Excellent story. Never boring. Got more and more interesting and compelling as the film went on, Thought about it a lot afterwards
What an incredible movie. Beautifully shot, well acted, riveting story. Definitely recommend. Ralph Fiennes is mighty fienne I must say :) He has the most incredible speaking voice.
WOW! An excellent movie - very powerful and brilliant from start to finish.
This is a story about a man who is a diplomat (played by Ralph Fiennes) but is most at home tending to his plants. His volatile activist wife (played by Rachel Weisz) makes some enemies and he is thrust into a mystery that is out of his depth. The baddies are big pharma and various shadowy characters. He and his wife are opposites, and this is as much love story as thriller. There aren't really any great surprises, but it is still a rivetting movie.
Enjoyable mystery with well-developed characters, and interesting relationship twists
Really enjoyed this movie.
An elegant, finely crafted thriller. Recommended.
Romance and intrigue in exotic African locations. Deception, betrayal, and lust; racism, greed and conspiracy—all seething under the smooth exterior of the diplomatic world. A great thriller.
Anything with R Fiennes is thought provoking, as was this film
A well crafted movie, full of intrgue and beautifully shot.
Great plot, damned good actors and amazing scenery...what more do you want? A thriller with many twists and turns (political and humanitarian). Frightening conclusions as to the value of some human life!
Great film thoughtful, challenging and in places a bit hard to watch but oh so worth it
It's what we all need to know might be happening. A wonderful insight. Cleverley put together. Good viewing.
I enjoyed this film immensley, of drug companies using the south africans as guinea pigs for trial of their drugs, was very haunting at times and a thriller with suspense
Again, Graham Greene's writing translates into a gripping movie about the perfidy of the pharmaceutical houses in the third world. Convincing and beuatifully acted.
Visually very beautiful and extraordinary cinematography. My only substantial complaint was with the main male character he seemed just a little too pathetic.
A sensitive tale of love amongst global politics and finances .. very good rendition of the book
An interesting plot which squarely on todays corruption in high places and the madness which are the Afghan & Iraq wars - but the film runs out of interest it is simply too long! and confusing at times.
Things not as they first seem and jumps back and forth in time usually confuse this viewer - not so in this movie to any great extent. The film is beautifully shot and intriguing with African scenes and music, in contrast to the European scenes that are less interesting. The political message is delivered with a sledgehammer - which detracts from the movie somewhat.
A movie that is simple in effects, location and mood but presents a very humane message that really captures you. A movie that will keep you thinking and takes you out of your western world perspective. A must see movie by all!
There will be Blood was too long, boring. drama content was low and thriller content non existent. towards the end Daniel Day LEWIS was unintelligble
a wretching love story . confronting and an insite to the 3rd world issues and problems
Good movie, not an action packed strip but Ralph Fiennes is, as usual, a good pick!
good acting, good story. order it!
I actually found this movie quite frustrating - many paradoxes throughout - especially from Weisz's character. One minute she is a seductress and has Fiennes spellbound, and then she is almost arrogant in her disdain for him and her actions creating havoc. There wasn't even a lot of "Constant gardening" - I expected more
Excellent - a meaningful story beautifully told.
Excellent movie. Very relevant subject well exposed. Gave me some idea of the horrors of Africa
Superb acting by Fiennes contributes to making this movie exciting and emotional.A realistic plot involving dodgy pharmecutical companies and politicians , plus breathtaking Kenyan scenery had me spellbound. Le Carre rocks!!! (still)
While the idea behind it is fantastic, and the imagery of Africa fascinating I think this movie was far too long. Not only was it too long, but you really had to concentrate to keep up with the plot which made it tiresome and less engaging. I think this movie could have been much better.
Intrigueing story about love and corruption set against the backdrop of African misery
An excellent movie that brings out the fundamentals of any relationship in the world of money that we live in today.
Didn't grab me - maybe it was a bad choice for a Friday night. Predictable drug company conspiracy and I didn't watch it all. Husband persisted but was underwhelmed.
Surprisingly this is a great film. Well acted and believable. Ralph Fiennes gives a great performance as the clumsly shy and naive Englishman and the rest of the crew are also top class.
It is a pity that this film is not compulsory viewing as I am sure that the events portrayed regarding drug companies and how they test their products is still real and existing, not only with human beings but with animals (dogs, rats etc). Some human beings are really sick!
