The game of conquest is underway. Anything goes when a predatory, wealthy widow (Glenn Close) challenges a notorious rake (John Malkovich) to seduce a beautiful young newlywed (Michelle Pfeiffer). But this time, a cardinal rule will be broken: two players will fall in love - with tragic results. This acclaimed winner of three Academy Awards boasts grand 18th-century sets and costumes. But its characters could step into the 20th-century without missing a beat. Directed by Stephen Frears from a scandalous 1782 novel and Christopher Hampton's compelling 1986 play, "Dangerous Liaisons" is "nasty, decadent fun; the surprise is how much anguished emotion seeps through its cool marble heart" (David Ansen, NEWSWEEK).

Try as I might, I was unable to turn off the subtitles. I was so frustrated by this and found them so annoying, I couldn't and didn't watch the movie, which I have never seen by the way. I have returned it in disgust. Cheers guys Pauline

Disturbing. The acting is good but but deception in the affairs of love is hard to watch.

Stephen Frears adaptation of the classic French story is fantastic, the definitive version, Malkovich IS Valmont. It is beautifully mounted and brilliantly set, totally lush. Close and Malkovich are perfect as the bored and duplicitous nobility and Pfieffer and Thurman are gorgeous as their hapless victims. The novel has been filmed on several occasions but never to better effect than here. Honours must go to Malkovich as the most persausive and seductive cad ever put on film. Close matches him blow for blow and Pfieffer is stunning as the innocent victim. Fabulous film, great entertainment.

Glenn Close & John Malkovitch are wonderfully wicked with just a touch of cynicism! Their manipulations of the other players were truly inspiring. Loved it. And the costumes & sets were magnificent.

The lovely John Malkovitch, in French lace and satin, plays truth or dare with ex lover Glen Close and loses, educates the naive but voluptuous Uma Thurman, and is completely undone by the virtuous passion of Michelle Pfiefer. This witty comedy never loses its touch.
