Consists of two parts, the first one is very short (10 minutes or so) takes place in a hotel in Paris and fans of Natalie Portman will not be disappointed. The rest takes place on a train in India, mostly. There is also one extra feature about "making of" the film. Overall style over substance. Yes it is highly colourful (the saris, garlands of flowers, painted train (both inside and outside), etc. But it is aimless and pointless; flat fluff . The characters are boring, self-centred, odd, pathetic, damaged characters; they do not trust each other for very good reason, they are simply not trustworthy, not likeable. Garbage, thin story, uninspiring. The music has a strong presence, perhaps too strong, as somebody commented maybe the loud music is trying to fill out the void in the story and in the characters? Two stars for taste of India (colourful interior designs of the train, saris and garlands of flowers). But better order some informative documentary about India instead of watching the slow and boring long plot of this film....
I think they were on to something but were high on something...
Complete Waste Of MY Time. Couldn't even watch more than the first 15 mins.
terrible - try hard movie
I was expecting an adventure epic taking us to exotic India, filled with comedy and heart-warming stuff... didn't get any of that. Cinematography was decent. Watch it if you don't have anything else to watch, or watch it with extremely low expectations
Slow moving, oddball movie about the relationships and behaviours within a family. Amusing and poignant at times, it misses the greatness of some of Wes Anderson's other movies like The Royal Tennebaums. Strong performances, but not for action buffs. If you didn't like Life Aquatic much then don't see this one because it's nowhere near as exciting.
What a waste of time to watch this pathetic movie with pathetic acting and pathetic stars. I won't get this time back in my life after wasting it.
Garbage,very poor comedy!!
Wow, what a disappointment this movie was. I was expecting a funny amusing story about 3 brothers and it was so not funny, just stupid. We endured 38 mins (felt much longer) when the disc stopped playing as it was faulty, we were glad to stop watching it!! Owen Wilson was simply irritating, the other two brothers were insipid.
A little disappointing. Expected better
I had high hopes for this movie due to great cast but it was tedious
Born and brought up in India so loved the scenery. That's all I can say about this movie. 2 stars for scenery.
I really liked the film, but it's probably not for everyone. The Indian scenery and the trains provide an atmosphereric background to the life journey of three damaged brothers who just lost their father. Over time and some struggle they come to trust each other again.
We Thought this Movie was Rubbish,Give it one star for the Scenery
Booooooooooooooooooring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not enjoy this while watching, the characters all annoyed me, the plot made me uncomforable - I just wanted to slap someone, BUT (and you knew that was coming) there is a lot more to this story than what you see on the surface. Towards the end there is a wonderful parage of train carraiges and then it clicked with me - these are all the compartments of our lives in the train that runs from birth to death. Watch it and you'll find you never forget this movie.
Sorry Owen, but this was an uninspiring story, didn't enjoy this one.
It had its moments, but not enough.
I did not like it , boring!
I kind of liked it, but I'm not really sure why. The brotherly relationships were interesting. Quirky film, as I expected. I liked the scenery, the colour. Interesting......
Wonderful scenery, saw lots of India and the countryside but the actual movie left me a bit cold, a bit 'ho-hum'.
A quirky little movie that doesn't quite succeed as a satisfying whole. However, it's strangely alluring despite its shortcomings. 3.5 stars
So, we are all traveling on the same train in the same direction. Only the cabins are different. Great concept.
Top movie. Go and buy yourself some Indian takeaway, get that smell of the spices through the lounge room and enjoy a funny movie with some awesome scenery and a number of clever philosophical lessons along the way.
I did the domestic chores through the whole movie.
It didn't really hold my attention, despite the fantastic cast.
Aimiable, but aimless plot
Loved it...very quirky. This movie grows on you as it progresses and relationships develop stronger...worth a watch if you want something a bit different
Throughly enjoyed this movie although I still dont "get" it's point!! Fantastic photography of Indian culture and countryside.Very funny in parts
The one and only good thing about this piece of tedium is you get to see Nathalie Portman's killer body in a stunning pose in the short intro film to the main feature. As for the film itself, early on you learn that the mother fled from the three protagonists to a convent in the Himalayas. 10 minutes in the company of these tedious losers had me looking for caves in the Antarctic. Woeful.
Beautiful scenery and Indian locations - colourful. Minor characters were more interesting. Disappointing ending. Anjelica Huston was wasted in this role.
Quirky movie. Its pretty funny, but difficult to recommend.
If you love Wes Anderson's films you don't pick things apart, you just let them absorb you. This is beautiful.
A crasy movie - just bad luck they didn't put in a monkey to make it more mad. I guess it was worth watching for the smiles at the end; I'd been waiting for them.
