Contagion is the last movie you want to see with a sore throat. Or maybe it’s the first movie you want to see with a sore throat. What could possibly top the sensory, 4-D, cinema-going experience of feeling your tonsils swell as images of sweaty, wheezing, flu-ridden infectees flicker before you? Steven Soderbergh’s latest ensemble drama is the most effective ad for Purell not actually commissioned by the hand sanitiser manufacturers … that we know of. Did Soderbergh or screenwriter Scott Z. Burns purchase a hefty load of shares in the company before beginning production? Might be worth looking into. Aside from that, Contagion is also a captivating outbreak thriller that eschews Hollywood clichés and embraces cold, clinical science. Its adherence to the hard realities of a super-flu epidemic may dull the film’s emotional notes, but the picture successfully plucks terror and paranoia from the mundane. You may not look at another human being again without seeing them for what they really are: filthy, germ-ridden carriers; no better than that monkey from Outbreak. Soderbergh never really seemed like a romantic anyway.

The fun begins when Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns home from a trip to Hong Kong. Her supposed jet-lag induced sniffles quickly evolve into something far nastier, and eventually fatal (Gwynnie’s not really in the film much at all; we’d argue she probably doesn’t deserve a spot on the poster, if it weren’t for her priceless expression). Similar cases are soon reported around the world, sending the doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Laurence FishburneKate Winslet, Jennifer Ehle, Demetri Martin) into a research frenzy. The days tick on, and the virus continues to spread (not just person to person, but across inanimate objects like bus poles, used drinking glasses, shared die); a WHO epidemiologist (Marion Cotillard) heads to Hong Kong to uncover the identity of patient zero, while a conspiracy theorist blogger (Jude Law) documents the apparent ‘end of days’. Meanwhile, Beth’s husband Mitch (Matt Damon) and daughter (Anna Jacoby-Heron) isolate themselves in their home, while the world around them falls apart.

Soderbergh is a maestro when it comes to orchestrating and connecting disparate, international story lines; this we’ve long known, and he confirms it once again here. Editor Stephen Mirrione and composer Cliff Martinez (who does much of the heavy lifting, particularly during the picture’s multitudinous montage sequences) aid him expertly, and keep the film moving at a propulsive pace. The only thing standing in the way of Contagion’s velocity is screenwriter Scott Z. Burns; although his script is economic where it counts most, a couple of the plot lines turn out to be superfluous. Marion Cotillard’s thread in particular stalls faster than a 1983 Yugo, while the rest of the picture seems to move faster than a Maserati (I’m not a car guy – does this metaphor work?).

The cast is uniformly great, particularly Ehle as the committed doctor who risks her own life looking for an antidote, and Damon, as the grieving father trying to keep his daughter safe. There are plenty more wonderful performers who I’ve not even mentioned yet; such is clown-car emergence of talented character actors (Bryan Cranston and John Hawkes among them), the film at times feels like a really depressing version of It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Though the ‘case study’ approach may not be satisfying for all, Contagion offers a fresh – and deeply unsettling – look at the way in which our fragile ecosystem teeters on extinction, without resorting to overblown theatrics or skyscraper-demolishing pyrotechnics. Soderbergh, who also acted as cinematographer, shot the film on the 4K RED One Camera, making the picture look so crisp it may as well be three-dimensional. That being said, close-ups of coughing and germ-swapping are hardly the kind of thing we need to see in high definition.

4/5

A different view to a story we've seen before but well done. Enjoyed it.

Very good movie which disguises its procedural aspects and a heavy warning about something that could easily happen (that is, the spread of a kind of plague for which we are seriously unprepared) with an A-list cast and snappy pace.

Too slow for a thriller. Pretty average acting and average directing.

Although a plethora of 'stars' appear, we are, fortunately, spared Mr. Liam Neeson who would have been a 'natural' fir for this sort of film - maybe he had a cold at the time!

Despite the plethora of stars ‘Contagion’ is mundane. Like most ‘warning’ films of this kind its beginning is engaging. The virus in the movie has parallels with the Spanish flu Pandemic of 1918 when between 20 and 50 million died but predictably though, as the virus spreads, mankind degenerates into desperate and selfish behaviour. There are of course people who are honourable, willing to sacrifice for the greater good but most characters are one dimensional; the nature of a disaster movie. Matt Damon is the exception but even he struggles to make his character work.

(Spoiler alert) good acting and ok movie. Day one should have been at the beginning of the movie instead of the end. By the time you get to the end it's not really important how it all started, all the characters have stopped trying to work out how it started. (You end up saying "ahhhhh......okay")

Excellent! I believe what made this movie great to watch was that it's a real life scenario, that could happen to earth one day. Well worth viewing!

