There’s not all that much going on beneath the surface of Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens, which is probably too much to ask of any movie actually called Cowboys and Aliens anyway. Still, it would have been nice to see a revisionist take on this mash-up of two stale genres. In the past couple years, we’ve enjoyed Rango and The Book of Eli, which, in their unique ways, took on the tropes of the typical western and turned them on its head (The Book of Eli loses points for a very silly ending). Even Joel and Ethan Coen had a crack at the genre with True Grit, and although it wasn’t much of a game changer, the film was a whole lot of fun and still carried the existential baggage that comes with any Coen brothers’ flick. Meanwhile, cinemas have been flooded with movies about invading alien arm...

Meanwhile, cinemas have been flooded with movies about invading alien armies of late, and you’d have to go back to 2009’s District 9 to see one make any attempt to subvert that cinematic cliché (stopping off, regrettably, at Skyline, Battle: Los Angeles and Transformers: Dark of the Moon along the way). It wasn’t unreasonable to expect Favreau, working off a well-respected graphic novel, would at least provide something that felt fresh. Cowboys and Aliens does not feel fresh. But, it does feature cowboys fighting aliens, and sometimes that’s all you really need.

The first act is promising. Daniel Craig stars as one of the grizzled eponymous cowboys; he wakes up in the middle of the desert with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why there is a shiny iron bracelet on his wrist. As he soon discovers when threatened by a couple of wannabe bounty hunters, he’s fast on his feet and shockingly good at taking out enemies. This feller weren’t no saloon-owner in his previous life. He arrives in a desolate town in New Mexico (circa the late 1800s), run by cattle-rancher Dolarhyde (an even grizzlier Harrison Ford) and his reckless son Percy (Paul Dano). Sheriff Taggart (Keith Carradine) recognises ‘The Man With No Name’ from a ‘wanted’ poster in his office, and informs the stranger that he does have a name; it’s Jake Lonergan, and he’s a criminal with a history of arson and ‘mayhem’. Before Lonergan can be carted off to face the judge, a fleet of the titular aliens fly into town, blowing up buildings, abducting townsfolk, and just generally bothering everyone. Suddenly, Lonergan - whose bracelet has the power to shoot down these invaders - isn’t their biggest threat but rather their best asset. Dolarhyde, Taggart, barkeep Doc (Sam Rockwell), preacher Meacham (Clancy Brown) tracker Nat (Adam Beach) and a mysterious young lady named Ella (the always engaging Olivia Wilde) form a posse to hunt down these otherworldly ‘demons’, with Lonergan and his alien-killing arm-piece leading the charge.

By this point in the film, it has become clear that Favreau is not interested in any of the wisecracking jibes featured front-and-center in his Iron Man films. This is a much more serious affair; not necessarily stone-faced, but perhaps a little bit joyless. The picture's visual palette doesn’t even evoke his super-slick Marvel adaptations. Favreau's DOP Matthew Libatique makes Cowboys and Aliens look grimy and dirty, without resorting to the fake (and lame) scratches seen in recent exploitation flicks such as Machete. Again, this is all fine, especially during the tone-setting opening half hour. It’s only during the second act - when this rag-tag bunch traverse the desert - that the pace of the film practically shudders to a halt, and you begin to crave some fun. Although the cast is committed throughout and the film’s finale is suitably action packed, that limp middle section is completely deflating. The screenwriters – of which there are approximately one thousand – should have recognised the complete lack of conflict, action and character moments at the film’s core, and Favreau should have known that the script was not doing his picture's already-staid atmosphere any favours.

Maybe it was a little bit dismissive to claim there isn’t much “under the surface” of Cowboys and Aliens. Yes, the characters are all western archetypes, and the sci-fi villains (as freaky looking as they are) aren’t all that different to those we’ve seen before (and their motives for Earthly domination are pretty questionable). But, as the cowboys – comprised of enemies – team up, and eventually accept the help of Apache Indians and a gang of outlaws, we’re reminded of the communal power of a common threat. Not that Favreau does much with that thread, but hey, it’s something. Nonetheless, the 12-year-old in me can’t resist scenes in which the always cool, calm and collected Craig – dressed in his full wild west get-up – whips out a six-shooter and plugs away at a nasty extra-terrestrial. Call me a sucker, but as far as appealing film imagery goes, that’s an easy win.

3/5

This trite is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I actually don't have the words to describe how bad it is. The initial story concept has some merit, but when the rubber hits the road the execution and end product leaves you begging that you can have the last hour or so of your life back, just so you can do something more worthwhile. Don't waste you time or money with this. Rent 'Aliens' and 'The Good, bad and the Ugly' and watch them back to back instead...your inner child will be more thankful.

Interstellar petty crim aliens in gucci fighter planes with laser lassoos invade gold rush town. Outlaws, townsfolk, injuns, sheriff, hot alien chick, superstud D. Craig and sundry others unite to save world. Classic quote from possie member: "Got a kid and a dog, why not a woman?" H. Ford unconvincing as nasty cattle baron. Faithless dog switches master at every scene, but redeems self in showdown with alien. Final outcome? Brute alien power succumbs to unanticipated human courage and cunning. Abductees rescued. Mothership destroyed. Aliens and outlaws splatterfested; injuns and townsfolk survive. Ah, the good old days of the wild wild west!

