Curious? Yes. Remarkable? No.
by Simon Miraudo,

If youth is wasted on the young, then Benjamin Button has it made. He is born an old man, and spends his life aging backwards towards his teenage years, and eventually to a babbling baby boy. He will spend his twilight years in the body of a young Brad Pitt, a fate most of us could only pray for. But there’s always a catch. He has to watch everyone he loves grow old and die while he only gets younger and more attractive. Thankfully, the movie never descends into the high-concept comedy its premise threatens: “This summer, Rob Schneider is 'The Old-Man Baby'!” Benjamin Button is born in 1918, under ‘unusual circumstances’. You can say that again. His mother dies in childbirth, and his father abandons him on the steps of an old-age home. He is taken in by Queenie (Henson), a spirited woman ...

Thankfully, the movie never descends into the high-concept comedy its premise threatens: “This summer, Rob Schneider is 'The Old-Man Baby'!”

Benjamin Button is born in 1918, under ‘unusual circumstances’. You can say that again. His mother dies in childbirth, and his father abandons him on the steps of an old-age home. He is taken in by Queenie (Henson), a spirited woman with buckets of love and affection to spare. Baby Benjamin is believed to be on his way to the grave, but as the years pass, his body gets younger and younger. Is it miracle? Is it good luck? Is it bad luck?

A pre-teen Benjamin falls for Daisy, the granddaughter of one of the nursing home residents. Benjamin is told that he can’t be seen hanging around a little girl, for the obvious aesthetic reasons. However, Benjamin will eventually lose his wrinkles and Daisy will eventually grow into Cate Blanchett. In the future, there might be a small window of opportunity for these star crossed lovers to be together.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is tailor made to tug at the heart strings. Daisy and Benjamin may be able to meet in the middle of their lives, but they can’t grow old together. It’s a doomed romance if ever I’ve heard of one, but it’s not the tearjerker people are going to expect. This mostly has to do with Benjamin’s own passivity. He wanders through life like a tourist, seemingly bored by those living full lives around him. He’s detached from death, and, as the title implies, more curious of people rather than affected by them. “I was just thinking how nothing lasts, and what a shame that is,” he tells Daisy late in the film. It really feels as if the great tragedy of his life is just ‘a shame’ to him, and little more.

By the end of the movie, Benjamin and Daisy’s doomed romance hasn’t really left a mark on us like we’d have hoped. The film is adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story by Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth. The two films share many similarities (the retelling of a life over the course of decades), and while Gump is more earnest and sappy, I’ll wager its central romance connected with audiences better than Ben Buttons.

It’s not that the incredibly talented David Fincher is the wrong man for the job. In fact, Fincher is probably the right man for any job (except Alien 3). The film is technically spectacular and beautiful to look at. I don’t believe it’s his fault that we can’t connect with Benjamin. Nor do I think its Brad Pitt’s either. He puts in an amazing performance, particularly in the beginning as a naive young boy. I guess this disconnect just comes with the territory. A man who ages backwards will never be able to bond to another person in a truly meaningful way. We can barely be expected to return affection that isn’t there.

3.5/5

A great story about a rather ordinary yet also extraordinary life. Benjamin was born in the same year as my grandfather so I was able to think of how he had managed the years and the events of his own life as I watched Benjamin "do it backwards". Cate and Brad both did an excellent job. It is quite a long film, but I enjoyed it all the way through.

An ambitious movie. Some of it really good, especially when (eventually) it develops into a love story played by Brad Pitt at Cate Blanchett at their most recognisable. But it takes a long while to get there and this is where the movie is really poor and fails to hold any interest. It takes an effort to keep watching in the hope it will get better - and it does.

This is a beautiful and fanciful story of birth in reverse! What a unique concept this was. All the characters are warm and endearing and the movie has similarities to "The Notebook" with regard to the reading of a diary of Benjamin Button's life, his great loves and his ultimate death. At 60 I've fallen in love again with Brad Pitt for his Academy Award portrayal of this role.

Interesting story line, good acting- I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, although a little unbelievable at times, It IS fiction-come on! Anyway, I found myself liking the character played by Brad Pitt, more and more and found myself wound up in the story line even after a bit of a long start. So many underlying themes brings more 'post-viewing consideration' than other movies, but in a positive light. Recommended viewing, but not for a room full of guys, as the main theme would be romance!

This would have to be one of the most tedious and boring movies I have ever seen. Far too long, and to make things worse, it was one of those movies where they try to save money by not turning the lights on in the studio, so half the time it's hard to see what's happening. I had to force myself to watch it all the way through. I wish I hadn't.

Firstly, this is a long movie, 2.5hrs long. It's a fantastical story, at times too absurd to believe, but you want to be carried along with this intriguing tale of a gentle young man in an old man's body. It is also a love story, and not just love between two people, but also of an unlikely family who accept and love this orphaned young man and raise him as their own. I really enjoyed this movie, even though at times it was hard to maintain belief, the story kept me intrigued all the way through. Sub-titles would have been useful though, I found the Southern

Great, thought provoking concept but I found the movie very slow and far longer than it needed to be. I guess if you are in the mood for this type of movie it would be good. I found it disappointing - the concept interesting but too unrealistic to be a real brain-stretcher. Thought the effect on the story teller quite an interesting sideline. Some detail in the move improbable ie by a count back Cate should have been 90 when Brad died but she didn't look nearly like it.

