Horror violence and coarse language

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Actors: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook, Tamara Shanath, Margarita Isabel

The directorial debut from Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth), Cronos combines a surreal and distincitve take on the classic vampire yarn with an allegory about US/Mexican relations. Cronos concerns elderly antique dealer Jesus Gris who, with his eight-year-old granddaughter Aurora, discovers an ancient artifact that once belonged to a 16th century alchemist. Unbeknownst to Gris, the device—which resemble an ornate mechanical beetle—houses an immortal parasite that will grant eternal life to its host. The cost? An extreme aversion to daylight and an agonising thirst for human blood.

A spooky film . Quite captivating. Leaves you with a sense of dread as you would expect from a horror film.

Far to be a great movie and scary, watching this flick today is like watching an old serie on tv. Looks older than it is. Ron Perlman looks so young in this, the plot is a mix between a Polar, Hellraiser and a vampire movie. Filmed in Mexico and in Spanish, won't please everybody. Frankly you don't need to waste your time on this. Not worth the movies Del Toro directed later in his career.

2 . I've wanted to see this for some time. What saved it were the little touches. Most horror stories have silly premises, its what you do with them that counts. Lovely bits with the undertaker and the granddaughter, especially her reaction to the "monster", set it a bit beyond what could have been a paint by numbers exercise. As for the alleged allegory of US-Mexico relationships, yeah, Americans are always trying to steal Mexico's vampire devices. Not great, but not churned out rubbish either.

First feature from the master of modern horror. Just as well he got better, but all the ingredients for success are there from the beginning.
