Lewis is a uni drop-out who takes a last-ditch job in an asylum working with patients who are interested in the dramatic arts. He thinks his work will involve staging a small variety show with the group, until long-term patient Roy insists that the production be nothing less than a grand staging of Mozart's opera Cosi Fan Tutte. An ambitious thought to say the least. After all, none of the patients can speak Italian nor sing and the cast is made up of aging nymphomaniacs, obsessives and pyromaniacs who really have other things on their minds.
Funny, warm and wonderfully mad, Cosi, based on the celebrated play by Louis Nowra, comes to joyous life with a dream Australian cast including Ben Mendelsohn, Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths, Barry Otto, Aden Young, Jacki Weaver, Pamela Rabe, Kerry Walker, David Wenham and Colin Friels.

Wonderful movie. Great cast of characters and relationships. Some very funny lines. Let down a bit by that lack of production quality that afflicts many Oz movies, esp. washed out scenery and poor post production sound. But overall a great little movie, thoroughly entertaining.

Who, in their right mind, would consider performing Cosi Fantute with a mentally handicaped cast. But anything can be done where there is patients and love. A typical can do aussie film brilliantly conceived and excecuted.

Another bit of classic Aussie film that sees a star cast portray a series of mental health patients try and show that sanity is subjective and that art is the ultimate form of expression. Very well acted but a little too slow and low-budget to make a real award-winning drama.

Uplifting, inspirational film - which is more than a little amusing to boot - exemplified by outstanding performances from all involved. Mendelsohn is terrific as the apathetic amateur, starved artistically, and frustrated at the task he's been given. Yes, it's a little formulaic (and reasonably predictable), but that's the fun of it - but don't worry, Hollywood couldn't even get remotely close to what Joffe has created here with a huge all-star cast.
