Recently ordained a priest, 24 year-old Father Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) is sent to a small parish church in Los Reyes, Mexico. Upon arrival, he soon discovers that corruption and the Church are old acquaintances in Los Reyes. At first shocked, he soon finds himself in a moral predicament of his own when Amelia, a beautiful 16 year-old girl whose religious devotion borders on obsession, falls deeply in love with the tempted priest, and they soon become entangled in a passionate sexual relationship. Torn between the divine and the carnal, the righteous and the unjust, Father Amaro must summon the strength to choose which life he will lead.

And a half. Turgid, unconvincing melodrama. Very disappointing. In my review of Bad Education I pondered "Has Gael Garcia Bernal ever made a bad movie?" Well now I know he has!!! And to think that, according to the blurb, this was a huge success in Mexico. They must be hard up for quality entertainment.

This film is terrible to say the least! Why hunk Gael Garcia Bernal accepted this role is beyond me - he must have been desperate!!! Think twice before renting! Be warned - it's awful.

Not a great film. The producer hoped for a lot more shock value from the audience. I can understand why it was lacking

I was quite diappointed by this one. I expected a lot more from it - but it seems they tried to fit WAY too much into the story line. Gael Garcia Marquez probably attracts all the fans of the Motor Cycle Diaries, but he overplayed his part here.
