There are few films as modest as Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart. It’s so afraid of seeming over the top and inauthentic that it completely retreats from anything resembling conflict. There are few films as modest as Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart. It’s so afraid of seeming over the top and inauthentic that it completely retreats from anything resembling conflict. Instead of being a fist pounding underdog story (a’la Rocky) or a devastating document of descent (a’la The Wrestler), writer/director Cooper takes his aim right down the middle of the road. Throughout the course of Crazy Heart, country singer Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) traverses the short-distance between mild failure to relative success. Ironically, so does the film.

Now, modesty in storytelling isn’t a flaw in and of itself. There’s something to be said about intimate, subtle films like this. However, there are absolutely no stakes in this tale. It tries to convince the audience that it is the story of a hard-living musician, desperately clinging to the only life he knows. Doctors warn Bad Blake that he needs to cut down on his smoking or drinking, otherwise he might develop emphysema or cancer. Might develop. Dun dun dun!

Of course, such a revelation comes later in the film. When we first meet Bad Blake, he is driving across America, playing small-town bars and the occasional bowling alley. Once a county music powerhouse, he has since slipped out of the limelight and into a drunken haze of obscurity. A young music journalist named Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal) wishes to do a story on the fallen star, but they’re in bed together before she can uncover any real insights. Inspired by Jean and her young son, Blake tries to get his career back on track, and he accepts an offer from his former protégé (and current superstar) Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell) to write him some songs.

And aside from a couple of predictable conflicts, that’s about it. At no point did I buy the relationship between Blake and Jean. Bridges and Gyllenhaal are both fine actors, but neither can overcome the machinations of their seemingly unmotivated romance. Why does she fall in love with him? She doesn’t care about country music, and he’s hardly charming when they first start dating. Is it just because he shared a doobie with her? I appreciate that Cooper wants to avoid any typical clichés (such as the old ‘she falls in love with him because she grew up listening to her daddy’s Bad Blake records blah blah blah’), but no motivation isn’t automatically better than a contrived one.

Also, why do Blake and Jean have to fall in love? Wouldn’t it be more interesting if Blake begins to understand himself better after a series of interviews with this intelligent, challenging woman? Wouldn’t the screenplay sizzle if the two of them played off of one another more? They could flirt beneath the veneer of their task, yet still remain fully aware that their careers are dependent on the success of the article. I hate to sound like a Bob McKee ‘Story’ seminar, but Cooper plays this story so low-key, you can barely hear the character growth.

Jeff Bridges is undeniably great as Bad Blake. However, because of Cooper’s ultra-restrained hand, Bridges isn’t given many opportunities to shine. That is, until he gets on stage and begins performing Blake’s heartbroken blues. This feels like music written by a truly complex character; one that does not exist in the film’s script (the music was actually penned by T-Bone Burnett, Ryan Bingham and the late Stephen Bruton). Bridges deserves all the acclaim he is receiving for making Blake more interesting than he has any right to be. Gyllenhaal works hard, but not even she can make Jean an appealing character. Robert Duvall is also a lot of fun as Blake’s local barkeep, and the film is always more interesting when Farrell is on screen.

Crazy Heart is based on Thomas Cobb’s 1987 novel of the same name. Now, I’m not sure how faithful the film is to the source material, and whether the lack of conflict and general lethargy is a reflection of the book. However, the picture could have used, if not a shot of adrenaline, a shot of tequila. It is by no means a bad film, and occasionally even flirts with being great. The picture looks phenomenal, thanks to the work by DOP Barry Markowitz. For the most part however, the film seems to go out of its way to be underwhelming. Cooper is so afraid of being bold and baring some soul, he achieves little more than the anachronistic, cookie-cutter blues that his lead character spent a lifetime trying to avoid.

2.5/5

I got this out because I'm a Jeff Bridges fan will watch anything with him in it. If I had watched this on TV on a lazy afternoon it would have been ok but it didn't do much for me as a rental.

Really enjoyed the movie; probably a very common story amongst singers, actors and performers but redemption is only as far away as your inner self.

What a surprise this movie is! Very well crafted and acted by all involved. Jeff Bridges is such a versatile actor (and singer!). Beautiful scenary contrasting to the increasingly sad state of Bad...but don't think this is a depressing movie because it isn't. Ultimately an uplifting ending.

Old guy, alcoholic country singer, gets young woman and likes her young boy. Creepy. He tries to contact his own son whom he has never had time for. Son doesn't want to see him. In the end neither does the young woman. Did bother watching to the end and I usually like Jeff Bridges.

This is the first time I've reviewed a film on Quickflix because I felt compelled to share how underwhelming this movie was. I paused it twice, could not hear Jeff Bridges and his relationship with Maggie Gyllenhaal? I'm sorry but that was not believeable. At. All. What was her motivation for pursuing that? The best part were the songs.