I'm sorry but this movie was supposed to be Amazing and Scary. The only thing scary was Jude Law's accent, seriously what the hell was that supposed to be. The stupidness of the health official telling everyone not to do this or touch that and is she wearing any kind of protection. Well, duh, no. And we all know what happens then. And two other plotpoints that time forgot or didn't even bother explaining which I won't complain about here for fear of upsetting and spoiling it for someone who hasn't seen it yet. Thank goodness for Matt Damon. And yes I am shallow enough to say that! :)

At last a movie showing the truth about where all these horrible flu's and virus's we get from well I won't spoil the ending but this is where they all stem. Quite scary to think this could really happen.

The idea behind the film was OK, but the so called 'background music' was deafening and made me turn it all off!!!!@!!! Why have deaf people directing film- shuts? Micro-organisms make no perceivable sound and ill people need quiet! Lots of talk was indiscernible because of shocking noise (noise= undesirable sound). I switched to free to air and watched a lovely Australian production with a minimum of back-ground sound. That made me feel much better! My advice for this picture=don't watch it! read the book instead. Use the disk as a saucer to remind you of s--- Yankee thrash!

Completely underwhelmed by this movie, really poorly done – I had a job to get through it. The plot is the same as done many times before – the ending, well …… was just really poor. I would not recommend this to anyone – unless you suffer from sleep deprivation.

Usually, when a movie has a huge amount of starts, my radar of "this won't be good" comes up. Not in this case tho, this one was very well done, with most only in it for a very short time, e.g. Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow. This was very well done & seemed more like a documentary then a movie. Back in the 80's we saw a spate of these types of movies & then they disappeared from the screen. It was good to see one now as something "a bit different". Well done & thought out. Only bad thing for me was the Australian "accent" done by Jude Law - terrible!!!

I really enjoyed this movie but it's clearly not for everyone. If you don't enjoy the more documentary style movie that sticks more to reality than high action/drama/deep human emotions etc give it a miss - you'll hate it! (And when I mean documentary style - don't worry no scary Blair Witch style camera work!) Just a good "real life" take on viral epidemics and the human response. If you like the usual disaster/end of world cookie cutter fodder that Hollywood has been churning out for years don't watch this expecting to see the same. I enjoyed this - a refreshing change.

Actually a really good thriller that effectively uses the idea or threat of a virus to elicit fear out of the audience, and the human drama manages to rise to engaging. Cast leads were solid, particularly Matt Damon and Kate Winslett, and I was glued to the screen throughout.

So much wasted potential. Could have explored so many possibilities. However it never really did any of them. For example noone went to work as the streets were shown to be deserted, but society did not collapse. Who supplied the water, the electricity and the sewage treatments in order for people to stay at home? Not to mention the food.

Engrossing storyline, outstanding direction and a star-laden cast that all play it low-key and give wonderfully authentic performances. A worthy attempt to humanise the Hollywood disaster film; Contagion prefers science to CGI and is so much the better for it.

Wow Utterly fantastic. This is the scariest movie of the year...or any year. It's frightening to think that any surface you touch can potentially contain the 'next big plague'. It's certainly a reminder to wash your hands that's for sure. Contagion is shot like a documentary so it probably isn't for everyone. I loved the pace though and it built up the characters nicely so at least you have an interest in their survival.

It's an intriguing and relatively fast paced film, but it stumbles in the second half and that is pretty much due to the absence of one of the actors! If I hadn't already read the screenplay I fear I might not have been able to follow it as much as I did. Some elements just weren't as effective and for the most part ended up not making sense.

A frightening and realistic scenario. The first half hour or so of the movie is terrific with a frenetic pace and scenes all over the world. After that, the scriptwriters didn't seem to know what to do; a lot of stories are introduced and most are not fully developed and more often than not left with loose ends. It all gets a bit confusing. A focus on one or two individual stories would have been more engaging.

Massive disappointment. Don't be sucked in, even great actors can't make a terrible story work. This movie had a story to tell and told it so badly it was incredibly boring to watch. Great actors in this movie, all of them had nothing to work with. Shocking work putting the movie together, badly produced and badly directed. Nothing good to say apart from do yourself a favour and save 2 hours of your life by avoiding.

I was really looking forward to seeing this Movie, but found it to be a major disappointment. Let's face it, the point of a movie is to entertain the audience, but this one becomes too bogged down in the technicalities of hunting for a virus to be worth watching. Basically it has too many stories interwoven throughout the tale, and then it all comes to a deflating end, no grand finale just a "That's All Folks"! It could have been a lot better if they just concentrated on one character, for example Kate Winslet..

Saw this on the big screen and it is excellent. So different to all those other armageddon type movies. A quality cast, but this movie is not character led. It has minimal narrative but you know exactly what is happening. It approaches the spread of a deadly disease from a number of points of view, from the scientists, to the conspiracy theorists. Superbly directed by Soderbergh. Excellent.