Thank heavens for the angels who sacrifice their lives trying to bring these crimes into the open.
I found this to be an incredible movie of self discovery of the main character and of his relationship with his wife. Worth watching.
A heartwrenching profoundly mesmerising film. Brilliantly acted and directed. If flawlessly moves from past to present and leaves you moved from start to finish.
A harrowing experience which left me with nightmares. Good acting. A truly grisly look into the big pharmaceutical companies and how Western governments are complicit in their profits and crimes.
Very deep, beautiful acting, a very easy to understand message is sent in this film. A most tasteful film that makes you think.
Fantastic movie, moving seamlessly between love story, political mystery and suspense thriller. Great cast and beautifully shot.
Frightening to think that life may actually be this way in some countries. Well acted, cleverly scripted, and provocative.
Only so-so, not what I expected.
Brilliant movie, first class acting, highly reccommended!
Not my sort of film. Too much political grandstanding and intrigue, and too many scenes shot from the shoulder which, far from giving it a feel of authenticity, tended to make it seem more like a poorly produced documentary.
An interesting but somewhat lifeless critique of the shady activities of drug companies in poor African countries. Most of the focus seems to be on those uncovering the truth rather than the victims.
Great movie..terrible ending..one for the girls not for us blokes tho..5/10 for me..my wife gave it a 9/10
Good movie. Needs to be watched on DVD, so you can wind back in places to follow 'who's who' etc. Nice scenery. Interesting storyline.
Just a good movie with fine actors
Well crafted story, very thought provoking and disturbing subject matter.
Leads were excellent and photography brilliant. Stayed with me for some time after watching.
Brave people who dare to ask difficult questions of those in authority often meet a sticky end. Tessa (Weisz) is a journalist with a big heart, and a fierce determination. When she meets Justin (Fiennes) early on in this film, we know she's got guts; but she's a loose cannon who needs to be reigned in. Fiennes character seems on the surface to be little more than an unambitious beuraucrat - an "apologist" for the powers that be - a gentle gardener. The relationship between these two has been poo-pooed by some reviewers and "unbelieveable", but THIS reviewer believes and knows that "opposites" attract. Their love story provides a solid foundation for the care and compassion only a cold, cynical audience would not truly believe - for sometimes, we need to have our own passion sparked and bouyed by that of another, and Tessa is not only believable, but you'd want to meet her (even if to smack her across the chops! in a good way - she's got nouse and guts). Carefully crafted and layered, this screenplay gets to the very bottom of all of us - we all have secrets - we all have an "agenda" and we can choose to deny that such exists, or celebrate those like Tessa who "get" that this is what makes the world a fascinating, absorbing, sometimes deadly place. This story held my fascination from beginning to very end; those who aren't fond of digging up the graves of the dead to explore why they were murdered won't like this film - but those who like a little mystery and intriguing depth? You'll love it. Haunting, it's themes stick with you for quite some time. I left writing this review for a month after watching the film. I then had to go out and buy it to watch it again. Do yourself a favour. Put in on your "Rent" list. It's a classic that'll make you think. Status Quo was a "rock" band, once. The Tessa's of the world rock it - in a dangerous but good way. They should not be silenced.
Gets a rap for being a chic flick, but there's enough grit in there to make it interesting enough that my boyfriend also loved it.
I loved it, this was a brilliant film.
this movie should have been great because of actors and story but in fact we found storyline was hard to follow and pace slow.
Great movie very intense and action packed.
A beautifully filmed and acted drama. A must see film.
First Class. A good expose of the lack of moralty in multi nationals added to an excellent feel for african conditions.
brilliant, thought provoking, excellent
Average - a standard "big business is bad" thriller with an over the top story line.
And the hand held camera - when will Hollywood get over this obsession. It works wonders to add excitement in critical times, but does the entire film have to be done this way? A scene in a restaurant doesn't need need it this treatment.
A particularly well done movie, all the more so given that the book on which it was based was extremely wordy and often stylistically dull. (Le Carr?? obviously is too major an author for the publisher to suggest an editor for his recent novels.) The photography is beautiful, and the principal character is very well portrayed. As usual with a Le Carr?? novel, the plot is extremely realistic -- so much so that the movie company (Universal Pictures) found it necessary to disclaim any support for the viewpoint Le Carr?? was expressing! But Le Carr?? was right, and U.P. wrong.
Compelling with a great story line. Would watch it again.
A remarkable and moving film. It really moved me and highly recommend it.