Good fun. Definitely handling of genre hybrid with Harrison Ford's grumpy old cowboy carrying a lot of the production and, Paul Dano as his weasely son Percy Dolarhide giving viewers someone to despise. Steampunk rocketry and frog-hopping green aliens with extendable arms were ridiculous and cool at the same time. The whole thing was no doubt elaborated from an old Amazing Stories magazine cover but there was just enough tongue in cheek to make the project work

I'd recommend this for a light night of escapist diversion. One to just let roll easily over you. Does strikes me that a few key elements are straight out of Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity. Not badly done though. And Harrison Ford offers a nice workman-like job. I'm sure for some, just seeing Daniel Craig in a pair of leather chaps will justify the experience entirely.... Why is it though, that aliens always have a set of slimy opening flaps somewhere, that something protrudes from? Some very Freudian projections going on in this particular 20th/21st century popular motif.

I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed this movie as it seemed really corny and laughable from the trailer. The concept of mixing western with sci-fi and action elements works really well. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford make a really awesome cowboy team and I liked both performances. The aliens looked pretty kool as well. Worth watching :)

Daniel Craig... I don't get it. Why is he a sex symbol? He goes through this movie looking like a grumpy garden gnome (that hat is atrocious!). And poor Harrison Ford... he's so doddery now that it feels like sympathy casting. But the effects are good, if a little silly (a horse can keep up with a spaceship??) -- worth a watch, if you can suspend a LOT of disbelief...

Want a tacky movie? Here is one: Cowboys, bandits, indians and Aliens! I don't understand why Daniel Craig is playing in such a dumb movie. It is so bad that I was bored from the first minutes. The action and characters are so previsible. The scenes have been seen in tons of other movies that frankly you figure out the whole movie before it ends. All the elements of a Hollywood movie are there good versus bad. Love story, happy end.... 2011 was the year of a lot of bad movies and Cowboys and Aliens is definitely in the list between Thor, Rise of the planet of the apes and Battle of LA. Well iif you love no brainer movies like Independence Day or Transformers then you might like this.

Really enjoyed this movie and found Daniel Craig's performance as Lonergan really compelling. So, this movie was of the comic book genre, actually adapted from an actual comic book of the same title. And the genre's of sci fi meets western, but I thought it worked and the filmmakers did a good job of it. There was lots going on all the time and I wasn't bored for a moment. The only thing I found that was overdone was the exaggerated emotional connections between the characters. I think that the emotions were overemphased on the sickening side, considering that these people of the old wild west were real toughies and so the film would have been better with that still present, but toned right down. One thing on a philosophical note. There were several factions, warring ones, in the plot: the townspeople, the bank robbers, the native Americans and then there was Jake and they were all at each other -like murderous. But when a common enemy comes along, namely the aliens, they all pull together and discover that they love humanity after all. Ha. Really liked the performance of Noah Ringer (Emmett in the movie). He's the young chap that played the lead in "The Last Airbender". This young man's got a future in film. And I really liked the character that Clancy Brown played too (the preacher guy). Hollywood always needs a liberal quotient of wisdom!

I don't know why reviewers have bagged this so much. OK it's a little po faced and it could do with a few light touches and wry grins. It seems to take itself SO seriously but the movie overall is a lot of fun. Jon Favreau has made a straight down the line cowboy film....and thrown in aliens. Daniel Craig does a great American accent and is quite brilliant throughout, although I think I liked his trousers and chaps a bit too much....but going on. Harrison Ford is great as the grumpy old man, a role that he really doesn't have to act. I have to admit to slight boredom halfway through and I thought the aliens were daft but the movie was fun. Really!

This film through me at first, then the tripping through his memories of what was happening and how he come about the wrist band was excellent, the ability to put aliens against the backdrop of the Wild West was an exciting plot. I expected to see harrison as the alien, but to mysurprise he was one of the Landowners and a pissed landowner when his cattle keep turn up dead, Daniel Craig was excellent as the confused cowboy-outlaw and his face never gave away the plot.

I put this on the list because of the great cast et al, but didn't know what to expect. I'm not a sci fi fan but husband is. It was just so much better than I expected - I can say I really enjoyed it. Beautifully filmed, good script and story line, just withing the boundaries of acceptable violence, suitable for teens of 15 who understand sci fi, both Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig - wow! As a western it works well, love the scenery and characters. The underlying theme of foes joining forces to fight a common enemy is a good one. I love the preacher's quote - "I've seen good men do bad things and I've seen bad men do good things" - a second chance for those who wish to change. Such a good movie. Dont watch casually, be prepared to sit down and pay attention.

I saw this at the movies - amazing cinematography; action packed! One of the best sci-fi movies that I have seen -up there with Aliens. Rough and ready cowboys (from the 1800's) -v- horribly frightening, demonic aliens - and what an imaginative storyline! It delves into the abductee scenario and subtly relates to current theory/trends from conspiracy sites. It certainly doesn't insult the intelligence -two genres for the price of one!

Disappointed. seems a bit like sucked out of the thumb. maybe because they used 6 different screenwriters? It has everything: actors, action, aliens, indians added also for good measure, but somehow it failed to hit the spot. Can't say we feel like watching it again anytime soon.

Great action and a good cast. Entertaining, despite the weird storyline.

This was a surprisingly good movie despite the somewhat suspitious story line.

OK what's not to love.... High Noon meets Aliens. This movie may have meshed movie cliche as much as convention but it totally pulled it off. Really enjoyed it. Good performances, enough twists to keep it interesting, terrifying body count and great cinematography. Highly recommend (but not for little kids bc the Aliens are truly demonic.) Loved the behind the scenes doco in the extras showing the actors playing the alients, they looked like linebackers with pingpong balls on their heads, about as ridiculous as the CGI ones are scary.

Comic Book stuff. Over indulgent and very stupid. Can't belive Daniel Craig got involved in something so idiotic.
