Moderate horror theme and violence

Actors: Louis Jourdan, Frank Finlay, Susan Penhaligon, Jack Shepherd

The Gothic graveyard of London's Highgate Cemetary adds extra atmosphere to this version of Bram Stoker's horror classic. Louis Jordan sinks his teeth into the role of the blood-thirsty Count and into a full-blooded supporting cast. A cult classic from the seventies, the film faithfully recreates Stoker's characters and prose and is regarded as one of the best adaptations of this gothic tale.

Why does the BBC rehash, and sometimes very badly, well tried stories. The Dracula saga has been done to death and much better than this pathetic version. Not even a name like Louis Jordan could save this one. The older Nosferatu and even the campy Hammer version, were far better than this.

Leisurely but essentially accurate take on the Bram Stoker novel; detailed, beautifully shot and perhaps a trifle slow by today's standards (remembering it was made in 1977) but all in all, a very classy BBC production. They certainly know how to put together a period drama. Louis Jourdan does a great version of the Count —menacing without feeling it necessary to chew the scenery; his understated performance underscores the true sense of menace missing from so many other versions of this classic.