Not bad, familiar themes that have lost their impact a bit. Nothing really new or outstanding in the presentation of this movie.Worth watching though as the scenery is magnificent. Liked the music probably because Bridie chose it for her winning finale piece on "Dancing with the Stars" Nov 07
Interesting title but not what you might think going by the title. Good twist in movie with the female character. Overall a good movie to watch and work out the plot.
A moving and excellent film.
Brilliant. Acting excellent. Shots of poverty and filth around Kenya reinforce charitable donations. Great story & ending justified & not to be missed.
Special feature on making the movie should also be viewed.
An excellent movie that kept you guessing all the way through.
This was difficult to follow in the beginning, and I found that you had to concentrate on most of the movie in order to follow what was happening. But about 3/4 through you became enrapt in the storyline and had to see the end.
Initially I was not sure how I felt about the movie. It doesn't suck you in and connect with your emotions but it does make you stop and think.
Good story with reasonable acting but there were some gaps that needed to be filled in better and some bits that could easily have been edited out of the finished product.
Makes you realize that "greed" is nowadays called business.
Hard hitting, but well worth the effort to watch
Unexpected quality movie!
The film was well made, but the story lacked the dynamism of Le Carre's earlier texts. I appreciated the underlying concern about the exploitation of the world's poor in order to test and promote pharmaceutical products. I didn't look at any special features.
Seen this storyline elsewhere little boring in parts!
Very slow. Quite violent, with description of cruelty.
If you believe that the drug companies are working in an honourable and caring way for the relief of pain and suffering for the whole of humanity, then this movie is for you. If you believe that the drug companies are amongst the most corrupt profit oriented organisations on the face of the earth, then this movie is for you. This is edge of the seat stuff. You have to watch it when you are in the mood for a really challenging and emotional movie experience. The pills you pop may never look the same again.
A beautiful movie that is as sad as it is uplifting. Love and greed battle each other constantly.
really excellent political thrilller. a must watch
Beautiful movie and beautifully told!
I'm sure this idea would've sounded great on paper, though in reality, relatively predictable B-grade post-apocalyptic type encounter. Dissapointing.
A real eye-opener. A well told and powerful story.
I really enjoyed this movie an recommend to all
We found this movie to be very thought provoking and emotional, with some intense thrills and intrigue, and the ultimate sacrifice for the good of others.
Although it has some quite sad pieces to it, overall I think you would find this movie to be inspiring. We did.
Don't watch this movie if you expect straight out action... its not there. But if you enjoy seeing two people teach each other life lessons and the underdog battle against big business and corruption, then this is a movie for you.
Very intriguing movie..... wake up to needs of 3rd world people.
Great political/conspiracy movie. Fantastic acting.
This was an excellent drama, blending the love story and the political story really well. And who wouldn't want to watch Ralph Fiennes??
A little hard to get into right at the beginning but it is worth sticking it out. I thought about this for days after. It is not only a drama but a love story too. Loved it
too long and quite boring
Hired this due to it's Director Fernando Meinelles?, because he did such a brillant job with 'City of Gods'. Again great direction. Story deals with 2 people; 'opposites' in love, that exhibit courage & integrity. Intriguing African Drama involving abuse of the poor by Drug companies supported by the british high commission. I realise the story is fiction.......... but I agree with the comment made in the film that "drug companies are on a par with arms dealers! ." Thought provoking movie that stays with you, set in beautiful Kenya. Highly recommended.
an enthralling film, beautifully photograhed. The flashbacks are a little off putting intil you realise what is happening. We watched it on a very hot day and didn't notice the heat, we were so involved in the film.
A very watchable movie. I must say, brilliant. The story is very credible and well told. One cannot help be moved by the final scenes.
this was a verry exiting movie.
Waste of a good cast. Disjointed plot and hand held camera very distracting. Made me curious enough to read the book
Started off a bit slowly but gradually got me in it's grip & was quite a compelling, if depressing, movie. Not a great fan of stodgy Ralph Fiennes but I thought he was very good in this part.
A bit slow at first but well worth the watch.
Just couldn't get into it - perhaps i was expecting something else???
Fast paced, intelligent, a very good movie all round if you enjoy a thriller with a theme of private enterprise expolitation underpinned by the duplicity of the british government.
Although it was mostly an OK movie, it didn't capture my attention or draw me in. I didn't end up watching it all.