I didn't want to see this film but watched with my husband, and was amazed to come away very touched by it. The premise is so absurd that realists like me reject the notion outright, but it is actually handled very beautifully. The Louisiana setting is appealing, the various characters poignantly portrayed, and the love story an existential heart-tug. I am still amazed that the story was adapted to the screen successfully and admire the result.

A facsinating story line, I love stories that are out of the ordinary and unpredictable. My husband and I loved this film, we put it on after the kids went to bed on a weeknight not realising how long it was but as we watched we had to find out the ending so it was a late night for us, and were tired the next day. I am not a Brad Pitt fan, I dont dislike him, but this film really showed his acting skills and that his not just cast for his looks. I love when you see how good an actor really can be. Cate is great in it aswell, but I haven't seen her flop yet. I loved the ending.

Great idea for a movie; base on short story. And thats the way it should have stayed. Not the 2 1/2 hr movie that it was. Started off very well; but got most boring toward the end. Too much detail in his first few years and not enough as a teenager; where I thought the drama would have been.

In the old Hollywood parlance, this is what would be called a prestige picture (and a high concept one at that). You can see the money on the screen, in the computer wizardry and the often strikingly beautiful images. But the sentimentality drifts into schmaltz and the film feels too long by half. I also hope I never have to see another framing story with old people telling their kids about their lives (as we fade into voice-over...).

What a tedious and boring movie!!!! What was the point - so this character was born old, an old looking baby who gets taller and younger at the same time. There was not story except that he was born old and got younger, no plot, no solution, no nothing much at all. He didn't do anything except get younger. Don't hold your breath waiting to see Brad Pitt or Kate, that's half way through. If Brad is in the old man (short old man) make up then you can't tell. Kate looks like an ugly hag in a red wig with too much dark lipstick. This movie is a waste of time watching - certainly not entertaining.

A fantastical love story by the great novelist Scott F. Fitzgerald. I hadn't read the book so I was looking forward to this film version. I didn't think it could disappoint because of the stellar cast, and it didn't! Cate Blanchett just knocks me out as she always plays her characters with such conviction. Brad Pitt was an interesting choice as the curious Benjamin Button, but I liked the way he portrayed his character's gentle wisdom and earnestness. Yes it was a long film, but to me that's more acceptable on DVD rather than at the cinema! However, I can't imagine it being any shorter really, to do the story justice filmically, which it did. I liked the way the story twisted and turned and linked back and forth through a fascinating time span from the 1920's to the 21st century. A cleverly crafted film based on a cleverly crafted novel. Very deserving of the 3 Academy Awards! Loved it!

An interesting premise and very watchable story, but the best part of the film was definitely the amazing special effects used to age Benjamin and other characters. They used both prosthetic and digital effects, and I've never seen such seamless work - most of the time you couldn't even pick it out. Very impressive. Also, great performances from all the actors involved. Only comes with a commentary by the director, because all the other Special Features are on a seperate disc

All this fuss made by the US for this VERY SILLY movie. You've got very bad acting with very awkward dialogue, a Brad Pitt old baby growing then shrinking in a baby old. Doesn't it sound ridiculous? Well it is. It is SOOOOOOO slow and boring that you might sleep while watching those 160 minutes full of cliches ripping off quite a lot of other flicks by the way. I was thinking of "Fried Green Tomatoes", of "Forest Gump" , of "Legend Of Falls" and others BUT "The Curious Case..." is far to do as well as those movies I have just named. This movie stinks and Cate Blanchett as a ballerina??!!! Are you kidding me? What a joke.!

Scintillating state of the art technological effects, attention to period detail and sumptuous cinematography, help make this bizarre story of reverse aging and intersecting love succeed. However, it’s Brad Pitt as the ‘ain’t-getting-any-older’ Benjamin and Kate Blanchett as head strong Daisy who make the chemistry of their fragmented relationship really come off. Knowing that their anticipated and eventual mature union would be more fleeting than most emphasized the ephemeral nature of our lives. It gave me pause for thought about the brevity of my own mortality. TCCOBB is Hollywood make believe and sentimentality but nevertheless speaks with a perceptive humanity to which we should all be able to relate.

This could be considered the current generation's Forrest Gump. It is slow moving in parts but never boring. I enjoyed the film because I was able to suspend my disbelief about the fim's central premise. Allow yourself to be swept away in Button's unique journey.

Button is one of those movies that wants to impress with its earnestness but ultimately comes across as superficial. The films greatest weakness is the lifelong attraction Pitt has for Blanchett who comes across as an incredibly self obssessed individual. In many ways the interesting possibilities of the film's premise is squandered in that it reduces it simply reduces it to a troubled love story.