Great acting by Jeff Bridges - no holds barred portrayal of an alcoholic down on his luck country singer. Maggie Gyllenhall is excellent too - I struggled a bit with how she could fall in love with him but young women do fall in love with older men. Not a pretty movie but the countryside is gorgeous!

Good insight into the life of a country singer and the entertainment industry. Also a inside view of the life of a drunk and how it effects their life as well as those around them. Insightful and entertaining!

Engaging and personal story of a man who unexpectedly receives the gift of love and another chance without wanting or searching for it. Jeff Bridges is fantastic (deserving of the Best Actor Oscar), and Maggie Gyllenhaal also gives an endearing performance. Cameos by Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall add a further dimension to a well crafted script.

Wonderfully acted by the leads. A believably real story beautifully told. An unusually realistic glimpse at the seedy side of the life of a country music artist. If you liked Tender Mercies (1980s) you will like this better.

I was disappointed by this movie, I was expecting a lot more but it didn't engage me at all - no humour, no tears, I was unmoved by the characters and the story. All in all, it's pretty bland. Jeff Bridges does a good job and he has a good singing voice, but I didn't find Maggie Gyllenhaal's character appealing at all, she just annoyed me and there was no real depth to her. Worst of all, the intimate relationship between these two characters was totally unbelievable - why would an intelligent and attractive journalist with a young child be in any way attracted to a down-and-out has-been scruffy alcoholic country singer who is much older than her and has no money??? Ridiculous!

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Jeff Bridges was excellent and this role suited him perfectly. As always, Maggie Gyllenhaal was beautiful and fragile. Although the general storyline of this film is not at all unique it is still worth watching even if just for the blues flavoured country music.

Boring. I wanted to hear more about his recovery process, rather than sitting through so much scene setting. Getting sober is when life gets interesting. What did he learn from his recovery and what inspired his songwriting?

Verteran hard drinking country singer falls on hard times. Most notable for the convincing performance of Bridges. Otherwise it is the usual set of cliches for these type of things. The young love interest, the protege and rival, the problem drinking and health problems. 3.5 stars

I would give it 3 1/2 stars. Good, but not great! Jeff Bridges is excellent, but the story is fairly predictable and a little slow. For me, the best part was watching him mumbling words to himself and strumming his guitar while attempting to compose new songs. The birth of new songs and subsequently a hit for 'Tommy Sweet' played by Colin Farrell. I thought the music and his singing was pretty good, a lot like Kris Kristofferson.

Jeff Bridges stars in his Oscar winning role as Bad Blake. An established country singer, with not much to show for a life of touring. Bad loves singing, drinking and women and Bridges impresses with his singing. Maggie Gyllenhall stars as Jean a single mother and journalist who see's through Bad's image and falls for him in spite of herself. Allowing Bad into her life and the life of her young son Jean persists with the relationship with Bad until he risks the only thing more precious to her - her son. Bridges and Gyllenhall give convincing performances and the story show's how alcohol abuse effect everyone involved.

I really enjoyed this movie, which features some great original country songs actually performed by Jeff Bridges... not that this is the first film to showcase his singing as well as his acting ability. His character is painful to watch at times, and although it is difficult to understand why Maggie Gyllenhall's character would fall for him, things like this happen in real life all the time. All in all, great performances all round - and whether or not I believe an actor is deserving of an Oscar does not dictate how much I appreciate a film.

The songs sound familiar, even though we've never heard them before. Similarly the story is familiar: singer brought down by booze seeks redemption. Maybe too late for this particular character, who's actually not too bad at all as a singer (Jeff Bridges in the role). The first half of the movie is more performance than story, while the rest is very much story. Overall, not a bad effort.

Read the critics review as he said it much better than I could - great actors and what could be a great movie but it just doesn't veer off the predictable at any stage and the central relationship doesn't ring true - aside from the massive age gap why would she get with him??

I think Jeff Bridges put in a fine performance in this easy to watch film. Maybe not Oscar-worthy on its own, but I am happy for Jeff to have one for his body of work. We could not see what Maggie Gyllenhaal's actually saw in Bad Blak and why she fell for him so fast. I couldn't see any chemistry or attraction with Bad as he was fairly grotesque at that time. Jeff Bridges' musical performance is very strong as well.

Jeff Bridges plays a has been singer who has had too much booze and ciggarettes and lives on past glories. His acting is OK but didnt warrant a best actor oscar IMHO. The movie plods along in a pace that doesnt take too much brain power to watch. Colin Farrell is totally miscast as Tommy Sweet the new country superstar. What were they thinking! This aint no Tender Mercies which starred Robert Duvall in the same sort of role years ago. Overall disappointing
