw sequels at least, not so much the original which is just a good psychological concept. Go Heath Ledger but the idea of portraying people dying needlessly because a so-called "hero" won't unmask himself, influences the wrong types of people in society in real life so it's pretty bad. And also, comparatively speaking, Jigsaw at least gives his victims, for the ones he's alive in, a chance to survive whereas Joker by Mr. Ledger, doesn't and the filmmakers as I said, use Batman to reinforce the Joker's own murderous ways and then try and justify it by saying that Batman cannot unmask himself because that would put all the other people he cares about, in jeopardy. It's the same with superman, no revealing but innocents still die. Wrong types of portrayals. Stick to not portraying innocent people dying with those kinds of crap and lame justifications.

Most of the time I am woken by the end credits every time someone puts on a Batman film. By God I still can't get over the Governator as Mr Freeze, or to begin it all Jack Nicholson playing the same character yet again. So yes Heath is most likely the best Batman Villain in film to date but his predecessors were not much chop. The story is tight and Heath didn't have to die to carry this film.

Certainly the best Super Hero movie made to this day and Heath Ledger is the one actor who made it so good, so special in my opinion. The Joker couldn't be more a maniac. The character of the Joker, the dialogues, the scenes and the acting of Heath are all in one a performance. The best vilain I have seen in a Super Hero movie and I've seen them all. Yep the movie is 20 mn too long and yes the plot can be quite hard to follow at times. Anyway it remains THE MOVIE of 2008 and one more time Heath Ledger is the best actor in this. I hope he gets the academy award.

I loved Batman Begins but found The Dark Knight somewhat of a disappointment. For a start the film is way too long and the storyline muddled and disjointed. Yes, Ledger puts in an interesting performance but nothing more. The action sequences are well staged but hardly break new ground. Despite these reservations, TDK is a hell of a lot better than most of these type of superhero movies.