Loved it..one for the oldies..the Gen X won't understand this...a cinemara of India from the Darjeeling train.....where else on earth can u get a ride like this!!...great acting..plot a little thin but the movie carries u along swingingly....those who poo-pooed this movie are barbarians..don't take any notice of their review...the granmas will love it... the under 50's hate it.....an 8/10
get of at the first stop or better still, jump from the moving train, trust me it will hurt less and at least you won't be wasting 2 hours of your life
if it's is'nt your cup of tea do what i should of and get off at the first stop, it does'nt get anybetter in fact it gets worse, the scenery is good, the concept it is good the story and comedy are garbage "tickets please"
Very rarely does a film let you experience so many emotions in one sitting. You'll laugh, cry, feel deeply spirited, wise and stupid. A fun trip of soul.
well my husband and I thought this film was boring and pointless. we watched it to the end but just barely.
I actually liked this movie...it was a bit odd in some places but the story was amusing and interesting. I think it is worth taking a look at and form your own opinions.
Enjoyable and in the vein of what the same director filmed before. A colourful trip with very nice acting that will make you smile most of it. Not the best movie of the year, don't expect too much and you will have a good time.
What total and absolute crap!
I didn't find it really bad and didn't find it very good either. It's a bit of a nothing film in the end. I liked the quirkiness and some of the writing, but it left me wanting more.
An absolutely dreadful film. Was this really a commercial movie or just some adolescents being silly with a camera? The film isn?t funny, just painfully stupid.
Odd...are americans really that silly...funny in parts and they seem to try to put a serious note in parts but they didn't pull it off, could have been so much better, worth a look though.
Fluff. Reasonably entertaining while you're watching it but leaves nothing behind.
Some hilarious one liners and filmed in some amazing locations in India. Unfortunately storyline was fragmented and at times difficult to follow.
A pleasant little movie for a Sunday afternoon. Nothing great but is entertaining.
Yes the scenary was great and I can see what the writer's were getting at, but it didn't come off in an appealing way. Could have been a lot more.
I agree with Samantha in ALL she said very bad even the train did not live p to our expectations.
I don't think this film lived up to its promises, although it was entertaining at times. I found it lacked engagement with its own story
You really need to like flashbacks to enjoy this. Listed in the comedy genre, but I didn't get a solitary laugh or moment of mirth. The characters were just too odd-ball to like. You end up feeling like you've been dragged into a journey you'd never have willingly signed up for.
Quirky movie with good performances from the three leads.
This movie is pastiche of episodes like most American road movies set in Texas or Arizona. The difference is this one is set on a train on a journey across India. The basic idea, however, is the same, you take some dysfunctional people and, by way of a journey for whatever reason, you pit your eccentrics against locals and locations the characters have never encountered before. The locale of this film, rural India was refreshingly different from the usual beautiful but familiar American landscape. Although there are some amusing moments the commedic possibilties of the film are not brought out or exploited enough. There could have been much more comedy interation between the Indian culture and Americans being Americans. When the brothers came under the watchful eye of the train concierge, for example, here were some of the best moments of the film. Again when they took a snake on to the train the commedic possibilities in that situation were not fully realised. And if you are going to have a comedy actor of the stamp of Bill Murray why restrict him to a minor cameo role-- without any comedy aspects to it. All in all the film is worth watching even because the settings are so different to the ordinary Hollywood run. The music which pervades the movie at every turn - again is a feature of the "road movie" and is sometimes obtrusive; much of it was not to my taste. The gratuitious music in these types of films, what is its purpose? Is it to fill up the void of a plot with little real purpose or meaning, to give you something, rather than very little?
Crap, i tried to endure this movie hoping it woul improve however all that happened was that i wasted almost 2 hours of my day!
Worth Watching - Movie you like it but not necessarily love. A quirky film from Wes funny bit here and there.
I was expecting alot more, given the well done trailer. It was a little surreal and the relationship between the brothers was odd and interesting to watch. It was just that there always seemed to be something not quite right or not quite all there. It fell a little flat basically. A well intentioned film, and it was funny, but I have to admit I was expecting a much better film. Worth a watch, and maybe don't watch it with children around as it is best not to be distracted while you try to immerse yourself in it.
Wes Anderson does it again. One of the best contemporary film makers gives us a heartwarming and genuine experience of these brother's relationship. Set behind a gorgeous backdrop and an amazing use of colors make this film irresistible. Not for everyone, as with any Wes Anderson film.
Visually beautiful but ultimately pointless.
This film had so much potential, a great cast of characters and a rich backdrop to the story. However it felt like a collection of eccentric moments rather than a cohesive story. Ultimately I wound up not caring about the characters and what happened to them.

I loved it, very quirky, loved the train journey, its a film that sneaks up on you
I totally disagree. I was awestruck by the colour and motion. I loved the odd relationships and interactions, i found it surreal. I too, was a little biased as I am a huge Adrian Brody Fan, but i even enjoyed Owen Wilson's performance
Pastiche: in parts, yes. Irritating - Owen Wilson. Cameo - Bill Murray, good. It's attempting to be something, maybe it was because I watched on a plane, but I was disappointed, but Owen Wilson always puts me off anyway. Could've been so much more. As a send up of America's ignorance of the rest of the world, it was good...though I'm not sure that was the intent!