The story centres on the testing of a new drug for Aids patients in a remote area of Northern Kenya, by a large corporate pharmaceutical company who is also testing a new drug for TB without the knowledge or consent of the patients or approval of the watchdogs. The drug in itself is killing patients and when Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weiz) with the help of a local doctor begins their own investigation, they are both murdered. Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) an appointed British diplomat in Nairobi, distraught by his wife’s murder begins his own investigation and uncovers more then just the illegal pharmaceutical’s double agenda which leads to the uncovering of the inhuman treatment of the local Africans.
A story about what it is to love unconditionally and one’s acceptance to do the right thing even when it is not politically correct to do so at what ever the cost may be.
Absolutely engrossing movie.Wonderfully acted which engendered all sorts of emotions whilst viewing. One is left questioning the corruption of big companies.
Exciting, conspiracy movie. Lots of nice shots of ralph fiennes and the beautiful scenery of africa.
Brilliant! Totally compelling from beginning to end -- excellent plot, magnificent settings, social comment++, South African music is wonderful, and acting is quiet and understated. Superb cinema though rather sobering when you wonder how much is occurring in your own life!
Interesting subject matter but a bit slow to get going.
This is a great film. Great actors, great script, great directing. The story is constantly twisting, and is not easily predicatable (which is fantastic for a change). I would highly recommend this film to anyone.
A great performance by Ray Fiennes and Rachel Weiss. I was caught up in the intrigue and determined to discover if Rachel's character truly loved her husband, or she had played a part during her entire marriage. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Was thoroughly enjoyable. It had been one I'd put off watching due to comments from others but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Loved the scenery and the extras are also worth watching
I enjoyed ‘The Constant Gardner’ although, having previously read the book, I usually find that the film doesn’t then live up to my expectations. Not so here!
John LeCarre is a master of this type of story and anything written by him is hard to fault. The screenplay by Jeffrery Caine has been skilfully adapted and the original plot has been more or less faithfully followed. It is well acted, particularly by the principles although I’m not sure that the part of Tessa couldn’t have been better cast. Bill Nighy is a delight in his character and the ‘extras’ have been well schooled to produce the right atmosphere – not always the case when foreign countries are involved. It’s highly topical, as more and more corporate corruption is revealed around the world and with more than enough horrifying and thought-provoking detail.
Summing up, Constant Gardner is a good if not quite great LeCarre thriller, well acted in exotic locations and well worth watching.
Great love story, scenery and ethical dilemmas to think about.
Brilliant directing, look and feel of the images are great. Acting, top notch. Brings a new lease of life to a fairly dated story.
Another incredibly beautiful but sad and downright depressing movie... a swipe at the big drug companies and their non-existant ethics. Rachel Weisz is amazing... beautiful, intelligent portrayal of a well drawn character... though I couldn't believe her character being 24... more 34. Besides that trivial fact - a must see.
pretty disappointing. I suppose you have to teach yourself to never read a book before seeing the movie. But even allowing for that, there were terrible inconsistancies in the plot, some inane characterisation and OTT performances. I mean Bill Nighy...love ya, but could you underplay a role - just once?
I had to watch this movie twice..one, because I enjoyed it and found it very thought provoking. Two, because I found the film editing rather confusing first time round.
The big bad drug company or the big bad oil company, it's all been done before. If the main character had just gone to any news organization with her story at the start of the movie, I would have been saved hours of tedium.
Brilliant movie, so simple and yet so complex at the same time.
Very different showing both the beauty and misery of Africa and despite the efforts of 2 desperate people against the English bureaucracy and the greedy corporates, the suffering goes on.
Wonderfully told and acted. Moving celebration of love and sacrifice and commitment.
Best movie we've seen for a long time. Beautifully filmed and acted and made more enjoyable due to the fact that the storyline is so up to the minute.
I really enjoy a movie that changes your perceptions about things. I really felt like I was learning something about Africa, I also thought this movie made me feel more passioned about wanting to care about the world. This movie is a love story about an English man with political ties that go back through his family and while giving a lecture on U.N. politics and the English governent he meets his future wife. The're story is of love, passion, politics and with the beautiful colors and back drop of Africa it also has a beautiful soundtrack.
you will not need tissues to watch this film but when it is over you will be left deep breathing and maybe needing therapy....this is not a thriller no rush from watching this one just a global message at first I was let down but this film makes you ask questions and question your self that can't be a bad thing.
