Actors: Dennis Hopper, Paul Newman, George Kennedy, Wayne Rogers, Strother Martin, J D Cannon, Robert Drivas, Lou Antonio, Jo Van Fleet

In this classic southern prison drama, social misfit Lucas "Luke" Jackson (Paul Newman) is incarcerated for a petty crime and sentenced to a chain gang. Luke is a sullen and laconic young man whose cool defiance of the sadistic warden and bullying inmates earns him the title "Cool Hand Luke." But as the prisoners' respect for Luke grows into hero worship, he finds that he must risk everything in order to live up to their expectations.

Filled with dozens of memorable scenes (Luke eating 50 eggs) and quotable lines ("What we have here is a failure to communicate."), COOL HAND LUKE is a testament to excellent screenwriting (Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson) and Newman's charm and skill as an actor. The film also features an outstanding supporting cast that includes George Kennedy, Strother Martin, and early screen appearances by Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton.

I began watching this film on very late night TV, and found myself spellbound. I couldn't finish it. Watching it on DVD without ads was much better. OK, so the film is probably a bit odd, but it works for me. Its probably not for everyone, but its very involving once you get into it.

A classic sixties attempt at addressing the problem of authority within society, I felt that the film was a bit slow and took too much getting used to. That said, Paul Newman makes this film and for that reason I feel that it is worth the watch. Overall, I'd recommend it but not highly.

This along with Butch Cassidy is one of Paul Newmans best performances....saw it as a kid years ago and loved many years later revisted him on the chain gang and yes, it's brilliant....just watch it>
